Infection
I am in desperate need of help. My computer has been infected by...
Antivirus programs. it started when my old antivirus software expired. And soon afterward i accidentaly installed a program...
The next day It did a scan and detected 1 virus...
I ran another scan 20 minutes later when files were automatically being downloaded. the scan revealed about 200 viruses. Then i found a better antivirus and the previous one will not uninstall and is downloading viruses onto my computer... I have 7 antivirus which only two of were installed by a user. One is inside a hidden file. and the other simply won't uninstall... i can hit the uninstall but nothing happens and thirty seconds later i get notified that several new viruses have been detected.
HELP.
note: i have tried removing them but to no avail.

You could reinstall your computer. If you won't, try AVG. It's a free virus-program.

Serious issues dude. Man I will ever never installing Norton ar any other, when I get a new PC next year, Im only going for Spybot and AVG Free with the included firewall of course. Avast aint good at all, well it depends but mostly I feel its a risky program.
I dont know how to help you exactly besides what I alredy said...Hmm isolate the most valuable files, burn them or something to a source and install/transmit them to a new HD, couldnt be that expensive.
Reinstalling??? Sure that helps? I mean the crap such anti virus programs are even found in the root of the HD, some may be still there even after reinstalling

For, your problem, I had the same problem...I had to replace my harddrive for it to stop... it sucks, but nothing else would work

The idea that anti-virus-program developers develop virusses of their own to stay in business doesn't sound too illogical to me. I don't trust anti-virus programs if you have to pay for them. That aside, most are too troublesome and require too much of your attention.
Ad-aware I like.

Sounds ridicolous to me. Someone would have found out easily enough. Fact is though that theyre a lot of bother for very little gain . Having a lot of them sometimes means they conflict with each other though.
If your already going for a free version go for a reputable one and one alone.

Reinstalling the computer is not a good idea, just yet anyway.
You should do virus scans, if it finds any viruses kill them, then format your hard drive and THEN reinstall your computer.
Be sure to get good anti-virus programs and also be aware of spyware, because that can also be dangerous.

Before running antivirus take your system restore off so the viruses won't be coming back from there. Also taking internet connection off might prevent them from dowloading new ones at the same time. Make the antivirus scan go at the startup. This way it can have more of the HD to itself.
If you plan to format your HD and reinstall OS then you should install firewall and antivirus before connecting your pc to the net. If you have windows it's only seconds before it's infected if you don't have firewall. No windows firewall isn't enough. It sucks. With linux or Mac you can take your chances but still better to install them before going online.
AVG or Avast for antivirus. Avast seems to bug for some people though. So maybe AVG.
ZoneAlarm for firewall. There are others but judjing from your post you don't have much experience with PCs so just take ZA.
Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware or Windows Defender for antispyware. Spybot uses most resources but is better than the other too. It's realtime also tends to inform you about everything at default. Windows defender needs a legal windows so maybe Ad-Aware is the best.
Or if you have money take F-Secure. It's the best there is and covers everything: firewall, antivirus and antispyware. Uses a huge amount of resources though. So under 800MHz PCs won't run properly with it. Shouldn't be a problem nowadays.

I have no active firewall (well maybe my windows firewall), because Zonealarm stuffed up my internet, and I had to do all this weird stuff to totally delete it.

Simply reinstalling windows doesn't delete the virus. Many free anti-virus programs doesn't find all viruses on your computer either. If you use some better program and have no license it checks all the viruses but doesn't delete them. You can delete them manually tough by finding the files your self and deleting them.
Best would be download some good anti-virus device and find a crack for it (most work whit updates!). I have had 2 times Troijan first time i just formatted my computer but second time i get rid of it by good anti-virus programs.
If you have good anti-virus program you won't get those nasty viruses on the future either.

The only 100% sure way to get rid of viruses is to "format" your HD. Do you think viruses are something more magical than a bunch of data on your hard disk? formatting clears everything (format everything, EVERYTHING, including your OS, obviously this means you'll need to reformat from something else like BIOS or a mini OS like MS-DOS from CD/USB stick, etc).
Install some Anti-virus software before logging on to the NET. And you can always disconnect your computer from the internet/modem you know? if you want to have some 'peace' while eliminating or getting rid of viruses.
I use NOD32, but it's not free though

They are not viruses, FFS!!! They are VIRUS SIGNATURES that some (mainly older) antiviruses use to recognize the viruses. I can't belive none of the people who posted know this!

Yes, those infections aren't actual viruses. Advertisement, browser hijackers, tracking cookies... all useless stuff what you want off from your computer. It can delete viruses also but first time i had it left "traits" and every time i opened computer it connected to Internet from my IP. Formation was only option.
