Final Fantasy Tactics A2 Grimoire of the Rift
I recently picked up this game because I loved the first one. If you liked the first, or turn based RPGs, you should definatly get this game.
The game's story is a little less deep, but the gameplay has imporved quite a bit. The game is based off of the world in FFXII and you get to meet some of the characters from that game, as well as some of the ones from the first Tactics Advance. And for those of you who hated the judges in the first game, you're in luck, no more going to jail!
There are also 2 new races and a whole bunch of new job classes as well. And with the power of the DS, the graphics have gotten a nice upgrade too.
Here is the website for the game if you are interested. Please share your thoughts.

Let's say that I loved Advance Wars DS and Tactics Ogre, but disliked Fire Emblem (GBA) and prefer "open gameplay" to a linear story or campaign mode.

Do you think I'd like FFTA2?

Well with all the different possible classes you could use, and such it is hard to give advice.  Forget the law also, so the advice may have to change.

Make sure to have finished the first clan trials, especially the one that comes after the 1st four.  Lets you regen every turn.  Another thing is make sure to use a lot of distance attackers, but a couple of close attackers (especially a dragoon) is good also.  A lot of healing in the second action slot is good also.  Now, your dragoon should be able to use air render also (the white monk ability) and besides getting them off of you ignore the other bugs.  They just get replaced when killed.  Kill a few to buy you time, but other then that focus on the flowsand boss.

Put the dragon close to the flowsand creature, with a couple of other close attackers on the other side (not close to the dragoon).  Hopefully this will cause it to focus on the dragoon, instead of hitting everybody.  It draws him in and heals itself, but you should be able to do enough damage it won't matter.  If regen is not an option, use speed for your clan privilage.  Anyhow, keep a couple of healers back but able to heal your close attackers.  They should be able to also do damage from a distance when not healing (black magic, archery, SOMETHING).  Should be enough to take him down.

VMV - There is a series of story line quests, but a LOT of side quests that you can take as you please.  It is pretty open, even if there are certain quests you have to finish.

It's basically as Mytical said.
Make sure everyone in your clan, or at least the troops you will be using, are of level 17 or higher. I tried this mission when all of my clanees were around level 12 and your troops just arent strong enough. I'd have to say though, that this is one of the harder story missions in the game. If I recall correctly, the flowsand lord, along with the antlions, are weak to wind, so try to have either wind spells or wind weapons, it will help a lot, especially if its on one of your troops that does high damage (dragoon, gladiator etc.). What I did was completly ignore the antlions and go stright for the big boss. That way, instead of wasting time attacking the smaller guys, you wait and your next turn comes faster. When I went up against him, I had these I was using: fighter, dragoon, archer, theif, sage/black mage, red mage/white mage. So pretty much the basic strategy for this fight (that I used)is just go all out against the flowsand lord. Send in your troops and get them to him asap and start attacking. Make sure to have at least one person who can heal or use healing items at the very least because he can dish out some pretty heavy damage. And it would be best to have at least one attack ascociated with wind (I had the sage's wind spell and my fighter had a wind blade).

If you like games like advance wars, then you will probably like this too. There are story based missions which you must to do progress the game and make more missions available, but there are plenty of other missions and side quests. If I'm not mistaken, theres 400 missions in total. I've been playing this game a lot and I havnt even come close to completing all of them.

Oh, and if you're unsure of what to make of an extra moogle or bangaa in your clan make them either a fusilier or flintlock(moogle jobs) or a canoneer(bangaa job). Trust me, they're super awesome! I have a canoneer who used to be a dragoon, so he's got high damage, HP and defense and huge range.

regen? doh why didn't i use my regenra *slaps forehead*
anyway what did everyone make their starting 6 characters be?
my hero is bluemage/pally
the numou is time/blackmage
the bangaa is templar/bishop
the viera is my most powerful elementalist/summoner
the moogle is a moogknight/with items

2. Popocho's chocobos gives the job chocobo knight, which moogles can learn.

Just necause your clanees are higher level than the ranks of the quest, doesnt mean it will be successful 100%, just thats its more likely it will. It's also possible that the quest requested a specific job class.
If Doom is placed on a unit, but said unit has an item which makes them immune to KO, when the cuontdown reaches 0 nothing will happen. They also will not be effected by other instant death abilites like last breath.

Yeah, there is way too many quests to go to each seperately, and unless you are lucky or have the exact specified requirements it fails almost all the time.

After losing a ridiculous about of time due to the absolutely stupid Judge system in the first, I haven't really felt like getting into another Final Fantasy Tactics game.

Nothing like getting a no hitting monsters, no magic, and no physical attacks on a map full of monsters.

This is a bit different.  Though there are a few that you automatically loose or such for not following the rules..there is no jail or anything.  What happens is you just don't get some free stuff if you break the law.  Can't revive for remainder of fight either.  Beyond that..nothing much happens.

Yea thats pretty much it. If you brake the law you can no longer revive your KO'd party members and at the end of the battle you dont get the bonus stuff. Later in the game however, you do get some pretty rare loot from the end of battle bonus, so it's advised to attempt following the law whenever possible. But some laws are just really stupid and deserve to be broken, like having to move 1 space each turn, no more no less.
