Are you serious? You think every other forum which has no QPs is total chaos? There's always the silencing or ban option for the total lame spammers.

No I meant if we decided against having no QP's or flood report.
Back then we had no flood report & new comers would abuse their freedom by spamming the heck out of the boards & making it crazy.

It is fine the way it is.

In short: First of all, I am favoring the +QP/-QP system; no question about it. As Doomforge said, this makes this forum unique. Moreover, I don't mind the idea that mods have extra power on setting the floodprotect on new members with 0 QPs (i.e. 2 red stars) only. This would encourage promising people to post more and hopefully stick around easier and contribute more. This also resolves the problem that Aculias mentioned.

Some details/random thoughts: We have such a good time here most of the time, that we might forget that this is Val's playground. I will quote the code of conduct regarding floodprotect:
Quote:
At Heroes Community we encourage thoughtful discussion. We discourage flooding (posting many posts in a short period of time) and unmeaningful conversations. There is an Instant Messaging and E-mail systems at Heroes Community for unmeaningful conversations. We encourage you to make your posts interesting so that everyone can have a good time reading them. ...
Moreover, a forum with a flavor of "heroes" is meant to attract many young people and I believe this is the reason for floodprotect; i.e. try to discourage spamming, childish behavior, and more or less help mods doing their jobs (think again if you would actually like to take such a responsibility and devote such a large portion of your free-time; then say "thanks" that they exist).

As of the QPs, it's unique, fits-in nicely with the concept of "heroes", and also reflects each user's contribution to the community. To me it is clear that not everybody contributes the same; the red stars are there just to indicate that (yes, in a subjective way). On the other hand, I believe that most of the people with many QPs didn't gain them because that was their primary goal. Think about it and think about how QPs are actually awarded. What usually matters is what you actually want to say or if you had a good idea aiming to increase the "fun" of this community (e.g. a game). And none of these two cases has as primary aim to gain a QP; at least I fail to see how this is possible.

Now, when -QPs have to be awarded it can be delicate. Clearly the mods don't want to be in this situation, but they have to compromise between all sorts of different things; adult-adult conversation, adult-child conversation, child-child conversation, conversation between people with different background (i.e. what might be offensive for someone, might not be offensive for another one), and so on. So, like Father suggested, in kind of blurry situations (no clear breach of CoC), some more communication before the -QP might be appropriate to take place. Even though this will not resolve the problem entirely (because a "member" logs-in at will and doesn't check HCM daily), it can help.

May be I have to add more, but more or less this is it for me.
And "thank you" mods.

Well, how do all other forums on the planet Earth function? We probably are going to give warnings and silance/ban after few. No problem at all.

Yup it was nitpicked

Two points

1: As we stand right now the problem is evident. Ignoring it will do nothing so we must either get members to agree with mods more or change how bonus's work.

The former is near impossible as some people are trolls or rebels who just resist what they see as authority. some feel that they are owed something and others are just wiseguys (i didn't shoot him i just fired a bullet and he carelessly wandered in its path.)..

Like i said the community should be able to give a post a thumbs up or such assuming they can X posts and have been a member for a year. this allows members to show appreciation more easily. Keep qp's but add this.

This kills two birds with one stone. People don't need to needlessly spam and people can give their form of motivation to other posters.

And there is nothing to lose from this.

A troll would have to be pretty determined to wait a whole year and to post X times to give themselves an endless quantity of s which won't even be all too valued.

Most people who get qp's stick around for more than a year.

And it gives members who simply come for the community some seniority.

2:Unique isn't always a good thing. Although we are unique other forums run much more smoothly and no such drama happens there. Everyone there does good things because they are charitable. They simply help the community because they can. Not because they wanted more recognition. In some forums the mods are strict and in one i got banned on my first day (for guess what, posting "i agree" which is considered spam by some). however that is how those stricter forums operate. They don't get flooded by spam because they discourage so many newcomers.

It may just be because I'm bitter from my heated debate against myself but i think these are pretty valid points.

There is nothing to ignore, all you have to is accept what you get Community thumbs up is another version of biased popularity votes and therefore bad. Quality is subjective sure but not subject to everyone's opinion for numerous reasons. We don't have democracy here, we are nazis! As for the troll argument I can think of one fellow that keeps coming back for weeks now. Guess who he is and you get a free cookie He's not the first or the last but at least older ones have taken a break for now.

Now we are just talking semantics Mr. miles

The problem is that these things keep happening. This wasn't the first and by all means it isn't the last time qp dramatica was on.

Yeah but we still judge members by their posts. this is only adding an actual icon to what already exists.

I keep saying it over & over that it will cause problems to vote who's post is good or bad.
Like for example Asheera, we know she is loved by most.Any thread she makes would get an automatic thumbs up.
While others would get no thumbs or a thumbs down.
This is based on favortism.

I say we keep it to ourselves if we think the thread is great or not.
Sure you can mention how good it is. Voting would make it worst.
Especially if QP's was involved in it.

I knew a thread about QP's with Aculias' name as a poster would have the word favouritism thrown in there at least once *grin*

That's too funny

About QP's, I do not like them. I do not feel like its a fair system at all. I dislike that by not giving a post a QP it's like saying I don't think its worthy, and I dislike that by giving a QP its as if I am somehow saying that this post is superior to others like it.

Most of all, I don't like what QP's do to the members. Not all members of course, but to some it ruins my perception of them completely.

Over the years we've likened the Shinies to the One Ring - and its sooooo true lol Maybe at first those people seem to handle it, but every once in a while, one of them will turn into gollum on us - going crazy rating threads, spamming everywhere, making tons of fake accounts etc.

Naturally this isn't everyone, or even most - and in a lot of cases the frenzy ends after they are threatened a few times with losing a shiney, but the point is that nowadays some of the effort certain people make gets dropped in favour of a more negative approach once they finally get that status they wanted.

I also dislike that if I see a member contributing in a positive way, my only option to get rid of their floodprotect would be to give them a bunch of qp's. That's not how the system is designed, and its not an accurate reflection - but at the same time, it bothers me that people who could be a big part of improving things here have to deal with limitations.

I could write more, but I won't - maybe later

If the mods were perfect, I would retain the current system. However, as things are, I would suggest a different solution.

First, what benefits do QPs give? Removal of the post limit and then floodprotect. But why do we have a post limit and floodprotect? Because some members, if not limited, would post things that would decrease HC's quality. But why actually does this? Obviously, it's not members who care about HC - at least not in a positive way.

However, posters with an investment (of time and/or effort) in HC would not want to see it go down the drain - and you don't have to have QPs to have an investment. Thus, my suggestion would be to remove the previously mentioned restriction for members that have invested time and posts in HC. For example (and the numbers can be adjusted), if a member has a hundred posts and has been a member for a month, then he/she has the post limit removed.

The only question would be how penalties would be handled. I have some ideas, but I'm open to suggestions.

Just an idea, but what if QPs were invisible? Takes away the status aspect of the red stars (those who brag about forfeit that QP, of course ) while retaining the bonuses and penalties associated with it. We could send an HCM telling someone they've gotten a QP, and each member can see his or her respective bonuses but no one else's. Even that's a bit much, though, in my opinion.

I still think it's a bit ridiculous we have to do anything at all. Perhaps we're jumping the gun a bit here? After all, this is probably the first widescale QP discussion that I can remember, so why can't we talk about improving rather than scrapping a system that sets us apart from other boards?

I know it can be a headache sometimes to deal with, but we moderators took this job for better or worse. I mean no offense by this at all, Pan, but perhaps you've taken on a bit too much responsibility around here. Especially if you really think people hate you. If anything, you're the most liked person in HC. The rest of you I know have your share of disdain for this type of controversy, but I don't think scrapping the QP system will really help in the long run. There'll always be something to fight with the members about, after all.

And you members have to meet us halfway on this, because it's obvious the system as it stands is flawed because of all the conflict it breeds. Don't take this stuff so seriously. It's an online message board, and while I know the internet is SIRIOUS business, I really don't think an extra .gif by your name means enough to jeopordize the whole 'community' aspect of the Heroes Community.

So yeah, that's my two cents.

I'm not sure if I want to post this, but here goes.

It seems that the overwhelming majority of people want to keep QPs, but at the same time they whine and complain and talk about QPs that are given or not given

So what's with all the "overs"?

Scroll back and look again.  That's ONE TENTH the number of posts at HC that contain "QP".  And people wonder why some mods get sick and tired of hearing about QPs?  Do people really think the mods LIKE reading all those thousands of posts about QPs?

People go on and on for pages about a single QP!  Personally I'd say get rid of the damn things to save all the controversy.  But if people want them, they need to accept that's it's not a perfect system and stop placing so much importance on them.

If people want QPs, there are going to be inconsistencies, unfairness, personal whims and preferences of the mods.  And they'll even be affected by how much the mod had to drink or how good/bad last night's sex was.  If people want QPs they have to accept these type of things, because they can't have it both ways.

It only takes a few days at HC to realize that the number of stars by someone's name has very little to do with how good of a poster they are, or if they know what they are talking about.  And it doesn't take long to realize that it does almost nothing toward the stated purpose to "shift the focus away from gaining stars through quantity of posts to gaining stars through quality of posts".  It's kind of ironic.  The purpose of the red stars is to encourage quality posts, but someone who's encouraged by them is called a QP hunter.  Go figure.
