Also another reason is that there are a lot of members Ash, it's not like it's only 4KB once and that's it. It's not only about memory, but also uploading/downloading, since multiple images need to be downloaded multiple times.
Then again if it's after a postless year this is less likely to happen (unless resurrected or members just, for example, want to use my "reserved" avatar as their custom avvie).

Maybe you can get it the other way, like, making it one pixel wider/thinner/higher to make it different and reuploading it as new avatar

Why do it when you can just ask Val in that avatar-upload thread to un-reserve it instead of asking him to upload another one? It does not require any more effort at all.
