as you reach to snatch it, it disappears...

In HOMM 2 gold edition I get this message when I defeat a hero holding some ultimate artifact, such as the golden goose.  Why does this happen exactly?

The Ultimate artifacts can only be used by the player that uncovered them, if another player tries to get hold of them by defeating the hero it disappears.
