Baffling Mystery

In my small vegetable plot, on one side, I have an ivy growing.

On the other side of my plot, a rose bush starting to sprout.

In between the two plants are several fava bean plants.

Now here's the baffling part, the ivy sends out a shoot, not just in any random direction but straight towards the rose bush.  (notice how, in the first picture, there is a lack of any other shoots besides the one I'm referring to).

It blows past my fava beans, growing under them, or over them, and ignoring them completely....

and then it leaps onto the rose bush, a meter away.

So the question is, how did my ivy know where the rose bush was???

plants "communicate" with each other with chemicals. They also participate in "chemical wars". So much I've learned when studying biology. I think that answers the question

that creates more questions though.  If it smells the rose bush, how does it know what direction to go in?  bugs can find something that smells by constantly buzzing about and measuring intensities, but plants can't do that.

also how did it know to ignore the favas and hit up on the rose bush instead, are there "mung on rose bush" genes encoded in its DNA?

There is a simple answer to this question FOG.

Put yourself in the ivy's shoes (so to speak)

What would you latch onto..
some fava beans or a loverly rose bush

I Love Botany!

Your question, at least in my mind, pertains to the mystery of life. Who can say where life will take us? That is its beauty and also the greatest adventure.

Long time no see! Haven't heard from you in a very long time! It's good to see another thread from you! Wo_OT

I sincerely hope you and your wife are doing well!

Thanks

Yeah, I'm not as active as I used to be.  I got a 40 hour a week hard-labor job that sucks me dry.

re botany, yeah I think botany is under-rated.  It's almost impossible to find botany books though that truly capture the drama of the plant world. (and there is a lot of drama)

my overzealous neighbor came by yesterday and laid waste to my garden, probably thinking the favas were weeds.

now I'll never find out what fresh favas look like
