I think the odds of this happening are extremely thin.
And keep in mind that IF it happens, it's probably because it's cheaper. If Microsoft pursues this, they will most likely test market it with businesses. And if businesses do it, it's because they think it will save them money.

If it will remain as an option then it's ok, for some people even better than to purchase a fully-priced PC (could've bought in rates as well, meh) but if not - It's time to get accustomed with Linux then.
No crashes? Sounds tempting

*sig* You pay for internett and electricty, a $100 laptop i more than functional last time i checked.
Using the OS is a completely different issue. Glad i already got my debian loaded
And 50% in what? Over time pay once and use infinetiv is more effective.

I 'like' how they "justify" this decision: that some poor families can't afford to buy a PC since it costs a lot (but only one-time)... like you can't pay in rates (or whatever it's called in English, you know when you buy over a period of time instead of instantly)

I just love how people (don't) read my posts
Yeah, the reasoning is weak, but every reasoning that is made after the decision has been made is weak. You need something (anything actually) to justify yourself and make people less oriented in the topic buy it (first the cheap reasoning, then the product)
I believe that's one of the basics in marketing (if not the sole purpose that is)

Yeah, but, still, this is complete and utter idiocy. For many reasons, mostly because you can block updates or delete the ones you don't want to. Thus, that system can't be implemented on older Windows (up to Vista), meaning it would be only possible on Windows 7. Which would mean nobody in the world would buy it, especially since XP is pretty stable for a Microsoft system and everything works on it, as for now.
They can't be THAT stupid.

#Doomforge: Hey they made Vista, and the UAC is made to break applications litteraly. They use glue to attempt coving holes instead of properly fixing it.
Win7 is actually microsofts hope, lets hope they mess it completely up.

I have read somewhere that the performance and speed is their most important target for Windows 7. I guess they learned the lesson from Vista after all So far it has been tested successfully and is pretty fast, but that test was without drivers and other startup programs, and we all know those are the main cause of the OS slowdown. They're still trying to make it faster though (probably while still keeping Vista's stability)
But if they implement that pay-as-you-use feature, it will be a much bigger failure than Vista was, which is a pity considering they're at least on the right track now.

That's the key word here
They are well aware of that.
Remember, it was Microsoft who officially classified MS-DOS as their "enemy" and tried to get rid of people who used it (and DOS was THEIR product!)

Keyword is "Them", not "us".
And I think if Microsoft went to go through with this it would trigger a nice rush in penguin users.
I'm about to get a new PC, but I'd be damned if I'm getting vista or higher on it. XP works just fine still.
