I'm back

Hi. After a 1 year break when I finally closed one of my major projects ( www.axonnsd.org/ASDClock ) I am back to work at a map that's been in work for YEARS now.

If you're wondering why is it YEARS, well it's because it's a story map. It has lots of story and it's also quite different in game style. Anyway, what I wrote this post for is:

1. To tell you I'm very happy that I see that there is still activity around here. I've been keeping an eye on the Forum for the past few months and I'm glad that there are still people who will play my map this year when it's finished (probably in 3 months).

2. To ask you the Seniors around here for an update to the List Of The Claimed for Heroes WoG. My map is WoG 3.58f, which as far as I know is the lastest version. But I want some of my scripts to be WoG 3.59 friendly because you may want to use them. I wrote some general functions which can be used by anybody.

3. I'm also working at a program to help debug ERM scripts at game run-time and at another program to better organize ERM scripts (sort of like an IDE for ERM). All my stuff will be Open Source, just like my ASD Clock ::- ).

Well, I'm a guy who's been working at a map since... forever ::- ). I started in 2005 and I just had so much stuff to do I haven't got around to finish it, but I'll never give up. I'll finish it someday. I'm just happy there are still some people out there who play WoG.

I just have to finish a Flash Game I'm working on now, and after that, it's 100% to Heroes 3 ::- D. I wish to finish the first map of my campaign this year!

First of all, I love Heroes. Secondly, I love WoG, it supports so much customization... thirdly, I'm a game designer and computer programmer, I've been programming since 1998. I love to create stuff ::- ). Last but not least, I promised too many people I will finish this map, so I will. I never back out on a promise.

Warmonger: I barely have time to cope with the stuff I already have in development. I just finished that ASD Clock of mine and Open Sourced it. Now I want to finish 2 tools for my Heroes 3 map.

gnollking: thanks mate, I need it (the luck ::- D ). You wouldn't happen to have a Ladybird in your possession eh? I'd use a +1 to Luck ::- D.

Gentledon: you'll see. It's a surprise ::- D. Just imagine that so far I got 230 KB of ERM written exclusively by me. And it's only 15% of what I'll have in the end. It's a lot of storyline, true, but there are also lots of other things - quests, custom battles and lots of stuff. My map is an Open-World adventure. You can finish it in countless ways, you can spend 300 turns doing all sorts of quests or you can go straight for the kill ::- ). It's not 100% set in stone yet, but that's the idea.

And that is why I need the 2 tools I'm working on. It's impossible to build a project of such magnitude with the ERM tools at my disposal. What I wrote is an ERM generator. As we all know ERM code is quite difficult to read. For example you have z15 or V12 but you don't know what that means when you look at the code. Except when you have tons of comments. And I do have tons of comments in my code but it's getting tiresome when you're working on a project which will ultimately involve probably 1 MB of ERM code. So I created an ERM generator. I hardly see any ERM. I just write the parameters and my program generates functions and ERM code ::- ).

I did this because my map uses some functions I made quite a lot.

Anyway, I abandoned the initial ERM code generator because it could be used just for a couple of functions.

Now I'm building something that will be able to generate ALL the ERM. Consider it like a layer of abstraction over the ERM. What you see on screen will be like this:

When Player visits The Blood Obelisk give him 2000 gold and "Player Visited Blood Obelisk" = true.

My generator will translate this into:

!?OB28/128/1;
!!UN..blabla give gold
!!IF:V28/1; [set flag to true]

Of course, in my program you will say what the Blood Obelisk is. You will have a place where you can define your map objects, give them custom name and simply map them to their map locations X/Y/Z. You will also map variables over flags. You will create a new Flag, say, Flag 28 like I said in the above example, but you will actually name it "Player Visited Blood Obelisk". And of course, all this makes the code really nice to read and work with.

And then there's a Generate ERM button and voila, you have your scripts, neatly split into 32 KB (because the Map Editor can't handle more than that and I link my scripts to the map from the Map Editor).

Hm. I wrote quite a bit, you must think that I'm crazy and I'm never going to finish all this ::- ). But I will. This month I do have to finish one Flash Game I'm working on and publish that too. Once I got this out of the way, I'll be back working at the map and tools.

Hmmmmmmm... what the hell... if I went this far with the details, let's go all the way. I'm going to give you everything. God knows I need some enthusiasm to carry on with the huge project I got myself into with this map.
