*sigh*

Now I know that in the VW I like to Spam a lot, but in the OSM it is not allowed. C'mon you guys - both of you are arguers, why not give a real reply to the thread instead of trying to kill it.

(and quit making me put on the modhat!)

Mvass, have you ever found in the course of any of the discussions you've had - that your view has changed?
That it changed? Yes. Though they have never changed to the view of the person I'm arguing with, my views change when a real flaw is pointed out in them. And more often, though my views don't change immediately, they change maybe a half a year afterwards, perhaps as I think further on a subject or reflect on the debate. A good example is my first quote war. It was against Baklava in IGUOBIG. We were arguing about the social contract, and I told him that it was okay to break the social contract, as long as no one noticed. He strongly argued against. At the time, I though he was wrong. I still think that a great deal of what he said then was wrong. But one thing struck me.
Me: I am one person. What could I do?
Him: But with several billion people thinking that way we have a problem.
And that has stayed with me, and now I think that we shouldn't break the social contract (non-aggression principle) under any circumstances.

Except with certain people of course
Like close friends, family & especially your GF(Wife etc)
Not the other way because women like to argue with men, they get bored easily

Omg MVas I actually stopped you from being a potential serial killer.

Seriously, I am so proud dude I sort of feel like I made a difference. A tiny little difference, but still, a difference.

Why I like to argue can be summed up easily:

1) I'm Italian.
2) I'm an attorney.

Because when people are so outrageously wrong I feel a moral obligation to enlighten them on just how wrong they are

Although sometimes in OSM I argue things with sophistry even just to oppose other beliefs. (rarely, but it happens, it's like a plague in OSM )
Like when I was about to write a reply to mvass in the 2008 Election thread about why Nuclear power is the wrong choice and then after a little while I was like, wait a second, I don't actually think that it is the wrong choice... what am I doing? eheh my bad

Think of it as the opposite of wisdom, whom we cannot measure.
Sex can be somewhat measureed, but someting like Love or Wisdom is heck alot more impossible(you migth indicate stuff and, but you can never completely pinpoint).

Topic revived, because I would ask a similar question of the Other Side:

How has the OSM (and its debates) influenced your philosophy or political/economic views?

It made me know where my stand is while reading various topics but only on matters that I didn't really thought through untill then. Online debates have no power to change someone's opinion on a thing his mind is already set BUT they can help you get to know your POV on grounds/topics you weren't familiar with.

It never shaken my confidence about matters on which I had an opinion earlier.

mvass, don't you feel compelled to revive the thread with your answer on top of it?

Not really influenced, but I learned a lot of stuff from here and there, both philosophic and political/economic, which I didn't know before.

I've become classical liberalist, instead of socialist. I also became dead inside from reading the same damn thing rephrased differently for infinite amount of times. I also realised I'm agnostic, leaning to christian morals and values.

I don't know...
Maybe there's this person who has convincing arguments against people who come up with emotional arguments...
Emotional arguments are something that just can't pull my heartstrings, when rational thoughts are present...

Don't try to rationalise love, man

And love isn't an ideology or philosophy you can attract me to. I messed up so much in the field of love that I don't want to hear someone's definition of it or discuss that rationally.

And I didn't exactly read through JJ's and your arguments anyway, since I have things to learn and worlds to discover. If we trip over something as minor as this and lose oodles and oodles amounts of time, then... Nevermind...

Economy on the other hand is something I'm very eager to listen about and discuss, since I didn't have a real economic ideology, yet, except for socialism, since I don't come from a well off family.

But liberalism is so much more ambitious...
