Is it really getting a trend? A Chinese couple tried to name baby "@" claiming the character used in e-mail addresses echoed their love for the child, an official trying to whip the national language into line.
"The whole world uses it to write e-mail, and translated into Chinese it means 'love him'"the father explained.
The deputy chief of the State Language Commission told a news conference on the state of the language that the name was an extreme example of people's increasingly adventurous approach to Chinese, as commercialization and the Internet break down conventions.

Chinese are already numerous, imagine if a small percentage of them decides to use such names. It's only a matter of time before we see something like Pwn or Omg...

My own name isn't anything special but I have known some weirdly named people.

Two of my school buddies had names with humour:

Miina Kenttä which in English would be Mine Field.
Dennis Kenttä which in English would be Dennis Field.

There was also one school assistant from lower grade. Anu Saukko which would be Anu Otter in English but when you move s to the first name like this Anus Aukko it would be Anus Hole. She must have had very evil parents.

From what I've read there are also few Tuhkimos (Cinderellas) in Finland and one of them is a man.

I have heard many ridiculous names here as well.

In army one of my room mate name was H. Ellä and if you read first letter and then last name it means 'Soft' in English. Now how cool is that for MP?

This i found in phone book: Heli Kopteri. Well you can already guess it it's Helicopter. Good work parents

Well Better than being called Screwdriver, Mo Tor and Handel like the children of an native african tribe leader (when a guy stoped somewhere in africa and they found him they found his tools so facinating that the chief gave his children these names...). There is a girl named Lufthansa, a boy named Galadriel (lol parents must be LOTR fanatics) i wish i could find the magazine again where there was a report on the most  wacky names in history...

Edit: It's funny but after all this time I saw this article My name made me do it!

It deals with the unconscious effect the name has on our actions so the thread popped to mind instantly

A few quick references:

*Students whose names begin with C or D get lower grades than those whose names begin with A or B;

*major league baseball players whose first or last names began with K (the strikeout-signifying letter) are significantly more likely to strike out, according to the report published in the December issue of Psychological Science.
Err ok that seems weird

*"The conscious process is baseball players want to get a hit and students want to get A's," Nelson says. "So if you get a change in performance consistent with the name-letter effect, it clearly shows there must be some unconscious desire operating in the other direction."

*...people are disproportionately likely to live in states or cities resembling their names, have careers that resemble their names and even marry those whose surnames begin with the same letter as their own.
"If this is an unconscious preference, it suggests we don't really have free will about certain important decisions,"

*The researchers say the effect is definitely more than coincidence but is small nevertheless.

One of my (many) brothers was going to name their poor kids Montana Dakota and Dakota Montana.  Regardless of the sex of the child.  Sort of make me glad he got snipped.  I have met a few interestingly named people.  Eima and Eura, twin girls, who's last name happened to be Pig.  (The e is silent in the names...so figure it out).  Who would do that to their kids?  Who would keep the last name Pig anyhow???

I know I can always get to the brother that is a roomate by calling him his middle name.  He absolutely hates it.  Even though it is not odd or unusual.  He usually goes by his first name or JD.  Lol he even once thought about changing his middle name to Daniels so he could be Jack Daniels.  Names are odd things.  Some like their names, some hate them.  Some legally change them.

The Pig example was great What an irony, one would think you parents want the best for you - not use you to have their fun..
