HoMM being a multiplayer game? Nah!
All the HoMM titles were for the mature players whom like to gather around the same PC and, enjoy the same room's rivalry through strategy and what someone you know is about to do a blitz attack onto your town. The never ending Diplomacy of who will backstab a treatied ally at some point in the game. Now, that is what is wrong with multiplayer mode of this game - Permanent alliances and no real Diplomacy at when to make the peace or alliance treaty + no end to the treaty and no treachery attacks either.
This game is for single player or, HotSeat, Local Area Networking in rather the House Network or Large Office/Apartment Building's immediate surroundings of the current multiplay environment. NOT for Online Internet Connectivity like Super Server environment.
HoMM5 v.1.0 is still being sold in many games stores like EBgames and, sided by Hammers of Fate v.2.0 + Tribes of the East v.3.0 as an entrance level stand alone expansion for Windows Vista(Basic and Premium alike). It will not be forgotten yet, a lot more noobs are still trying it and, probably likes it as single-player above all else.
T.o.t.E. is now at v.3.1 and works ok at 800x600 res. and very low quality graphics without a GPU equipped card. I should know, I just finished an RMG made Tiny map with only one AI opponent. 25 days/turns and, Blood-Eyed Cyclops as enraged and aggressive rank of a player that I am. Note: A noob player would have been beaten quite easily by day 15-17. The AI tried its luck in the middle of third week by opening the only two-way dimension gate of the map and, backed up right away as it realized how developped and totally really for it I was. The game was set at only 'Normal' in difficulty. At end of the game my starting town was all the way to Castle status with the ability to hire level 5 Priests. The total soldier count was well over 525 of them and, the Hero reached level 11. No cheating codes in use what-so-ever.
BTW: HoMM5 riginal in its Closed Beta stage was working fine to me in single-playing mode. Absolutely no complaints what-so-ever. And, no patches needed either. That was, as of today, 3 full years ago. My current machine was a mere 1 year old, at that time.

I also got a message but it was pretty nice (okey it was weird, about the joint point forum project was a fan-made HoMM6 mod and HoMM6 or a "WinVista" version and a major patch would be announched soon).
