HC Chess Masters
Yes! I thought we might play chess
The idea is that you can join in and when we have enough players, we'll make a sort of tournament. I decide who plays who and the winners will move on to the next round. The winner will be declared HC Chess Master. I don't know about the prizes yet, but I was thinking maybe a QP for the winner might be a motivation...But yeah, need to ask Pandora or Shadowcaster about that.
The actual playing, I thought, could be done in this thread, or its own thread, whatever way you like it. You simply post your move and wait for your opponent's move. It will, of course, take a lot of time, especially since some members only show up every now and then, but I think none of us would actually have joined HC if we didn't have time. So you take a chessboard out at home and move the pieces the way your opponent tells you. Naturally you'll be moving your own pieces too.
Now, some notes:
*You announce your moves in this format: (For example) H5 to H6. I think all chessboards have the numbers/letters marked on them, but if yours doesn't, please tell us and we'll show you how they go.
*You'll all be aware or the rules, I take it.
*Should your opponenet make a move that is not allowed or should he somehow break the rules, notify him/her before posting another move. That way the game can be kept fair.

That's it, I guess. Now, start joining! I'll notify you when I find out wether it's possible to arrange a QP for the winner or not.

Interesting idea, haven't played chess in ages. Games would be better played on online chess program rather than here. Don't know any good chess sites but even MSN has Chess Club option what i haven't never tried but should be easy..
That other Chess thread seems "little" dead so it's not bad to start new chess tournament.

Sorry, Pan, I was mistaken! I can post again, so you don't need to tell them what I told you to tell them after all
Geny -- I knew about that thread, but it is long dead and I thought it would be a good idea to start over again. And besides, it was not so much a tournament as general discussion on chess. This time it's a competition all along
Homer -- I thought of that, but then I figured it would be a nice idea to do it this way. Another thing why it's better to do it this way is that it would be a real drag to have to arrange a time for every single game, especially since some players might be busy and, more importantly, on different time zones, so it might be quite hard for both players to be online at the same time. Make sense?
Btw, will you, Geny and Homer, be joining?
Let's just wait for Pandora to post her answer on the question about whether or not it's possible to promise a QP to the winner. If the answer is positive, we should get loads of contestants!

I was joking about the previous thread, I know it's dead.
And sure, I'll join. I enjoy the game, but I don't get too much opportunities to play versus humans.
However, I don't like the idea that you'll choose who plays with whom. If you want to organize a tournament (small however it may be) do it right, make a table of contestants and all that.
And the last thing - who cares about QPs, let's just play already.

Good points Geny. What do you suggest, we pull names out of a hat?
Joining is open until the end of 2th of July. I know it's a long time, but I'll be in Italy between 28.6 and 1.7.
So, start joining!
Oh and no worries about not being a good player...I'm no good myself, I just enjoy playing

I'd like to play. Maybe this will actually work out. People will lose interest quickly though from my past experiences with Chess tournaments.

That way works too. But in order for it to work there should be 2^x players (4, 8, 16 etc.). In any other case the best way will probably be to let every player play against each one of the others. Unless someone has a better idea.

That's right, Geny... But if we have, say 15 players, it would take too many games...Maybe groups of three or so, and there everone plays everyone, and then the winner moves on?

I agree. Now, two questions remain.
1) To play in this thread or to make a new thread for playing?
2) Many people will be somewhere for summer holidays and unable to join/play. Should the tournament be delayed?

1)I think a new thread will be better and this one will only keep score and such.
2)Well, I'll be away most of August (12th to 31st), but I want to play now. I for one am willing to lose by default during that season, but I don't know what the others will say.

I'll be away from 10.7 to end of august, but I guess I dad'll bring the laptop with him, so I'll be able to log on every now and then. And besides, I can use the internet in the librairy. So yeah, I'll see about that. Now, joining ends at 00.00 , between 3th and 4th of July (GMT). Then we'll see about how to play. Agreed?

With regards to the QP - I'll see how the thread progresses, if there is any more interesting chess discussion, or helpful play by play as it goes on, then I may consider the winner for a QP.
To be perfectly honest though, I am quite against the giving of QP's for awards in these types of games now - as IMO, they don't really add to the community for everyone, they only affect a select few. So you guys will have to see what you can make of this thread and then I will let you know.

I have tournament software that will be able to make brackets randomly. We have the option of double elimation, single elimination and round robin. We can also make pools to seed a single elimination or double elimination tournament.
I'd be glad to create a bracket and take a screen shot of the bracket and then post it.
Don't worry about not having exactly the right number of people. If we start with round robin or do double elimination instead of singles, then it will all be fair in the end.
