New recource: Food?

This is an idea I got from reading this rather excellent thread.  And I got to thinking, how are you feeding all these people?  This led me to contemplate the possiblility of a new recource, food, gathered from a new mine: farms.  There could be some creaturese that gather food from kills in combat, such as Dragons, Manticores, Cyclops, etc.

The food could work for Humans (Knights/Wizards), Elves (Wood/Dark), Dwarves, Orcs, and ?Nagas? but not for the Necromancers.  My thought is this could be either Dark Energy or Bones, and would serve as a Dark Energy amount, as opposed to a bar.  DE would be collective.  The amount can be increased by flagging farms, which are corrupted when flagged (and then purified if flagged by a non Necro race)

Since Academy has so many mechanical/summoned creatures perhaps food is replaced by inscence/gears/Shared Mana?

I don't know if demons eat, but...meh, they won't be in HVI anyway.

About food: Like gold it builds up as city and population increase (see the link at the top of the thread) and you have to feed your armies at the begining of the week/month.  All creatures have a food need (except undead, who need DE?) but for lower levels it is usually low, like

1 unit of food for every 10 peasents
1 unit for every 7 Archers
1 unit for every 5 swordsmen
1 unit for every 2 Griffins
1 unit for every Preist
2 units for every Champion
- - - for angels.  They don't eat.

So assuming you had quite a large army (100 Pez, 80 Arc, 60 Sws, 42 Gif, 20 pri, 10 Ch, 3 Angls) it would only cost about 120 food, which is more than is produced daily by this time in your city.

Food can be gained by enemies if they seige your castle.

What do you think?

It could certainly work just as you could assume they are mercenaries and consume a daily fee. Still I rather prefer the simplicity the game has so far, I don't think that adding another 'mine' would make it more fun. Maybe in special cases such as a summoned or magical creature that requires a sort of sacrifice each day to remain in your army.

I think all should be affected by food.
Why cant undeads eat flesh? Or made they could use the meat to create cretures like Zombies and Flesh Golems?
I came up with the food idea (on these forums) in the population thread for my heroes 6.
Its good that we can develope the idea.

And i dont think you should be able to get food from the battlefield.. eat dead bodies?
Maybe undeads could do that but other factions...

And as i said in population thread and Daystar later in this one, i think the new rescourse place should be Farm.

Well with a bit o' lo' tweaking, that shouldn't be a problem.

btw: Here is an idea for extra rescources: Living, beasts, dragons consume food; Undead consume mercury, Infernal consume sulphur. Mechanics consume Ore and Elementals consume mana (from the hero's spellbook. I think this is a good idea for Elvins Idea.

btw this isn't Another Fool's April joke, I hope

it is good idea that catapult spends ore and ballista to spend wood while shooting (1 unit for 10 shots, nothing drastic)
what do they make their ammo with? - if battle is in dessert?

food could be ok if we keep it simple, but only for simplified population, definitely not for upkeeping armies..

The feeding dark energy to your undead army would be just a terrible nerf to the necromancers.

Why add food as a new resource anyway? To limit army size so it wont grow too much since you have to pay for them every week and need the resource to hire the creatures?

Why not just make creatures cost wood and ore because their equipment won't just pop out of nowhere and neither does the materials for building gargoyles or golems. Then the weekly cost would be from repairing the equipment. The weekly cost for repairing the equipment would be minimal and Wood/ore production would be increased slightly to support the army's need. Necromancer's wouldn't need to use resources to get their army the equipment because seemingly everyone in Ashan is buried with some battlegear (you know that the Necromancers always had a thing for cheap, plentiful and weak troops). One might also scavenge the equipment from creeps and rival heroes therefore gaining wood & ore.

Saying that it would be stupid to pay 1 wood per peasant? Why not reduce the resources value so that new HoMM 100 wood/ore = 1 old HoMM wood/ore. The mines would produce 200 wood/ore per day and a building that costed 5 wood would cost 500 wood. Rare resources keep their original value.

I don't really think that this kind of thing would work, but what do you think of my version of this idea?

Food counts as little more than upkeep, which wouldn't really do much for the game in my opinion, it works better with Civilisation, or Space Empires (produced by Malfador Machinations for those of you who haven't heard of it before).

Cossacks:EW had upkeep, and let me tell you, that was a slow game, I was usually just getting into the action in the same time it took me to finish comparably sized games in AoE, great if you like a game that's fairly realistic, not so much for those in it for quick action.

If it added something, however, could be interesting.  Like for instance, food could lead to increase in population.  Or reduce gold cost, because production is increased (for building etc).  For those affected by such things, maybe even morale.  Your people are happy because you feed them good.  Excess food (if any) could be sold at the market.

Now lack of food would do things like lower population growth, increase costs, reduce morale, ect.  Of course food would be the cheapest resource by far.  Both buying and selling.  For the Undead, I don't think it would be DE, but something similar.  Just no idea what yet.  Would have to give them some other sort of bonus/penalty.

This is a rather splendid idea. I have always wondered what the inhabitants of each town eats and drinks, though I thought that the resources and gold spent were paid for the food each unit needed. Kinda invisible food but the theory seems fit.

Why not create a race for the Undead? Something like "The Damned" or the like. A race obsessed with death and life after death. Prisoners and slaves where raised as skeletons whereas the damned will be converted in zombies, vampires and liches according to their wealth, position and suitability. Naturally the aim of a damned is to do well enough in their life to become a mighty lich afterwards. Oh, and naturally the highest punishment is to be cremated and not raised at all.

I should use this idea in an own Heroes 6 concept I think... hm... yes.

Oh, I must add that this helps if food is used for population only, but not if it is for upkeep too.

Problem with the idea is this, Undead (as far as I can tell) don't eat, which leaves them with no food cost, similar with the Academy (Mages and Gremlins only), yet places like the Haven and Fortress would need huge amounts of food, which makes me think this would lead to an imbalanced style of play.
