Sadly Oldtimer, maps like this are new and not as old as ToH. Balanced maps have arisen out of the need for the game to be as fair as possible to all players. Maps were once more interesting I think, but they got played so many times that it didn't take long for someone to realize that starting the map playing as Red, gave you an advantage over Blue players.
So everybody wants to play red because playing red increases your chances of winning dramatically.
Balanced maps were the only way to counter people's complaints about the inequity of some of the maps available. And they've become very popular because the better player often wins because of skill and choice, not through imbalances in geography.
But ToH doesn't support only balanced mirror maps. ToH has a very wide range of maps available and Randoms are also very popular nowadays. Like it or not, everybody wants to start a game with a fair chance of winning. Can you beat Red on All For One map using Tan? Pretty hard against a skilled player, if not next to impossible (I said 'next' goddamnit!)
There is a reason for things being the way they are. I don't like maps like DW and HG and Memory maps. I play randoms and one or two CD maps that I like. Crimson Clover is still regarded as the most boring map to play, but I've never had a bad game on this (lol) mirror map. Another one of my favourites is Warlords. Which reminds me! Is anyone up for an 8 player IP game?

Oldtimer, you make your own ToH experience, Vesuvius doesn't make it for you. If you've got no time to play online games then why gripe about ToH maps? It's not like they're force fed to you or anything. Just calmly avoid the flood and choose different maps.
And Sha, if you've never been to Vietnam or never met a Vietnamese person, then how can you say that Saigon is a crap city and expect Ho Chi's to swallow it?

say something is crap if I haven't tried it...BUT I have maybe gathered enough knowledge from some subject and I can say that if you visit any other place than this board in net you can see how much information there is whenever you go. Can you trust it? Yes, if you ask person you know if he knows is some information trustable.
So if I would have 24 hours to decide whether Saigon is crap city or not...I wouldn't go there with jet. I would gather information from the net and some friends I know. I think I could then manage say my opinion about it. But still it doesn't mean that Ho Chi think it is crap city. And of course my opinion could change when I visit that place.
It's everyone to decide whether my opinion counts to someone or not. I can't do damn thing about it anyway. Thing is that people don't trash their own backyard. If I go flame someone from dirty backyard...I get kicked. Still the backyard can be trashy even if I don't live in that house. Of course if I only hear rumours about the backyard and I haven't got any information person I trust...It's possible backyard has no trashes at all.
One of the things is also strange that when one says that TOH maps are boring and I wouldn't like to play them...one says that Vesuvius doesn't do your TOH experience...
Hmm...If I would be searching "good maps for hotseat" I maybe would check TOH maps out. But answer is that I haven't find them really enjoyable. Sorry.
(I had bunch of hotseat maps in my backpocket not long ago, Oldtimer. You should have asked then that question. My friend has done some pretty good maps for hotseat games only and maybe he has them still. He lives in other town but I email and ask if he knows something about the issue.)

I had a shot at you for disrespecting ToH maps, but as you say, you dont have the time to spend 4+ hours to play an online game. Exactly. Do you think everyone else does too? Thats why there arent XL ToH maps, people dont want to be hung up on the net for hours on end playing a map, where in the end fight you have 50 black dragons and 200 scorpicores. So in effect oldtimer, you answered the whole thing yourself. ToH maps are small and loaded, because people want to get the things over and done with.
Funnily enough, my favourite type of map is random, for reasons axplained better than me be Shae as usual. I love 15 hour games, but do I want to be on the pc for that long without a break? There is a small core of ToH players who like that sort of stuff, I had a game with a player called Phantom1500, who is better at this game than anyone has a right to be. We played from 9am until 11pm, and it was an epic game. But I cant do that everyday, as much as I would love to. So short sharp, get it over and done with maps are the answer. Thats simply the way it works.

The breakdown:
3 about HOMM3
2 about HOMM4
1 about ToH
4 about nothing HOMM-related.
So saying that 6 threads are off-topic was a misrepresentation on my part. I apologize. I would edit the original post, but it would make your criticism of me seem out of place.

The thing i find funny about this whole thing is that quite a few weeks ago there was a thread about what people were going to call there babies and alot of other silly stuff like it.
Now this thread i think got seriously edited or removed for being total pointless, yet now we seem to have one that goes on for 13 pages (naked girls read this thread) and earns itself an interesting label. To me there both nearly the exactly the same sort of thread.

I personnally think that this is more then just a place to chat about the game, we're better then those people who talk about something 24seven, ive got a friend who is obsessed with sta trek and even speaks klingon, its pathetic! No, we arent like that, we come here and talk aboout our lives, our feelings, not just about how to find the grail. No HC isnt degenerating, its turning into a place filled with unknown people wh juust want info on a game into a place of friendship. And im not even sure what im ranting on about so ill tell a story, the year was 19 tickety 5, we had to say tiickety because the Kaiser stole the number 2. Anyywho i was eatin a can of peaches when i got the news of the vietnam war, course i was in Texas at the time and Vietnam is in Minneasota. So i took my can o peaches and ran to the nearest voting booth to vote for proposition 24, and that was the day i invented the square wheel, then damned michelin man came in from a blimp annd stole my prototype.

You actually had a different view when you counted. The "Word Association Game IV" Thread was in the top 10 when you started the thread. It's now removed, and the "new" number 10 ("Crusader or Archangel") is HOMM related. (Actually, "Crusader or Archangel" is right now on place 9 having passed the "Which Creature shouldn't be in heroes ...." Thread.)

I think naked girls thread was very selfironic thread which that baby thread wasn't. That is the difference. People knew in naked girls thread they were talking offtopic issues and kinda joked about whole thing.
About OFFTOPIC...
WAG is a game and I think there is no point going to mock some little word game. I myself find it very relaxing and funny. I don't really use lot of time in that so it isn't really off from other subjects.
If I would really tried to be intelligent and wise I would probably post only couple of messages now and then. They would be long and possible very boring.
Instead I have chosen to be little bit bigger mouth than I am in reality but at least we are talking all along and not keeping our mouth shut and trying to be "too intelligent".
Let's keep talking at least it keeps us warm until the game lights up our hearts for more important issues.
Of course there is the saying that wise man spokes only few words but in community that is based into communicating through internet there must be "smalltalk" keep things alive.
I would hate if all things would be about HoMM and we couldn't talk about other interests we might have.
Just my humble opinion.

I will explain this once.
I usually don't explain jokes, but you guys just don't seem to get it.
Sha and I were discussing why we could not get people to post ideas and debate on what we thought were interesting threads in the alter and library. I even created some threads to help promote the strategy and creature evaluations. There was not the responce that I had hoped for...So
I decided to see what kind of thread it takes to generate a responce, hence "Please do not open this thread. No Naked girls here..." it got alot of responce but it was a joke, have any of you critics ever heard of a joke? But it also was a comment on what people wanted in the tavern...a little light fun!
"Naked Girls Only" was created in responce to something Sha said to me about "No Naked girls" and if you read the first post all I said was "How YOU Doin?"...I expected the thread to get a few hits then go away...But
People want some light hearted, risque humor, and started posting there. So sue us! We can have fun in any way we see fit. People in the HC actually enjoy each other. Quick lets stop that and go back to bickering!

There was no need to explain the joke i got it the first time around as well as the second. Im not saying they should not be fun/funny threads just wanted to know how ones done earlier that wandered of the path were deeply criticised and removed/edited while now it has the opposite effect.

In the past 3 wekks, things have gotten worse. More off-topic threads. The top page of the Tavern has almost nothing on HOMM. The Altar has very little except for a few snowes about things of no importance. The Library is, well, ... not as active as in eaarlier days, but still decent. There seem to be a lot more posters who don't seem to say anyithng at all about the game. I'm reminded of why I left.

excuuse me Coldfyrius...
..but isn't the tavern suppossed to be off topic anyway? ...I think we've been through this already interest aboud HoMM, in general, and HoMM4, in particular, isn't gone... people just know too much already and don't want to learn more in fear of spoiling the game... when HoMM4 comes out, heroes-related threads will be revived or created once again...
...leaving HC was your choice, but if you really cared you should stay here and do something about it ...not rant and run ...if we don't try to correct some known problems of HC, noone will ...I don't suppose you think that this is a job for Val and the Mods only? ...we must help if we see something bad ...at least try to ...fleeing away is the easy way ...what I'm trying to say is that, if you don't want to do something about the problems in HC, don't ...but stop ranting about it...

I think that the point of the discussion is no longer about the topics in the tavern, but the actual subject matter within. Coldfyrius, however clever you are, it takes a much stronger person than you to actually come up with methods to solve these problems that you are so quick to point out. And as for the Altar being about threads that snow, then it seems to me that you fit right in with that five letter little word.
You WHINGE too, but instead of constructive MOANING, you're quite happy to leave the solution to others and run away. You're not a community member it seems, you're just a self-titled bandit.
I tell you what. You want to leave these sort of hiccups to us real Community members to fix, then that's fine. But once it DOES get fixed (and believe me, I always see lights at the end of the tunnels), and you pop back here, in an atmosphere that's more to your catered liking and start posting again, then I'm going to run all over you like a slick tyre and leave rubber burns all over your face that you'll look like the Michelin man. Pity that, because at the moment you're so full of hot air and no wings that you more resemble the Goodyear Blimp. You'll be so unrecognizable that you'll wish you never came back. I will make sure that you get booted so far out of this place that even Incubus will look innocent in comparison!
