All about being or NOT being "PC"
I absolutely loathe the people on the PC soapbox.
God forbid anyone says anything that has even the remote possibility of offending anyone else.
It wasnt always like this, this constant checking and rechecking of what you say or write to see whether or not you MIGHT offend someone.
Where is this coming from?
Well.
I am on a forum (Not HC) and the other day I said the word "retarded", not as in to stunt or stop something, but in reference to people being less than (NEGATIVELY intelligent at that) intelligent.
The thread started with a post from someone that had this to say:

u {insert "N" word here} need to go somewhere and **** a gay **** of a transexual *****.
That same person goes on to say:

Quite a few posts were made before I posted this:
"I am telling you my theory is most people born between 1980-2000 are somehow retarded. I keep saying it and people don't believe me.
I know people that fall into my theory dates...and they ARE not right in the head. Check the birth dates of the people giving problems on LA...I bet you a good majority of them are in those years. LOL"
A 36 year old from North Jersey, in what I refer to as one of the "smart ages" (she was born around 1970) quietly ripped me a new one for saying "retarded". Needless to say I was like WTFF girlie.
She chimed in with her 2 cents to MY post:

Personally I thought her addition could have used a little work...
Teens today are spoiled and have access to more information then we did growing up. Between cell phones, the internet, downloading music, video games, etc...they dont have to work as hard to get the info they need. When we were growing up we had to *gasp* go to the library, check out books and do actual research.
Todays technology has made kids lazy and disrespectful. They want everything NOW. As parents, we need to teach respect and courtesy and hopefully down the road, when our children are 16 they will be well educated and appreciate the technology available to them and not abuse it.
Miss Offended goes on to say in a personal message to me:
" my ears always perk up and I get offended when others use terms that offend others. I guess thats the mom in me. There are many words that are off limits to be spoken in my home. Am I 100 percent Polically Correct? No, I just try to set a good example for my kids."
The choice of my wording is offensive? That word isnt used to describe people nowadays?

So what might I ask IS used to describe these people that their combined brain cell count is in the negatives?

That she runs around getting all offended when people say anything just sent me into fits of laughter, I somehow had this visual of this woman running circles around people telling them off for saying the word "retarded".
She guesses that's the MOM in her?
Oh PLEASE.
The days of "Donna Reed" and "oh GOSH" are long gone folks.
Sorry, it was a sad loss really.
But lets get real here.
She can limit the words spoken in her house, but boy isn't it going to be a slap to her rosy cheeks when her twins come home and they are repeating worse things.
It's great she tries to set an example for her kids, and I applaud that.
As parents we can't do enough to put our kids on the right foot.
BUT.
Now come on. WHEN did people get so overly sensitive and uber PC?
I am not in any way saying that it isnt okay to BE Politically CORRECT, but I think in the long run you pave the way for people to rip your head off and vomit down your throat when the wordings change yet AGAIN and YOUR way of saying this or that is now offensive.
Case and point. I have a ton of examples I COULD use, but this one I will list drives the point home.

I worked in Chicago alongside many "African Americans" Women to be exact. And let me tell you they have NO QUALMS whatsoever telling you how messed up you are if you even think about saying that.
A long time ago they were referred to as "colored folk" and then, "Negroes", and THEN "Blacks" and finally "African Americans" and the more widely known and frowned on "snows" or as many would be thugs call themselves "Niggas".
First off, let me say VERY CLEARLY I do NOT like the "N" word in ANY variance.
I find it personally offensive, but I wont lift a finger to stop ANY person I know, black OR white (pink, purple, red, polka dotted or otherwise colored) from using it.
Freedom of speech after all....right?
I dont honestly believe that any self-respecting human being would use that word for anything other than pointing it out as the nasty depreciating word it really is.

But do I have that right to tell you that YOU cant say it, type it, write it or use it?
No.
As the world changes so does its speech. What also changes is the PC and non-PC speech.
Personally, I say what is on my mind and if I offend you oh well.
YOU know what? Walk it off. Suck it up. Go cry to someone else about how mean I am or how non-PC I am.
People that know me well enough, know that I clean up my language for very few.
I dont sugar coat or make any attempts to lie to you.
I speak the truth as I see it.
And for the record I could care less what color you are, what your gender is, or where you hail from.
If you are decent and respectful to me, I will do the same for you.
But no matter WHO you are I will NOT sugar coat anything.
Period.
I know quite a few exceptions to my age theory and I say that too. I slop the compliments on THICK when I encounter someone in that age group that is respectful, trustworthy, competent, intelligent and hard working among other things.
Ahhh the joys of opinions. LOL
What cracks me up even worse about all of this, is that some people I know would have hung all of those posters out to dry with much worse words than "retarded".
I shudder to think how tightly their little panties would have bound up had some people in my circle of friends caught a hold of them.

Short = vertically challenged
White= Caucasian
Retarded = Mentally challenged
Housewife = Domestic Engineer
Gay = Homosexual
Gay couples = Life partners
Garbage man = Sanitation Engineer
And that is a short list.
You could literally make yourself crazy trying to keep up to date and what you can and can not (or should not) say anymore these days and that is why I just choose to speak my mind with very little regard to whether or not I will make any given person angry.
It can get ridiculous to be PC all of the time.

Well IMO the best way to deal with these .. people... is to tell the "since it is no longer politically correct, and both you and I know we aren't referring to birth defect X, from cause Y, then my message should be quite clear, and hard to mistake"

Sounds more like an imature punk who dont even know the real definition of some of the words he throws out.
Some people on the net do tend to shout out negativity to people when they feel strongly about it.
Sometimes they may have that same case & reflect on it by calling other people the N word or gay etc.

BTW, I think that "European-American" is a better term for whites than "Caucasian" is. "Caucasian" was made up by people who don't know where the Caucass mountains are, and what people that come from there look like. (Hint: Not like most whites.)

Well, Caucasia does includes some land around the Caucasus Mountains... and I'm not sure they look significantly different from other people in terms of skin colour.

I am completely with you on that one.
The day that I logged on and saw that, also saw 2 seconds after that that indeed the moderators of that forum had banned him and rightfully so.
Not because his spelling was dreadful (WTH is a “Library”?), LOL, but because this guy had been on and off the site for months, and caused problems and left posts like that more often than not.

Hahaha, even you are hesitant to call them people. LOL I found them incredibly hard to deal with or have a level headed discussion with on any level. The only way I could get a point across to them was if I dumbed it down so badly it made MY head hurt.
Even had I thought to say that, I assure you…it would have been met with confusion. LOL

But for the record, a LOT of people are gung-ho on the PC bandwagon and the question which prompted me to write this is the first place was a question of whether or not it helped anything to be “PC”…which I don’t personally believe it helps anything, if anything I think it makes some things MORE difficult and even confusing.

Retarded was at some point in time an acceptable word to use when referring to people that had low intelligence. There is actually a scale showing the various degrees of lower intelligence in which not only is “retarded” used, but “moron” as well. I would say it was used up until the late 50’s maybe even the early 60’s. I will try and track the scale down, for intent and purpose…it IS interesting.
BUT ME using the word “retarded” was more like a “knee-jerk” reaction on my end…If I remember correctly it was more like me commenting on the stupidity of it all rather than anything else.
Personally “honky” makes me laugh hysterically. Seriously now, if you want to call a person something not-so-nice….couldn’t they come up with something other than THAT?

Parents aren’t really allowed to be parents anymore.
Sadly I see this trend of “parents” becoming younger and younger, the kids having kids…largely unsupervised by THEIR parents.
I don’t think it is so much that the parents are spoiling the kids these days, more like the kids walk all over their parents to get what they want, because if a parent (at least here) so much as looks at their kids cross eyed, you get Child Protection breathing on you.
True story, a friend’s stepson was unruly and causing trouble at school.
The step father disciplined the child and the very next day the stepson went to school claiming that his stepfather abused him.
They removed the stepson from the home, basically rewarded him for not only lying, gave him somewhat of a mini-vacation away from his house (the foster parents took him shopping and all kinds of attention) and put the parents on trial for supposed abuse when all they were trying to do was discipline the kid.
THAT kind of thing happens more often than not.

The Black Eyed Peas' song "Let's get Retarded" was changed to "Let's get it Started" so that Radios had a version they "could" play.
Saturday Night live had a sketch featuring 4 guys singing along with a song called "Danny's Song", and sharing the memories that the tune brought back with each other over beers. One of the guys told a story about a day he spent withhis dad, and he recalled thinking that day - ""I have a dad" and not, "I have a dad with Down's Syndrome". " as part of his story - the episode aired live - but in all the reruns they bleeped out the words down syndrome.
