I don't see the need to reserve two or more avatars. If you don't use an avatar that means you don't need it anymore and if someone takes an avatar tied to a specific member in everyone's mind we can always start a petition for him to change it. Worked in the past.

Off topic: JapanGamer, I like your current avvie, it was the first avatar I saw you with and I still associate with Celfious.

I am willing to bet 50% of reserved avatars are reserved by people who have not posted in a year and more than likely never will again.

I dont know about reserving multiple avatars either lol.

I do also agree with the points JapanGamer has made, not that I would really benefit from it. But having an avatar reserved by a presence that's not really there does seem a little silly.

And as far as the multiple avatar reservations go, I don't see a great need for that. Though, maybe having one reserved, and use a different one for something, like a holiday, might be nice. But it's not needed, and may be more of a headache than it's worth.

I think having multiple reservations should only apply to your own custom avatars, and not to the other ones that we have here such as the HOMM avatars.

Agreed, but it might be abused

You know, upload 1 every year just to have a lot to choose from you know (I would probably do that )

There are uses to have more than 1 avvie reserved.
I can't agree with Geny. Let's say that, next year, I'll upload another custom avvie. After a while, I get bored of it and I want to return to the previous custom avatar, but I can't because somebody reserved it.

If I can keep the old and the new custom avatars reserved, I can switch them any time.

I already tought how to implement this:

In the profile editting form, there should be added two new buttons: Set Ownership and Reserve Owned Avatars.

The first button will require Val's pass, so only he can set ownerships. After Val uploads a custom avatar for a memebr, he enters the respective member's editting profile form. Using the button, he will chose the custom avvie from the avatar list and set it as 'Owned by [member's name]'.

The second button will be used by the member: no pass required, except his own pass to have acces in the profile editting form, ofc. Here, he can chose which of the owned avatars he wants to reserve, and thus he will be able to have more than 1 avatar reserved in the same time. The reservation can be disabled at any time by the memeber, but the ownership can be removed only by Val.

If the member choses not to reserve a custom avatar, any other member can take it/reserve it without any problems.

Ofc, a member can reserve the current avatar (wheter it is owned or not), besied the owned ones.

I hope my explanation wasn't confusing.

I think the best solution would be the ability to upload own avvies for the users with some QPs by themselves. This has been proposed elsewhere already.

That's what Zamfir said

Of course it would be silly to reserve multiple "default" avatars

Not for custom uploaded avatars though.

Like if someone starts going around using Daddy's avatar or Leo it'll just be weird.

I agree with Radar's post. I too have seen that suggested somewhere else, and think it would be great.

Yes, it has been suggested by you

Ok now I don't think it's a bad idea at all, but I'm not sure Val would want it though.

I have such a bad short memory lol.

I wouldn't see any problem with it though. It sure would solve a lot of problems and things that other people have suggested.

I proposed entering a URL for the img, even got a qp, then 2 years later it was taken away lol (I don't care really)

A: I think its hard to manually implement with size limitations and what not.
B: Unsaid forum harassers would have to much fun with being able to post profane or just wrong images.

You could always copy the jpg of the avatar and then ask for it to be uploaded as your custom one. Maybe Val wouldn't notice it already being taken.

In this case, why don't you just ask Val to drop the reservation instead of uploading it again?

The point of this thread was to make this automatically after a postless year, instead of asking Val to do it.

Yeah and use twice as much memory on the server for each custom avvie people want un-reserved?

(why would the 4 KB limit exist if it weren't significant? )

It's not for the memory of the server

Val said that this limit is for downloading times when viewing a thread and the avatars in it (for people with slow connections)

I quote Val:
Quote:
As of 2008, the custom avatar file size limit is increased to 4kb. Connections are faster these days and we have a dedicated server, so extra quality in avatars can be afforded without any noticeable loss.
So the 2 KB limit was because of slow connections.

Now it raised to 4 KB because connections are faster.

And you would be surprised how many have slow connections - especially Americans (for some reason)

Omega had Dial-up, ByteBandit (at CH) has (had?) dial-up as well, etc
