Disclaimer: I have not read the entire thread.
I just wanted to say a few things on the topic. Not being american, I can't say I don't agree with the idea discussed here. Turning towards a "national exclusivism", if you please, is a natural phenomenon in any country.
At any given time, when a teritorialy large state (and by "large" I don't have a certain surface in mind) integrates a number of aliens ( the biggest differences are religious and language related, but in fact they go as deep as mentalities ), the "core population" ( by which I mean the original ethnic/religious nucleus ) will rebel against this intrusion.
It's just a natural reaction to what we may call a, one again if you will, "non-agressive invasion." When Greece was taken by the romans and integrated as a province, a common saying ( I think it was Plautus that came up with it) was "conquered we conquer." This was meant to illustrate that although under the political and military domination of Rome, the Greeks, trough their superior culture, were conquering the romans. And indeed, greek art and the language itself were totally embraced by the romans. Of course, that was the case of a superpower integrating a highly developed cultural group by force. The case is here opposite: a superpower being peacefully infiltrated by poorly civilised groups ( as in low educated and facing poverty )
Therefore, it is only natural that americans begin having a negative reaction towards immigrants, perceiving them as a destabilizing factor.
Is national exclusivness the way to go? Everybody has their own opinion. I personally would say "yes."

Another thing the politicians and media have done a very poor job of is distinguishing between immigration and illegal immigration. They are two separate but related issues.
I've heard estimates all over the place for the number of illegal immigrants. But most estimates seem to be about 8-12 million. For a long time I took this number at face value. But when I actually thought about it, I've become skeptical. TWELVE MILLION illegal immigrants??? One out of 25 people in the US are illegal immigrants??? I'm just curious if anyone else finds this number hard to believe? I have no way of refuting it, except it just seems like too many. And just remember there are very large parts of the country that has very few immigrants, like where I live now.
As for legal immigration, when talking about Mexicans, keep in mind that Mexicans are less than 15% of total immigrants. And they are only about 1/3 of total Hispanic immigrants. So Hispanics are about 45% of the total immigrants. There are more European immigrants than Mexicans. And there are more than twice as many Asian immigrants as Mexicans.
When it comes to legal immigration, the US does the same thing every other country does (as far as I know). To my knowledge there are no countries that have a completely open door policy when it comes to immigration. All countries make rules about which types of people they want. Very often this will be people with certain types of education or experience. In the US there is basically a set of different criteria which are prioritized. So there is essentially a list, with people meeting the qualifications closer to the top of the list having the best chance of admittance.
The US places a high importance on keeping families together. So having family already in the country is by far the number one reason for immigration. The second highest is employment related. Third highest, about 13%, are refugees (also includes asylees which are slightly different). Forth, about 5%, is diversity*. Those four groups makes up the vast majority of immigrants.
Approximately 20% of the entire world population of immigrants is in the US. (I don't entirely trust this number and I want to check it out more.)
* Diversity: The US makes an attempt to diversify the population by trying to get people from all nations as immigrants. They analyze the countries immigrants come from, and any country that is under represented becomes part of the diversity program. This is the so called green card lottery. If someone is a citizen of one of these countries, they can apply for the green card lottery. They don't need any reason to want to immigrate other than they just want to. The lottery is once a year, and a person can apply every year.
Not much of a specific point in all this , just random information.

These numbers are closer to correct than you think. Think about this, when Bush implemented this last law in regard to immigrants Phoenix AZ went nuts. Over a hundred thousand Mexicans showed up on the steps of the Capitol to protest. These people were mainly just from Phoenix and the estimate was that over half were illegal, due to the fact that INS showed up and they scattered like cockroaches. So about fifty thousand in just one small area and that was not all of them. Now take the whole USA and they figure about one in twenty.
