Lord of the Rings mod project (campaign)

With ToE coming out, and the addition of 50% extra units + orcs, I'd say there's enough to choose from to recreate The Lord of the Rings.

Basicly what I'm curious about, is how many people would be interested in creating this, and how many people would be interested in PLAYING this? I mean not be all that interesting and realistic, given the heroes would take the spot of a whole stack, and an army can only hold 7 stacks. That's also what I'd like to know, how many think this would work?

I've given it some thought, beneath here is a list of most probable models to use for the characters. Please ignore current statistics and abilities, growth and cost, that's all modable.

I would favour using the unupgraded models for the heroes, since unupgraded stacks on the battlefield may contain a stack that's upgraded. If the upgraded version happens to be say, 12 Legolasses, that could be a serious problem. Thus, it would be better to use unupgraded models, and use only upgraded versions on the adventure map. Weeks of the "insert hero model" would need to be removed though, this should be possible.

That aside, the hero models should cost around 500 milion gold and 1000 of each recourse, to ensure they are never purchased in towns (if at all made available), the upgrades being normal costs and affordable by the AI.


Potential maplist for the first campaign (The fellowship of the ring):

Mission 1 - Frodo has obtained the ring, and on advise of Gandalf, must reach Bree while avoiding being caught (and killed) by Ringwraiths. A maze through the forest, preferably one that is cloaked in the Fog of War each turn again.

Mission 2 - Meeting Aragorn in Bree, the group must find their way to Rivendell, chased by Ringwraiths. A confrontation with the Wraiths should end without casualties. With Frodo wounded, a time limit is set. The mission ends once the river has been crossed. (perhaps a final confrontation with the wraiths, defeated with the aid of Rivendell elves)

Mission 3 - The fellowship is formed, which now must reach Lothlorien. After failing to pass the mountain, they must head through the mines of Moria, a wicked maze, where many goblins and some orcs await them. A trigger should set the chase by a massive army of goblins and the like, forcing the fellowship to run, and a confrontation with the Balrog should end without casualties, after which Gandalf is ripped from the group.

Mission 4 - Leaving Lothlorien, the group must head down the river, while being hunted by Uruk Hai. Facing inevitable death, a certain number of Uruk Hai must be killed (by Boromir) before the mission ends, and Boromir is ripped from the group.


All optionable of course

I'd like to hear thoughts on the potential success of a project like this.

This sounds interesting.  I can probably help make graphics and texts, but not with mapmaking.

I think Duncan would be a better Aragorn than the Vindicator.  Oh and are you aware that it's possible to add totally new creature IDs into the game?  No need to worry about upgrades and such.  It requires some heavy modding but so would this project anyway.

This sounds interesting, but as Ceph said full new Creatures would be better that would avoid lots and lots of problems and instead of making a Hero model cost 500.00.00 Gold you just don't add them to Towns. If you don't know how to do this (What I expect because no Modder but me has done this) read my guide at the Mod Wiki I got a QP for it so it must be good

@Lord_Evil: You should give your ideas to Moonlith and the two of you should work together.

@ Lord Evil:  I never claimed dibs on this! xD Heck, I was merely suggesting and hoping someone else could take on the lead of a project like this, since I suck at organising and the like. Screaming ideas and hoping someone else uses them, THAT'S what I'm good at.

@ Ceph / Kronos: Thanks  I have a difficulty with deciding wether to use heroes or 1-unit stacks as the main heroes of the stories, since its troublesome to send off 9 heroes after each other in the same direction, plus they shouldn't have an army with them.

I personally think the hero leading them would be the "narrator" Or "the good force" adding boosts to the hero units. All hero units should have oversized HP / Defense stats (highly durable) and tier7+ damage ratings.

Legolas: No Range penalty, double shot, Scatter Shot, Force Arrow

Boromir: No Enemy Retaliation, Cleave, Shield Allies
Aragorn: No Enemy Retaliation, Double Attack

Gimli: Attacks All Adjecent enemies, Double Attack, stronger single attack than Aragorn / Boromir.

Gandalf: Regeneration, Caster (Holy Word (Since Gandalf should be the only one decently capable of taking on the Balrog! Holy word could be modded to do snowloads of damage.), Righteous Might, Arcane Armor). Gandalf is NOT a shooter - he never shoots in the story either.

Hobbits: ...... Shouldn't they just stand around and avoid damage? They could throw rocks but, little damage.

As it is I still want to get better at Modding and the like, but it's hard to figure everything out I know the modding wiki offers some info but usually it's not THAT very clear, since with many things on it I am left with unanswered questions. I should write them down and toss them here some time...

Problem still: Heroes or units for the fellowship? What should be the hero? Clearly not Gandalf or Boromir in any case, since they'd get stripped from the group at some point. Also the group splits multiple times.

If anyone is experienced with cutscenes and cinematics, we could even add cutscenes from the movie to the campaign maps At the beginning, end, and when reaching certain areas in each map.

Another problem still: Warg Riders? Oliphants? Shelob? What to use for these?

Also, should the Pit Lord, Arch Devil or Spectral Dragon be used for the Balrog? Or wait untill we know better how to alter models, and add the spectral dragon's shadowy gas to the Arch Devil or Pit Lord?

First of all, I like the idea of modifying Heroes 5 into Lotr, it would certainly open up several possiblities for Singel scenarios and Campaigns;.. but I fail to see how peasants translate into hobbits lol!

Salamandre translated Lava Sharpshooters into Hoplites and Behemoths into elephants beeing one of the best WoG mapmakers at the same time, so it's not a question
Not to mention we already have weirds like Medusa made of Fire Elemental and Blood Sister and people do like it.
