1280 resolution in windowed mode
Is it possible to run 1280x1024 resolution in windowed mode (i.e. non-full-screen)? Unchecking full screen doesn't make it not full screen.
My monitor is 1680x1050 so ideally I would prefer that, but since that's probably not possible, the next best would be to run 1280x1024 - but only in windowed mode so the image doesn't become stretched.

I think you have to make sure your screen is running in 16-bit colour mode. (That's how I recorded those HD Homm 4 town videos in my siggy. and also the Homm 1-3 ones) =D
Edit: Weird... my signature doesn't show up.
Okay, here.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't work even if the desktop is set at 16 bit.
The interesting thing is that 1027x768 works fine in windowed mode, but 1280x1024 forces me to go to fullscreen even if the fullscreen option is unchecked.

And you did mention that the screen is set above 1280x1024 right?

Yep. My desktop is 1680x1050, so 1280x1024 should fit inside it.

Hmm. Other than patching (or if you're patched, reinstalling to 1.0) I have no idea what is wrong.

Yeah it's got me stumped. Does 1280x1024 windowed work for you guys?
The biggest problem I've had with older games (in general) is getting the resolution to work with a widescreen monitor.

Very weird...
anyway, I've heard of a program called DXwind that lets you play games that won't play in windowed mode in a window (like Starcraft, Maple Story and a bunch of others). Maybe that will work?

That's an interesting idea. I tried it, but unfortunately it just crashes when doing windowed mode on that resolution. D3DWindower also crashes.

Hm... weird enough, the game will not play in windowed mode for me at that resolution either now.

Would a custom resolution of 1440x900 be possible?. Perhaps through a registry edit?.

Probably not without some hacks to the interface and game engine or something.
All the resolutions have hard coded interfaces. That is, the interface (especially the sidebar) looks different depending on whether yoru resolution is 1024, 800, or 1280.
