I actually visited Romania with my parents once, back in 1992. I don't remember much of it -- being a stupid 7-year old doesn't do miracles for one's memory -- but what I do remember was that it was quite beautiful, landscape-wise, but also that a lot of the infrastructure was somewhat dilapidated. Understandably enough, when 80 % of your national budget in the 80s was spent on draining pipes in Ceaucescu's (sorry for misspelling that; it's not a name I write very often) palace.

I also remember that it was something of a boring country for a child living in a hotel, as we weren't allowed to play on the lawns.

I think I'll limit myself to this, as my second-hand knowledge of Romania is a little bit too vast to be summed up here, at least right now. Three concluding comments, though:

First, I've often heard that you don't treat your Gypsies too well, but this seems to be the norm in most of Eastern Europe, so... :\

Second, I've had at least two net-friends from Romania, all of which I met either here or on Guardians' Grove: Danos and BoogieMan.

Third, when I first started liking the English football team Chelsea, they were a relatively mediocre team, whose right back and one of my favourite players was the Romanian Dan Petrescu. Which BoogieMan once told me meant something like "Peterson".

Romania

hmm

Vlad The Impaler!

Yeah, that's the first thing that crosses my mind.

As for Romanians.. Poles don't like Romanians in general, beats me why. A conviction that Romanians = Thieves/Slovens still lingers here. Same with Poles in Germany or so.. Every guy from a poorer country is identified with thief. Or a drunk. Everywhere

And we aren't very welcome in most of Hungary, but it's not like we treat them (I mean, "generalizing" of course) any better

I'm so tired of stereotypes. And yeah Doom, most of such people from poorer countries are identified as thieves because they WANT an excuse for that. A minor theft by a romanian gets in the first page on the news in Italy, while a bank robbery hardly gets any attention if there are too many small romanian thefts happening which have 'priority'.

And yeah well we don't treat gypsies well, it's not like they make a good impression (MOST of them who "are" there on the streets are thieves/backstabbers, seriously) and I heard hungarians have the most problem with them though, so it's not like only happening with romanians. I guess it's a thing but I'm not saying only the gypsies are responsible -- it's just that some of the gypsies have created this "stereotype" for all of their kind and people it's like they think all of them steal and are thieves and all that.

Well, every nation has a label around the world

Poles = Car thieves
Romanians = Pickpockets
Russians = Alcoholics
Americans = Idiots

And so on

We all love stereotypes, don't we. ~~

Hmm, interesting. I think it's a good idea. I might start sg. similar with Hungary some day (or not...)

So as I live in a neighbour country I should know things about Romania. Though I do not. I know that, of course Transylvania belonged to the Hungarian Kingdom (later the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy) and so "we" lost it. In fact, most I know about that matter is that so many people were/are/will be mad because of this. I personally think that it's not the biggest matter...

I heard that Romania is in a less good social-economyc state than us Hungary, but I can hardly believe it is even possible And I also heard that Romania is working hard to "get better". Good luck(And I do think you will leave Hungary behind if we don't change)
Oh, and yes, you too joined EU.

A shame but I think that mos I 'know' is from stereotipes. I know for sure that several people in my humble country tends to hate Romania out of fashion (as it is a trend at HC to hate Namus or blame mamga). I also heard that Romanians share the feeling towards Hungarians. But I heard from people who were actually in Romania that Romanian people are kind and not that rejective at all. Anyways there were some nasty affair with Whatshisname Chauchescu? I was terrible from history... So back in communism Seklers weren't really loved.

And there are many jokes with a Romanian, a Hungarian and some random other nationality, around here

What else...? Oh... It is not the fault of Romanian everyday people, but cyanide and metal pollution came from that region and it had it's effect on river Tisza

Not much else for now

So well, it is true. One thing: you are supposed to "steal" the work from Hungarians Don't know how much truth it bears...

Yes, in Hungary, it is a huge social problem as well. Oh it is just an other shameful stereotype, but some consider every Romanians to be gipsies You know, the weirdest thing is when those stupid and stereotypes creep into your mind and you can hardly realising that you generalize people without a basis. I try not to, but it's not easy.

I am by no means patriotic or anything, but if someone starts this discussion here, it is going to get bad. For all of us. Just a fair warning, all other Romanians know what I mean here. So please let it die.

I hope noone misunderstood me. I am not more patriotic than any usual guy who loves his country (I think). I personally don't feel that Transylvania "belongs to Hungary by right and we WILL have it back" nothing like this. I never intended to start a "discussion" about how unfair this or that "peace" was or wasn't.
That part simply belongs to my general knowledge about Romania. The starter of the thread asked to write all we know, be it "bad" or not. I suppose he asked so because he would likes to know how his country is percieved (please correct me if I'm wrong).

So no war for Transylvania, ok? *gives a hand for shake*

Don't worry mate, I personally don't give a crap about the subject, all what I was trying to point out is that SOME are very sensitive about the subject, both Romanians and Hungarians, and it may turn out ugly.

Nastase, Tiriac.

Ceausescu
Vlaad Tepesz

Transylvania
Walachei (this is a common word used in german for something "in the middle of nowhere" )

I have never been to Romania, so I can't say anything about the country itself.
