Quote: Most animals have different speices. Look at dogs, for instance.
Here's a few interesting things that many people don't know.
Dogs are the same species as wolves. All dogs can interbreed with all wolves and produce viable offspring. One of the current theories going around now is that dogs are a type of neonatic version of wolves, which is to say that many of the characteristics of adult dogs, like viciousness, are stunted, thus what we see in dogs are the characteristics of wolf puppies.
hmmm, I really didn't do that theory any justice, just google it if you want to learn more....
Polar bears are the same species as brown bears. I think we should create a genetic archive of the polar bears such that if they go extinct from global warming we can just bring them back if it ever gets cool again.

Quote: So we just have another skin pigment?
But they have other eyes and bigger mouths :S
One could say the same about differences in fur color with horses or the chimp to the baboon. Some where along the line, a certain group of individuals adapted to their surroundings and their cultural practices, inexorably resulting in their patterned traits visible today. Skin color is no more than the collagen in skin adapting to a long term exposure to stimulus, coded within the DNA after several generations, and made to be more of a trait than an special difference.
Yes, taxonomy is a human-made, and succintly artificial, device used for classification. But as is every other field of science, practical or theoretical, physical or relativistic. Take the Jarvik heart. It may be artificial, but that doesn't mean its inept or flawed.
Quote: Edit : And for the record, the premise of this thread is retarded wrapped in stupid wrapped in pathetic. I mean seriously, even the most racist racist who ever racisted his way through racistdom doesn't think that different ethnicities are in fact different species. It's the kind of question that you can only come up with if you have an extra chromosome or something
Well that was harsh! This is just a discussion by rebutting an fallacy come about by deductive reasoning. I see no reason to criticize him for setting a premise for discussion.

Dogs' intelligence is also compareable to that of Wolf Puppies. So are teeth. And behavior to an extent.
So to the topic itself.
NO. We are not different species.
Different breeds, races, subspecies or whatever we of course are.
Mediterraneans differ from scandinavians who differ from arabians who differ from mongolians etc. etc. etc.
As are different kinds of wolves, horses or moose for that matter.
WHy would humans be any different?

I meant breeds or "arter" when I said speices but it was late and I couldnt figure out the word.
For instance, there is the African Elephant and then there is the Indian Elephant. And then there is the white humans and the black humans (and the yellow humans)?

No. The species of genus "homo" are homo sapiens, homo erectus, homo habilis and so on.
Black, white, green, yellow, pink and purple-colored skin still means homo sapiens.
Elephants (family elephantidae) are either genus Loxodonta (african) or Elephas (indian). There are following species of genus Loxodonta and Elephas, but I don't remember those.
It goes like this: Domain->Kingdom->Phylum->Class->Order->Family->Genus->Species
As you see humans don't differ even at the "lowest" level (species).

That was irony, Sherlock. *winks*
Oh and we don't even differ in the subspecies taxon - black and white people are still the same homo sapiens sapiens.

Atleast I could clone my pet if it died. But it wouldnt be the same thing... a clone would feel so strange to how. It wouldnt feel real and alive. It would feel like it was made in an factory.

Oh please, the "I was just asking a question" is a classic way of being able to feign innocence. It's the Fox News method : "Obama a terrorist?" "Democrats cause cancer?" "Holocaust never happened?" What? Oh no! I was just asking the question, see, there's a question mark at the end. But I take your point. I will rephrase my response :
Is this thread completely and utterly idiotic? How do we KNOW that the opening poster wasn't dropped on his head several times? I'm just asking. Not stating.

Pleasantries No More
I liked the post about wolves from FriendofGunnar. That is actually worth looking into; also liked the post about polar bears. Polar bears aren't nearly as fascinating as wolves to me but still it does have merit.
With regard to races of 'people' my response is...
Why the hell are some people so stuck on the fact that Obama is black....rhetorical if you ask me. The man is just so young and inexperienced, that's what I think about him. I can't find a news broadcast anywhere that doesn't mention him being black in some way, and how significant that is. In fact that is the one reason I actually began taking an interest in the comedy channel t.v. show "Colbert Report" because his show seems to be the only one in existence that counters certain things about Obama's presidency without focusing on his race. They love making fun of people who focus on his race. I only wish I was aware of the campaign for his name to be on the spacestation. I would have added my vote in a heartbeat. If it weren't for so many otherwise serious news report broadcasts making such a big deal about Obama's skin color I would never have even considered watching the Colbert Report.
And what do you think this is doing to everyone else? Add to what I just said: After seeing what Ashton Kutcher just did with Twitter and CNN, I'd say it's clear a VERY LARGE percentage of people have all but completely lost faith in the news these days.

Quote: That's why taxonomy is an artificial construct.
???
It's a LABEL. Species are artificial, by that logic, so is DNA -- since in reality, we should speak about individual atoms and connections, not substances, which are labels to describe this! (the connections)
So everything is artificial, except if you talk about atoms. But then, even that is artificial! (Carbon, Oxygen, labels like these... are artificial, they have a certain configuration). Maybe we should say exactly how many electrons it has everytime, but even THAT is artificial too. I mean, when you say 'electron' you are, in fact, referring to the observable electrical forces most likely -- so 'electron' itself is just a label to describe that in our current physical models...
See how far you can go?

Pay more attention. The thread asked: Are they different species?
People say it's artificial how humans classify them.
I responded that species is artificial too. So it almost everything else.
I can see the off topic
