They sure can take a lot of punishment but I have doubts about them. I played them a lot when I got HoF and I must say I find they really lack some punch.

I don't mean to criticize but playing hotseat with yourself you can't expect to draw definite conclusions. For instance, in your game the Necromancer attacked the city so the Fortress hero had a big advantage (the cities of this faction have the best defences with a high town level to boot) and since it was late in the game runes could be used without fear of wasting resources.

There is a truth about Homm and it's that you learn a lot by playing against other humans. What I mean is that if you try to take a city with a Fortress army, it won't be a piece of cake, unless the dwarf hero can take out the walls quickly. A human player when he is besieged doesn't leave the protection of his walls so that the assaillant can slaughter his troops in the open field.

Actually, preparation is not as good as you may think. Fortress often stays shorthanded in range battle so itīs better to charge. And when your units stay defending your oportunities to cooporate down a single stack is wasted, wich means that you still will win to charge in stacks, even when creeping.

Cleave, the siege was not late, it was mid game.

And the fortress army had fought off  a fresh heaven army AND a fresh stronghold army outside the city.

Also, with march of death the necro is good at city seige.. But their stack of ranged made pancakes off my vampires... It also helped alot that the fortress hero also had raise dead.. if he rose 2 thanes then they would last long.. then I rose the blackbears and they last a while.. I'm not kidding, he had 200 mana.. some sick perks he got himself and the star isus regalia..

Without raise dead necro would win, without cleansing necro would win.

And yes, I know that playing hotseat with myself is bouth sad and not very... good? But I actually did it to pwn in some huge battles with necro... The problem was that the fortress pwned everyone due to a nice defence!

Do you mean that the Runemage hero had the entire Sar-Issus Regalia? That's spellpower and mana x2 (with an ATB bonus when casting). No wonder the Necromancer got killed...

Death March while being a slight advantage doesn't alter the fact that the defences of the dwarves were pretty heavy (meaning your vampires couldn't get into action at all). IMHO this more than counterbalances the two previous fights with the Haven and the Stronghold factions (notwithstanding the fact that the Runemage got XP and artefacts in these battles).

I wonder how the Runemage would have fared without the Sar-Issus Regalia, I believe thinks would have been much more difficult for the dwarves.

Actually for testing reasons it is not so bad to play hotseat like you did. I believe though that it's very hard not to take sides.

Well.. I definatly took sides with the necro.. and the necro lost : P

And the runemage did not have the entier set, but only 2 arties (he had crown and .... what was it.. dont remember..) but still, that doubles mana and spellpower. He also had some nifty skills that halved his mana use. So theoreticly he had 4 times the normal mana...

The runemage was only 2-3 levles more then the necro cause the necro cleaned out some dragon utopias and some other buildings like that.

And the vamps got into action, they took out the thanes, the runemages, and the blackbears. However, the runemage raised them all the time.

Well, the story was. The necro sent the vamps inside the castle, the runemage sent the magmas out through the gate. The magmas whiped out alot of guys, the vamps wiped out alot of guys. But what killed me was the huge stack of mountain guards. The runemage was protector so he gave a nice bonus to the mountain guards. I think they had 55 deff in the last battle ^^

Without arties, AND without spells (since the necro could not cast much it didn't benefit at all..) the necro would have won. If the runemage did not get raise dead, the necro would have won.. It was a VERY close battle! He survived with like 10% of his mountainguard stack. And that was IT!

What I ment is that the fortress town benefit from defence, the stronghold benefit attack..

And what I also ment is "Stick with what you get" as the title of this topic question us about.

Oh, and sorry if I was harsh or anything in my last post, wrote it in a hurry..

EDIT: If the runemage had the ENTIRE star isus regalia the necro would have won : ) If he had moved on the ATB (so that he would act before the necro) then the necro could cast PM and frenzy.. So having alot of nice bonuses might not be so nice : ) As I said, the runemage was RIGHT after the necro every turn since bouth had exp sorcery. And he had lots of mana and exp light with master of blessings (thats the one that gives better clense, right? whatever, he had the one that gave better clense) so he could clense forever! : ( poor necro..

No offence but that's sounds weird to me. Magma dragons could have stayed inside to wipe out the vampires (dunno why the necro sent them, that's a bit of a sacrifice).

The real threats for the Runemage were the liches and the skeletons (and that's what the towers shoot at). A few firewalls and the protective formation of the skeletons is disrupted.

As long as the walls don't fall the wights are useless. If the ghosts, dragons and vampires get inside the walls they're as good as dead.

Anyway that's the way I see it. Perhaps I'm just plainly wrong but I wouldn't have rushed the magma dragons out (that's what the AI tends to do).

Back on topic: I agree that pushing a faction's advantage to the limit is certainly a good idea since the higher bonuses you get, the more effective your army will be.
