Alow similar topics to coexist

I notice its a mods dute or pleasure to lock threads which hold the slightest similarity to another thread. This has always tweaked me. Every thread is different even if they have a similar focus. And this particular case that inspired me to post this only had two words in common. Belief in God. Sep made a POLL, and wanted to ask CURRENT members if they believe in god. It was locked on the 9th post.

How do I cut this short and get the message across.... I cant... I just think its not cool that we have to confine NEW IDEAS to OLD TOPICS.

I agree, what's SO wrong with having some similar threads in HC?

I also noticed this happening:

1. Someone makes a similar thread.

2. The thread does really good with lots of replies and interest.

3. Some Mod says that there's already a similar thread, locks and revives the old thread.

4. All the interest dies cause people see that there's nothing more to add that wasn't said.

Conclusion: Mods are Evil fun ruiners!

Similar isn't so bad, however, if it is basically the same thread but is newer, then I see no problem with locking it.

I would, actually, think about locking the older post, if it was old and dead/inactive.

And what is the point of that? Just because they are old, doesn't mean they should be locked.

It's a delicate balance. Indeed, sometimes what TNT describes happens. However, other times both threads are active, and we have seen several examples of double-discussions where the same things are argued over twice.

From a more practical view, more threads covering the same makes the fora more clotted and makes it more difficult to find the information you're looking for.

We do not close threads if the similar thread is inactive for a year or more of course.
But if 2 or even 3 threads about nearly the same topic run parallel, there is no sense in keeping all of them.

By doing that, it gives members a chance to lok back at what other people had to say before them too - if they post a topic that they're interested - it could be of interest to them to see the old thread.

Theres 2 sides to the argument, I do admit

But locking and deleting threads from the same ball park as another thread, destroys flexibility. If thread making was an art, my canvice would be used.

I think it also depends on the effort of the thread maker. If the original post is great and in-depth and adds a personal view to a topic, I'd be more prompted to let the thread remain open than if there is a one-line question about something which is already discussed elsewhere. The latter happens a lot!
