Essentially that's what Elves were in England (and indeed elsewhere) in those time, human-sized fairies. Of course, we 'can' credit Tolkien with making them as popular as they are, just not with inventing them.

Elves have existed in both Norse mythology and Scandinavian folklore for a loooonnngg time.
Tolkiens elves are based/ripped from the Light Elves in norse mythology (but it might also have something to do with the Aesir and Vanar).

I never credited him with their invention. I will say however that I think Tolkien seems to have drawn more inspiration from Norse mythology than from Shakespeare, as the only group of elves that are vaguely similar to those in Shakespeare's plays are the Sylvan elves and even then that's only really based on the fact that they live in forests. Other than some very superficial similarities (immortality) the other elven branches bear little resemblance.
Also, I found this on wikipedia, so the validity is somewhat in question, but if it is correct then it would suggest Tolkien did not want his elves to be synonomous with Shakespeare's fairies:

I agree with you on this one, Xerox, however, I would hardly call them ripped, due to their differences. Indeed if Tolkien's elves were "ripped" from Norse mythology then Warhammer's elves and D&D's elves were "ripped" from LotR and Warcraft's elves "ripped" from Warhammer and D&D and so on and so forth. However I think it is quite apparent that all of these, despite sharing the same name, are not the same race as they have many differences that make them distinct from the others even if they do have a number of similarities as well.
Regardless, the point I was trying to make is that while most fantasies do take inspiration from one another I would, in most cases, not classify it as ripping each other off. Ultimately, when writing fiction even the greatest writers need to take inspiration from somewhere (even Chris Metzen and friends!  ). Evidently I did a poor job of making my point in the first place.

So, It looks to me like most people here would like to join only when they can choose the setting, am I right? I understand this. But:
1. I still think it could give problems with the judging.
2. I guess the contest will only have one "round" then...or would many of you have two or more setting syou'd like to create?
3. I have to confess I'd like to see how some of the settings in my list would be worked out by you
What about a compromise: Either I'll give three settings or so to choice every round, and you choose one of them, or I give a majorous task, for example: "Use a "high fantasy" book as setting." OR "USe a setting where guns are allready developed at least somewhere" OR "use a historical setting". WHat do you guys think?

Hmm, I've never read one of Feist's book, so I'd have to work out the setting to myself, before I could judge your game^^ But why not...if there will be no other restrictions, you can use Feist^^

Nice idea, but remember it should still be HoMM-based, i.e.: round-based gameplay, adventure&battle map, Heroes&Armies, Towns...so it should probably more be "Heroes of Warcraft"
So then...your major task for the next weeks is to create a heroes from a high fantasy setting. So this leaves you to nearly anything you want (but remember: it must be a fictional setting, may not take place on our earth and I need to be able to get information on the setting, or I cannot judge it!!!)
Deadline is 20th of October. If you need more time, claim it!

I would like some extra time, if everyone agrees, since I can't even get my head around in indtroducing all factions in a quick way, so I would like a slightly longer wait.
by the way, xerox, I challenge you to beat me, especially in the lore (shouldn't be too hard)

I understand this...so here I ask again: would someone still like to join this - there were several of you who showed interest, so I'm surprised that it is THAT quiet now, here...and remember the finding harmony contests is finishing right now, perhaps that opens a gap?...I could of course give all of you more time...

Warhammer Lizardmen/Skaven would make for good factions IMO.
Warhammer Dark Elves are practically implemented into the game already, too, so we know it works.

The Finding harmony town competition has, as far as I understood is, ended now (the last contest was said to be the final one) and I decided this could be a chance to find out wether there is still, or again, or now firstly, interest on this contest, or a modified version of it (maybe just faction-creating, for this seems to be more popular). What do you say?
