Why do you guys like to argue so much?

This isn't a joke thread! lol

I'm really interested in why you constant debaters get such a kick out of engaging each other wherever and whenever you can.

I'm not aiming this at anyone in particular, but hoping that maybe some of the responses will shed some light on why people post as they do.

I can't imagine that the answer is that you like to prove you're right all the time, because I can't say that I've ever really seen anyone do that in a thread here

I'm guessing that its more enjoyment of the metal challenge that comes with debating someone. I see it as a sign of respect for someone when you constantly want to engage them in conversation about different points.

Is it a thrill thing - like a gambling rush? lol I've seen many people take on the position of Devil's Advocate just to keep a debate going.

So what is it that keeps you coming back into the ring? What are your goals when you post in a debate, or turn an innocent little thread into a debate?

I feel like posting in this since it is somewhat targeted at me. Personally I don't like to get into flame wars. What I consider flame wars will become clear in a moment.

It's not like I reply to other members aggressively (well, I am talking about the Calm Arguing thread). I'm using some points. I personally find absolutely no substance what-so-ever in members calling me "delusional" or "I forgot, your subjective ideas blabla" or "you need help Death!". What is the point of such statements apart from obvious provoking into a quote war, or worse, if you do their game, get into a flame war?

I have been trying to write stuff that has reasonable background, such as saying that it's not ok to blame all the fault on your neighbor if you do the same things (metaphor). I never called anyone delusional, wacko, "someone that needs help" or other nonsense that serves no purpose.

Everytime I argue with someone sensible it's like they freak out or something If you post in a thread you should expect some answers, especially if your post includes someone else (such as OSM in that thread mentioned previously).

Anyway I hope you get my point.

We call that "burying the head in the sand"

now seriously, if you make a post, especially concerning something else that may include someone else (OSM) then be ready for a reply.

This isn't meant to be a criticizing thread at all, I really am curious about it.

I hope you and TheDeath can find a way to resolve things, its not good when things get out of hand

From my experience (and I have some, just look at CH's Might and Magic forum), this is in fact the most applicable answer

TheDeath, this isn't directed at you - its a general query

lol Cepheus, if it's true that the reason why is because they like to prove they're right - how disappointing life must be for them lol

Generally, I would agree, but when you say that a mechanistic universe and invisible pink unicorns are somehow similar... no.

Original topic:
Well, I simply have this world view, which people who have debated with me extensively know. I have this world view, and I see everything a certain way, and, to a certain extent, I don't see how people can see it otherwise. (I mean, I understand if they have rather different preferences than me, but, aside form that, I don't.) So I try to understand why people think differently from me. I post my view, and others debate me, and I try to see how other people hold such wierd and twisted views. And so the arguing starts, and, before I know it, my post count is 100 posts bigger, I've been called SELFISH, subjective, and a tyrant, and yet I have fun.

Even though you fail to give any arguments which I don't counter with mine (NOTE: this means we both have similar arguments, so mine are not better than yours, and neither yours, it means they are on the same level!!). But let us not get off topic with that here

That's exactly my point. When you give those two equal credence, then it's sometimes hard to take you seriously. No offense.

Do you honestly think that you're able to truly listen to what they're saying when in the back of your mind, you are already set in the notion that any opposing view is weird and twisted?

And yes, I saw the face, but chose to ignore it

I certainly try to consider them, but I'm usually certain that I'm correct. I just try to understand why some people think differently from me. Usually, it seems to be a difference in preferences.

The universe and unicorns are similar in three terms:

1) We have equal influence on the existence of both (none)
2) We have equal knowledge of both (none, except how we think they basically look like and function)
3) They both start with a "UN"

We could make a thread about it.
Somewhere.

Mvass, have you ever found in the course of any of the discussions you've had - that your view has changed?

I often read your posts and wish that I could get you to come back here and read them in say 15 years, and get your responses then

Baklava, there's no disputing your points - in the case of whether or not there is a link between unicorns and the universe - you win!

If I didn't know you better you'd be in such trouble kid...

You're a fine example of liking to argue, you don't even care if you know what the arguement is about - you smell it and you gots ta jump right in there.
