ICTC3: The Reserve

A Town:        The Reserve

Race history:  Young knight Cortzas began his career in Human army at very young age. As a private he did not have good opinion, supposedly he wasn`t useful on battlefield, used to be untrustworthy and lacked of discipline. It couldn`t be otherwise due to his sincere statements and seeing most problems in army`s command-in-chief. He didn`t lose self-confidence, knowing that as soon as he got promoted his problems would end. He knew he`s poor private but believed to be great leader.
Unfortunately, nobody else shared his aspirations, and his demands for promotion only irritated superiors. Finally, Cortzas was dismissed.
When a new land between the continents of Antagarich, Enroth, Jadame was discovered, Kreegans decided to declare contest to create a new town and proclaim its creator a king. It was a perfect moment for Cortzas`s coming back. He spent previous years remaining in exile, traveling through worlds like Xeen, Cron, Terra, Varn i Havec. He knew this task wouldn`t be easy. He was unknown for Kreegans Community, had never tried something like this before and he was having very little time to be noticed. He was alone with his great project, without any technical support or magical visions and graphs.
Despite this, he believed that after so many years of traveling he found such fantastic creatures that his idea for town would be appreciated. Town of creatures with not quite inflated statistics, but every one of them with unique and original specialty, which in hands of clever hero could be unbeaten. Town called Reserve.

Race specialty:  Ability to secure dragons support became Reserve`s heroes` specialty. No callow hero (beginner) could give orders to dragons, since these mighty and proud creatures became really free. There were many dragons` dwellings but no town could raise dragon on its own, except Necropolis and their Bone and Ghost Dragons. Other Reserve`s heroes` specialty was ability to create fog of battlefield. Because of it, troops on battlefield were able to see only as far as they could move; the rest of field was covered by fog. Troops in fog couldn`t be attacked by ranged or magical attack. Quick creatures of Reserve had advantage thanks to this fog, if they were commanded by a smart hero

Creatures:
Level 1
Ofion - creature can move under the ground. Then it is invisible for opponent and unreachable for friendly and hostile magic. It can attack with poison, which inflicts huge damage, but just after a few turns.

Level 2
Euryale - creature with ranged attack. Its attack leaves phlegm on target. Phlegm will repeat damage if infected troop moves. If the troop does nothing (lost its turn) phlegm shall disappear.

Level 3
Steno - creature with 2-headed attack. One inflicts normal damage, the other drains almost whole life leaving one health point. It can hit and then drain or otherwise, depending on benefits for itself.

Level 4
Souldrainer - creature changes itself in creature that just attacks. It can become strong after attacking strong enemy or weak after retaliating attack of weak enemy.

Level 5
Chimera - very chimerical creature. Before each turn this creature changes its statistics. Attack, Defend and Speed in range of 5-15, Damage 5-25 and Health 50-150. Every turn it changes statistics, appearance and battle usefulness.

Level 6
Cutter - very quick creature, which inflicts damage to all enemies in its way, but can move only in straight line. Thanks to its great reflex, when enemy tries to attack it, Cutter will strike first.

Level 7
Stymphalian bird - creature with flying ability. It has mighty claws which could transport friendly troops even beyond obstacles and city walls. This creature knows two powerful songs - deafening and soporific. Deafened troop doesn`t respond to orders, so it attacks only enemy in its range of movement. If there is no enemy, creature shall do nothing. Dormant enemy can`t move until being attacked or adjacent troop moves or gets damage.

Cohesiveness: 1/10 (at least it is a fantasy setting)

Imagination: 5/15 (I can't say much about it, but some good ideas)

Back story: 2/10 (Cortzas is you and this forum is Kreegan? Nice twist I wonder what's the forum Cortzas were fired from )

Battle facets: 2/10 (some interesting ideas but not at all balanced)

Discretionary: 1/5 (for the humour and some quite nice approaches)

11/50

first off, I apologize because this review will be R-E-A-L-L-Y harsh and is quite possibly the harshest post written in my whole life in every forum. I was tempted to simply mark this town as not-classified to spare the awful marks it's going to get, but wouldn't have been honest because it's definitely a completed entry, and there's no real reason not to mark it.

Cohesiveness: 6/10 points I catch a small referring to greek mythology here, so I won't say it gots no coherence at all. I'm also pretending to ignore everything negative about this faction (which will be elaborated in the following marks) and just pretend that the reason for these greek mythical beasts (some of whom are actually deities, but I'm trying to ignore it and give the highest mark possible) to stay together, which is that some space-traveler found them and closed them to a zoo or "reserve", makes sense. So let's give you a sufficient mark here.

Imagination: 10/15 points giving some points because a space-traveler going from planet to planet assembling a weird army is something unheard of. It reminds me a sci-fi story I've readen as a child. I'm also struggling to raise your mark. I can't go higher than this when you don't bother to descript outfits, make hero bios, or put half the creative work most people did in your faction.

Back story:  0/10 points honestly it would have been a lot better if the story in the above post wasn't written; if a negative mark was available, you'd be getting it. You see, this less-than-veiled metaphor is strongly suspected of being an attempt to draw our sympathies, which obtains the opposite effect. You basically complain that you are a unknown poster, your work has no graphs or pictures, and no statistics (now, guess who is in your same situation? Me). Now, you can hope to get a good mark nonetheless, but your sad little story sounded a lot like an attempt to get a good mark not despite your work is lacking, but exactly BECAUSE your work is lacking. Which feels insulting and not honest.

Battle facets:  0/10 points things get a lot worse here. Your attempt to create "interesting creatures" with "not quite inflated statistics" which need a "clever hero" (once again this is irritating: sounds a lot like you are attacking the other entrants for making uberpowerful, straightforward creatures) crashes miserably and the reason seems to be that you completely misunderstood how the game works. Statistics are the last reason for making something overpowered, as they can easily be fixed with a patch; game-mechanics are often what gets out of control. Most of your game mechanics are completely overpowered and it takes no intelligence at all to win. For instance A SINGLE UNIT OF YOUR LVL1 CREATURE MAKES THE BATTLE IMPOSSIBLE TO LOSE; just hide an ofion under the ground and the opponent is stuck with the impossibility reaching the ofion and finishing your army off (thus winning the duel). I could nerf the statistics of the ofion to no end and it would still be completley broken. Then, the creatures which aren't overpowered and look apparently interesting are even less tactical: Souldrainer copies the creatures it attacks, so whoever wins is who has the highest number of units in the stack (how tactical!) whreas chimera is completely unreliable and rewards not skill, but pure luck. In short, this faction claim it's tactical, but it's not, in every way, shape or form.

Discretionary: 1/5 points there's someting interesting in the zoo idea, and the town could have had a good look. Hated everything else and it's not needed to repeat here how and why. In all honesty I would have preferred not writing this review at all, because bashing the work of other it's never a noble occupation. The most positive thing I can tell you is that there's no reason you can't do a better job for the next ICTC, just have more trust in yourself and focus on the job, rather than on your own insecurity.

Overall Score:  17/50

Cohesiveness: 0/10 it may be cohesive, but I have no idea what most of those creatures are, and you don't help me.

Imagination: 5/15 there's not much to say unfortnunately

Back story: 2/10 wt..? at least there is a story...

Battle facets: 4/10 some good ideas, but quite poor overall. I don't understand the 1st racial ability.

Discretionary: 0/5 for the lack of work.

11/50 at least it was an easy review. maybe you should deserve a +1 for that.

The Reserve

Cohesiveness(1+2)=3
Imagination(2+1+2)=5
Back Story(0+1)=1 Hum, you get one point because the metaphor is quiet smart (I didn't get it first)
Battle Facets(2+0)=2

Discretionary: -1 for no emblem

This entry is severely incomplete!

Total Score=10

How I graded these:
Cohesiveness (Internal Coherence [1-5]+HoMM Compatibility [1-5])
Imagination (Creativity [1-5]+Innovations [1-5]+Originality[1-5])
Back Story (How well it expands on one of the HoMM universes [1-5]+How interesting it was to me [1-5])
Battle Facets (Variety [1-5]+Inventive Aspects [1-5])
Discretionary (Bonus for exceptional efforts[1-5])
