Metallica - Nothing else matters
Iron Maiden - Hallowed be thy name
Judas Priest - Revolution

I always failed to see the clear difference between "old school" metal and hard rock... It mostly lies in what the bend itself says they play I guess.

Metallica have made some classic songs - Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, The Unforgiven - but that's hardly metal ...

I also think that November Rain with Guns'n'Roses is a classic track, but again, hardly metal.

Completely agree about Black Sabbath. I just can't decide which of their songs I like best ("Iron man", "Black sabbath", "War pigs", or "Master of insanity"... they all seem simply perfect...)

@serpent, no, Guns&Roses definitely aren't metal...

Did you know that the term "heavy metal" was first used by some guy describing "Led Zeppelin"?

Yeah, I heard about it.
Though they are more like the fathers of heavy metal, and not metal themselves.

Well.. There's much to say about Metallica. But I keep it short.

Best song: To Live is to Die
Best album: ...And Justice for All and Master of Puppets

And that's it. Those two album are the best albums ever made by any band/guy/human. They're simply amazing.

The way to look at it is chronologicaly. Hard rock comes before heavy metal. So basically, you have the 70's with bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, that are hard rock. And then, from the late 70's up to the 80's, you have heavy metal: Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc.

Now referring to the name, it has to be said that initially there was no difference if you called a band hard rock or heavy metal. They meant the same music genre. But with time, hard rock kept it's "classic" sound, while heavy metal became increasingly, well...heavy. I mean the riffs got more aggressive, the guitars got more distorsion on them, the drumms and base lines got simpler but faster. Hard rock, on the other hand, kept a more musically complex structure, but remained more "mellow".

Regarding Guns N' Roses, they are one of the bands that is really hard to classify. I guess the best way to put it is exactly like that: hard rock and heavy metal, all with that 80's feel to it.

Queen, on the other hand, are impossible to classify. This is partly due to the fact that they have no two songs alike (which is why they are one of the greatest, dare I say it, the greatest band, ever).

Since we're on the topic, let it be pointed out that since "rock" is the generic term which encompasses both hard rock, all kinds of metal, and some other genres, the term which best describes musical styles in the field is "metal". Thus, we have heavy metal, southern metal, progressive metal, speed metal, thrash metal, black metal, death metal, gothic metal, and a hole other variety. There are few bands that fit in precisely one category, while the metal types themselves are often hard to distinguish. For example, both speed and trash metal are a fast, loud genre, with a simple line to them and fast paced rythm. So, a band such as Motorhead, could be claimed to play both speed and trash metal, tough conaisseurs will often argue about this.

Sorry for the spelling mistakes.

Keep on rocking.
