The Ranger known as Winterfate stumbled out of the portal. He couldn't remember anything that had happened before that moment, but he knew that he had done something important.
"I feel so lost. Such a strange feeling of deja vu and I can't place it.", came the first words out of his mouth.
He quickly discovered that he could shapeshift into various animal forms, including that of a Spectral Wolf. The only thing he could remember was how he had met his animal companion, Shady. He also recalled the name of his very first companion, but couldn't remember much else.
He dusted himself off and noticed a bundle on the ground. It was filled with provisions and a map. The fact it was just sitting there gave him an all too familiar feel of dread.
He looked to his companion for answers, but got none. Whatever had wiped his mind clean had done the same to his companion.
"Well, I guess this amnesia will wear off someday. In the meantime though, I don't like how we got here. I say we move."
Shady barks in agreement, as Winterfate takes the map and follows it to his first destination...

As Winterfate made his way swiftly and silently through the forest, he hears the sound of a huge battle nearby to the west. However, he can feel a strange familiar presence to the east. A vague memory of the Arena surfaces and he knows it is far to the north, and a stray wonderful scent brings to mind a inn and a large woman with a smile and a rolling pin to the south.
Shady comes to a complete stop, looking up at Winterfate. Seems to be asking.."Ok, too many familiar things here, which way first?"

Winterfate looks at his animal companion and replies:
"Don't look at me. I'm just as confused as you are. Which way do you want to go, boy?"
The dog starts spinning around in circles for what seems to be an eternity, until suddenly he starts running towards the east.
Winterfate starts running after Shady and says:
"East it is. Maybe I'll find some answers with whoever is there."

As Winter makes his way east, the feeling grows stronger and stronger. Something, or somebody, familar to him is here. Close. He hears a voice. "Got er! My she is n fiesty one. Taint seen nothin like her. Recon she one of them familiar wot lost her mage?"
"Don matter. The boss said get flyin critters, we get flyin critters. She'n a flyin critter. Putt'er in the cage within the rest."
Behind a screen of foliage Winterfate can clearly see that there are at least 4 armed men. One is putting a bird into a cage with several other animals. The feeling is coming from here, but he is not sure exactly where.

Winterfate sees the men and whispers to Shady:
"We need to stop them. Animals are meant to live free, not in cages."
He then looks around and takes out his bow. He grasps it with the certainty that only a battle-hardened warrior can, which surprises him, for he doesn't remember ever fighting in any battles. He lets loose an arrow towards one of the men and quickly casts Summon Nature's Ally IV to summon a brown bear to attack the men and attempt to liberate the caged animals.

When one of their numbers drop like a ton of rocks ((they are thugs, not many 'hit points')) they draw their weapons. A split second later something with all teeth and claws, and something really large with all teeth and claws are on top of them. At first they make the mistake of trying to concentrate on the bear, but it is the wolf that is much more dangerous then the bear.
One swings at the animal just to find it is simply no longer there. Instead it is behind him snapping at his neck after jumping. As soon as something aims at it, it is simply elsewhere. Way too fast for them to get a strike in. With the bear swatting at them, they decide to try to get some range in. They start retreating to try to use bows or other range weapons against the creatures.

Winterfate smirks as he sees the change in tactics:
"Major mistake."
He casts Entangle behind the thugs, cutting off their quickest escape route.
((Oh how I missed RPing with this guy!  ))

To his amazement it is a lot more potent then it seems it should be. Not only are they not escaping, they are totally bound. The bear and Shady just start circling them. They are going nowhere, and are no longer a threat ((except maybe to themselves)).

Winterfate looks at the now stuck men and roars out:
"Why are you holding these animals captive?"
He readies his bow as if to illustrate what will happen if they don't answer.

Meanwhile a very familiar sound comes from the cage. Only .. it couldn't be...

Winterfate stares at the man in disbelief. That description of a man and a tower sounded familiar, for some reason. He couldn't quite place it. However, he heard a very familiar sound coming from the nearby cage...
"Fiya!"
Logic clashed at odds with emotions. How could she be alive? He saw her die back in...back in...
Ravenloft!
Winterfate clutches his head in pain and Shady whimpers as part of his lost memory returns to him. He can't remember WHY he was in Ravenloft, but it doesn't matter now.
He frees the animals from their cages and hugs Fiya in a loving embrace.
Shady quickly detects the newest addition to his master's empathic link. Winterfate then introduces Shady to Fiya and comments, smiling:
"How many Rangers have TWO animal companions?"
He looks back at the men and asks:
"What is his name?"

Winterfate frowns at the relevation and then looks at his companions, which give him conflicting opinions on what to do with the trapped thugs.
Fiya's compassion clashed with Shady's anger as Winterfate grinned, realizing that this was probably the reason why most were happy with just one companion.
After a few moments of deliberation, Winterfate looks back at the thugs and says:
"You can go, but if we ever cross paths again and I see you doing this again..."
He lets the statement trail off for emphasis, as he goes back to the cages to make sure he freed all of the animals, and heads off towards the west. He just had to find out who that tower person was...
((And yes, I realize they're still Entangled. Consider it an additional reminder of what could've happened.  ))

Winterfate made his way through the forest and soon a memory of "The Pass" came to his mind. The only walking passage from north to south (or vice versa) that was relitively safe ((compaired to mountainclimbing)). He was nearing it, and that meant there would probably be a lot of people there.
Then he heard the battle, but that could only mean that this battle was taking place near the pass. Which meant the tower would be near it, but he was CERTAIN there was no tower near the pass. As he cleared the forest he saw a huge battle taking place. Only..on one side a single figure, on the other a huge army. Catapults, mages, clerics, magical constructions, elementals, and thousands of soldiers versus but a single man.
As he stood there a huge boulder come crashing into the man, and splintered into a million peices. The man seem totally unphased, and continued walking forward. He was met by metal golems which tried to dismantle him or hold him back, but they were having as much luck as the boulders. The man calmly just ripped them apart and kept walking.
Even where he was from Winterfate heard a thunderous voice coming from the single individual. "I am VAIN, say my full name and I will obey!" and he is repeating this over and over. It looks like this .. man is going to destroy this whole entire army.

((Hmm I remember something like this. But I don't know his full name.  ))
Winterfate looked at the situation and asked his companions:
"Any ideas?"
Fiya suggested they wait it out and Shady remained silent. Winterfate prodded the wolf, who just barked lightly to represent his agreement with Fiya.
So, he waited for something, anything that could explain why this battle was going on in the first place.

Profeus quickly kneeled on the ground and bowed his head for The One True God had revealed himself before the gnome once again.
"RISE, PROFEUS STUFBLOWER, YOU ARE MY PROPHET AND THUS YOU MAY STAND IN MY PRESENCE."
"Thank you, my Master. It is a great honor to hear your voice once more."

And with that Profeus woke up. He was sitting in the middle of the forest, the remains of his lunch, including some mushroom leftovers, were lying around him. He stood up and stretched his little hands. He felt rejuvenated and as motivated as he could be. He quickly gathered his belongings and set forth to find the creature and bring glory to The One True God.

Malreth watched as the man leave.
"Lucky? More like smart. How did he think this whole scenario would go, against the three of us? All in his favor, all the time? He being the supreme being of...Oh, to more important matters now. Like, this thing to the south...And you."
Malreth picked up the faerie, taking notice of the wing.
"I suppose you are not hurt too badly? Or do we need to make a side journey to get you feeling better?"

She is barely big enough to fit in your palm. So small, yet so powerful.
