Ultima is a crpg too. And a hack'n'slash or dungeoncrawl is a game where you mainly fight with monsters and explore deep dungeons.

Definition...
Almost every RPG has something to say what RPGs are.
Characters in RPG's don't have to be weak at the beginning.
Most common misunderstanding about rpg's is that every game where character develops stats or skills is roleplaying game. This isn't true at all.
Example Diablo in my eyes will never be rpg game. It may have some elements of rpg but it's truly hack'n'slash game.

Well, without considering the fact that "hack'n'slash" was mentioned..
How many game's do you know of that have:
A: character's/NPC's
B: Statistic's/XP's
C: essence of magic
D: something that must be conquered (evil guy, labryinth, ect) in the end,
:and isn't an RPG.
Yet still the question remain's.

Unfortunately it means only that which it conjurs up in your head. As has been stated before it stands for role playing game. Personally I would include all the goings on in the "asylum" thread into the rpg category.
ps I know (assume) you didn't really want answers but I'm kindda bored.

Well the Diablo's I suppose are considered RPG's but the story is rather weak, when I played diablo 2 I played it for the sheer enjoyment of bashing people with stuff, not to enjoy the story which is Identical to diablo one, only their are 3 of them this time. Also this is a relevant topic because quite frankly not a great deal of rpg's make it to the pc, i have no idea why that is but rpgs always seem to succeed better on console. But today's rpg's are lacking what the oldies have. I have played all the new final fantasy's and they SUCK ASS!!!! Even now i still find myself getting an snes emulator and playing the same rpg's over and over again, over a several year period mind you. But snes has the best rpgs ever, Final Fantasy III and Chrono Trigger battle for first, while Secret of Evermore and Lufia 2 battle it out for second. If anybody knows about these SNES games and has played them through then back me up before they all think i'm crazy!!!!
