damaging castles

a new idea is, that instead of totally destroying castles (which was mentioned in one of the earlier threads) when a hero attacks a castle, damage could be done to the castle itself.. not neccesarily destroying the castle, but making the hero who ends up winning the castle having to rebuild certain structures that were destroyed during the battle depending on how much damage was done to the castle..

this would certainly make it more interesting, and harder for the hero who wins the battle as he/she will still have to rebuild the castle...

Yes,maSTERgeNiE.I have mentioned this in the thread too.As in Masters of Magic, structures get destroyed after a battle.I think that this feature ought to be introduced to H4.The length of the battles should decide the severity of the devastation of the seige.

Yea and No !
It wouls have been interesting to have to build up some parts, but where should the limit go? Should we have to build up walls? or....
Lets not make the game like the screwed up game Age of Empires and all of those games whom are very much alike. Heroes of Might and Magic is a completely diffrent draft, and I say let us keep it that way !!

Maybe only reparing walls and turrets which will otherwise stay damaged for the next battles.

mistaken

uhh.. I think that you've all misunderstood my idea just a little bit..

what i meant was that a castle has a fixed number of hitpoints and when the balistas strike the walls, it also reduces a certain amount of hit points.. at the end of the battle, the number of hitpoints lost will result in certain buildings being lost...

of course this means the longer the battle goes, more damage is done to the castle structures..

the castle itself can never actually be destroyed... just buildings within the castle..

I see

well okey I understand your meaning. But I do not agree with you. It may have worked with just walls and turrets, but not with the buildings inside. NO! Bad idea !!

And Age of Empires, fun the first and second time I played it, but all the stocks are so simular that the fun of the game just....there is no fun when you have played it more than once, but since this is a homm IV discussion.
-I definitly not agree with damaging the buildings within !!

No, we shouldn't.
A smart town designer will put all the buildings far from the defending walls. Notice that most of the siege battle goes on outside city walls, so the attacker doesn't get to destroy buildings.

This is how it works in other games like Civilization: When you attack a city, for each attack you launch, there is a chance of something being destroyed. Thus, if defender has only small army, only a few buildings will be destroyed (albeit always religious buildings, which might transfer into economical buildings here!?), whereas if defender has huge army, city is generally left completely in ruins.

I think it could be introduced to the game, but it would have significant impact on the gameplay. This would definitely favor an aggressive play style even more than is currently the case.

Nope!

That will kill all the realizm of sieges...
As you have probably seen hero attacks only front gate and ONLY A PART of wall around it, and wall is all around the castle...
Anyway Catapult attacks WALLS ONLY, not all the structures in the town...
Stupid idea, IMHO.

The catapult does attack the arrow towers and whatnot...

Here's a thought: When you attack a castle, you don't attack from the front, you can attack from any angle.  whatever angle you attack from you will come up against that particular part.  (i'm not explaining well)

Ylthin attacks Haventown01 from the west.

As seen here, the west is predominantly huts and houses.  The 15x15 battlefeild has several (5 - 7) peasent houses in it.  At various invervals through the battle, civilians will burst from their homes and attack a creature if it is adjacent to their cabins/huts/houses.  The game will select a random recource.
-Ore: People attack with a hammer, which has a 20% chance for bash.
-Wood: The people will attack with brooms, clubs, and other wooden impliments. 10% chance to wound.
-Crystal: Magic Damage is dealt, with a 15% chance to cast slow or weakness. (both have a 7.5% chance)
-Gems: The Gems are used in a destructive ritual.  15% chance to cast Eldritch Arrow or Stone Spikes
-Sulphur: Fires are started on enemies, with a 15% chance to burn.
-Mercury: Mercury is used in a special formula that produces an odd, greenish cloud, that makes the effected unit loose 30% of its initative.

Enemies do retaliate.  Each hut has 500 hit points, but if it is all worn down the hut collapses.  (Huts have 20~30 people(civilians:skeletons) in them, for necromancer's purposes)  Huts can also catch on fire, be blinded, frozen, bound, plagued, blasted, or hit by lightning.

Ylthin's army is considerably worn down by the oposing town, but eventually she breaks through the wall, and defeats the creatures guarding the town.  She moves into the inner part of the town.

In the inner part of the town, the same rules as above apply (however, there are 7 - 9 huts.)  The combat takes place in a 30x30 radius with enemies defending it. Depending on the angle various buildings can be attacked.  Since Ylthin invaded from the west, among other buildings the Tavern and the Mage Guild are present.  Tavern means the huts and the defending units have higher morale.  Mage guild means enemies can come under fire from spells in the mage guild.  (Highest level build dictates what will be cast)  Mage Guilds can also cast Light Magic spells on friendlies.  Buildings can be attacked and destroyed, but it works sucessively: if a level 4 Mage Guild goes down, the player will have to work on the Level 3 Mage guild's destruction next.

Things would change depending on the castle being invaded.
the second (inner city) level would be different for different cities:
-Sylvan: there would be a lot of bridges involved, as well as boats.
-Inferno: There would be two levels, with the second one giving all creatures in it the danger of a Lava Explosion.
-Fortess: Players would have to work their way down from the top, down the many ladders, and through the fires.
-Necropolis: Players could make towers fall over, leading to damage and obstacles.
-Acadamy: Players would be on slowly revolving sky chunk floaty things.  This means there would be an element of chance about where units would end up.
-Dungeon: Players would again have to go downwards.
-Haven is very flat, with a moat.

Sounds like a more complex version of Age of Wonders.
While the idea is interesting, I'm afraid it's a bit complicated.
Remember, Heroes was always about simplicity, that's one of the reason it's such a hit - you can be a successful tactician without taking small details into consideration.
With all the hostile buildings the battles might have too many factors that influence it.

It could be a toggleable mode, like fast combat.  You can play normally, or if you want some challange, you can play complexly.

Yes, we should.

Who says the buildings are destroyed during the siege? I'd say the attacker destroys them after the succesful siege, when he enters the city

kinda stupid that the attacker cant destroy a bunch of peasant huts at his will.

And why would he do that? From now on these peasants will pay him taxes, will strenghten his army, will defend the town for him.
Why should he harm them?
