uh, no... they were very helpful...
Didn't the elves capture the dwarves and were going to kill them and bilbo saved the day by putting the dwarves in barrels and floating them down the river, thus saving the dwarves from the elves and later the elves fought in the battle of five armies after bilbo beat the dragon?
(Wow, that was one long question. You been watching jeopardy too much.)

Ill say this much: I thought the movie was one awesome set after another. It was relatively faithful to the book (or at least as much as it needed to be). Problem was, my attention span just couldn't hold up to a three-hour movie. I got bored buring the Moria mines bit.
Speaking of, here's a question: how would you rate Frodo's yell after *** meets the abyss on the "Mark Hamill learns Vader is his father" scale?

The Orcs we're great, love how they made the white hand of Saruman look good.
I liked what they did with Arwen, it made the story flow better and all but the most fanatic purists (My wife) will get more out of her bigger part.
The sets we're really good and made the middle earth seem real.
The one problem that I had was that Merry and Pippen we're made out to be more buffonish than they are in the books. I know the need for comic relief but it could have still been funny with out all the accidental goofs thay did in the movie.

I'm rerading "fellowship of the rings" (but this time in english, not bulgarian). And I've noticed that Bilbo after the party goes out to his last journey, not alone but with three other dwarves (dwarfs) - it's not big of a deal - just noticed it!

Impressive, really impressive
Yes, I'm just waiting to see the movie again, and I'll probably see them three or four times before it will be out of the cinemas. I liked it a lot. Even being a hardcore fan of Tolkien (maybe in the range of Oldtimer's wife, although I'm not going to learn any of the elvish dialects...), I think the good points overwhelm the bad ones. As the book, it left me with a great sense of wonder, adventure, and drama.
For instance: (SPOILER WARNING - DON'T GO AHEAD IF YOU PLAN TO READ THE BOOK OR SEE THE MOVIE)
BAD POINTS:
- As you said, Oldtimer, Merry and Pippin have that unnecessary comic focus. That was the most annoying thing for me. They are treated like childs, and they aren't childs. They're the hobbit equivalent of a 20-25 years old human: young but with a little quantity of common sense. And of course they don't try to steal some of Gandalf fireworks. A hobbit child does it in the book.
- The first middle of the book is seriously cut. They arrive to Bree almost instantaneously!! I would be perfect for me if Peter Jackson would have dedicated fifteen minutes more of film, only to show the Barrow Mounds people (it could have looked scary, showing that Sauron hasn't the monopoly of terror), the hobbits getting their swords there and Tom Bombadil rescuing them. But I understand that, for commercial reasons, they have focused on the second part of the book. Since they get to Rivendel, the adaptation is almost perfect.
- I was afraid of the role of Liv Tyler, playing an action-woman Arwen. My fear was unjustified. If I remember well is a male elf named Glorfindel who helps Frodo to escape from the Ring Wraiths, but this was a minor change for me. Now I'm afraid of Liv Tyler doing SOMETHING on the second part. Maybe taking part ot the Eowyn character??
GOOD POINTS:
- The cast. Very appropiate. Specially for Frodo, Gandalf, Aragorn, Saruman... AND GALADRIEL. Oh, yeah! That's an elf queen in her full glory: mysterious, dangerous, powerful but noble... She really matched what I have on my mind after three readings of the trilogy.
- All the artistic design is FANTASTIC. The hobbit hole of Bilbo, the Mines of Moria, the Bridge of Kazhad-Dhum, the Caradhras mountain, the Ring Riders, Barad-Dur... Excellent.
- Oh, the Balrog!! Another great, great point. I only missing Gandalf scared and mumbling "Oh, no. A Balrog. They have a Balrog, and I'm sooo tired" (this is a free translation from the spanish version)
- The short summary about the life of the One Ring, shown in the beginning of the film.
- The short, shadow-like appartition of Gollum, probably the star of the third film
- Gandalf's fireworks, exceeding all the limits with the dragon and the nuclear bomb :-)
- Finally, I really laughed when Gandalf is smoking and lauch that pirate galleon made of smoke, instead of the fast smokering it should have launched. I thought "well, this is a movie and must demonstrate it.."
Well, it's enough for today. I could go on and on, but I don't want to provoke Wesley's anger (joking, of course). At least, this is not a LOTR forum, and there are weird people that don't enjoy this high adventure. Some unbelievers :-)

I haven't watched the film yet but if they don't get their swords from the barrow mounds then Merry's sword won't have the spells for the bane of the witch king of Angmar on it and won't help Eowyn kill him. After all "No other blade, not though mightier hands had wielded it, would have dealt that foe a wound so bitter, cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his unseen sinews to his will."

Whaaat? Tom is out of the film?
I didn't see the film (but I am a spoiler reader).
How could you claim that the film is by the book since Tom is out? The concept about Tom was my favourite. HE IS A SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE BOOK. HE IS THE UNTOUCHABLE. the power beyound all the powers.
I have the film home (don't ask how). But I will not see it until it is released here, because I want the big screen and the atmosphere first.
Are there any poems in the film?
Or elf songs?

Actually, there were many differences between the movie and the book. I wouldn`t call it faithful to the book.
And for Elves killing Dwarwes.....
How long it was when you last time read the Hobbit, Oldtimer?
I think Uruk-Hai were too big. And weren`t they the half-breeds of the orcs and humans?
I was a little disappointed but it was a good movie. Maybe I just spoiled it watching the trailers first.

*WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD*
For a movie adaptation, it's pretty faithful to the book. Compare it to, say, Harry Potter (which I thought was missing a lot of what made the book entertaining), and I'm quite happy with the results.
The main changes:
1) Radagast's minor role (in luring Gandalf to Isengard) is cut. I actually like it better this way, since Gandalf has to send help on his own instead of hoping Radagast has carried out his instructions.
2) Arwen's expanded role. This doesn't bother me much, since people who haven't read the books have to have some reason to care about her character (after all, she becomes Queen later), and Glorfindel takes no part in the other books.
3) The Old Forest, and Tom, have been cut. I would have liked to see them, but Tom would confuse the heck out of anyone who hasn't read the book, and including the Old Forest would have made the movie 4 hours long (not that I would have minded, but the general public isn't going to be interested in sitting that long). It does bring up the trouble of the sword destroying the leader of the Nazgūl, but that's easily explained away - maybe Aragorn gave them elven-swords.
On the whole, the changes were necessary to avoid confusing people who hadn't read the book or to keep the movie from being too long (some people I know have complained about it being 3 hours long), and they don't change the major plot any, just removing or altering a couple of minor details (how they get to Bree is not all that important in the grand scheme of things, so long as they get there).

AARGGHH!
You're all wrong! WRONG, I tell ya!
Yeah, the movie was good, but it had serious flaws.
Here are some:
LIV TYLER
Glorfindel was missing (And StormWarning: WRONG! ERR!! Glorfindel appears in the third book when the elves come to Minas Tirith, and he is an elven lord! I want Glorfindel!
LIV TYLER
Tom Bombadil was missing (I'd gladly sit through one extra hour to see Tom and his missus (not sure what her original name is)), and the Barrow Mounds were missing, in fact, the whole Old Forest (is that correct? I haven't read the original version yet (yes, shame on me, but to my defense, I want to fully master the english language before I read it, to get the most out of the masterpiece and make sure I don't miss a thing))
LIV TYLER
I didn't much appreciate the Sam character. He doesn't look the part. Too much attitude and not enough humility and faithfulness.
LIV TYLER
The Aragorn charcter. I mean, he pulls it off well enough, but Aragorn does not have that squeaky helium-sounding voice!
LIV TYLER
Radagast the brown was missing! I liked him. What's the point in taking him away?
LIV TYLER
An actress bereft of talent, but because of her superstar status, they change the course of the books! I wonder how they were reasoning: "Granted it's the bestselling novel EVER, but I think I have an idea or two of how we can improve it. I know, let's use Liv Tyler as Arwen, let her rescue Frodo instead of Glorfindel, give her some funny Hollywood lines, and then let her CRY over Frodo, five minutes after she met him for the first time (yeah, cause elves cry alot, don't they?). AARGGH Because of Liv Tyler, I now hate Arwen!
Now, about that Meri and Pippin thing, I reacted a bit like you guys at first, but then I read the book again, and discovered that they are in fact cheerful fellows, Tolkien even mentions Meri's unbreakable mood. They had humour, you know, even in Midgard.
And to those of you that argue that "it would be confusing to those who haven't read the book(s)", shove it! In my opinion, you shouldn't be allowed in to the theater without having read the book at least once first!
And oh yeah, I almost forgot, LIV TYLER!!!!

aw.. c'mon DonGio...
yeah sure, i'd love to see a movie closer to the original and yes, all should read Tolkien's books (even if they are never going ot see hte movie] but in that casde, the movie would be nine hours long and it would be naive to think the budget could be balanced by the tickets...
as for Arwen ...errr, Liv Tyler... for her standards that WAS acting... it is the best performance I have seen so far
