How to play HoMM : Quest for the DragonBone staff on your PC

A few days ago I stumbled upon HoMM : QftDS on ebay. I had never played the game before and I don't have a PS2, so I decided to grab a PS2 emulator and play it on my PC. I have an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, 4 GB RAM and an ATi Radeon 4850 but you can run it on a weaker system. Here's how you can play the game :

1. Get the game, of course (you'll find it on ebay on reasonable prices). You could get a used copy, because you'll have to make an image of the game's CD either way. Otherwise, it won't run smoothly.

2. Download PCSX2 0.9.6.

3. Configure PCSX2 like this:

a) Graphics - ZeroGS 0.97.1 (the other plugins have problems)

Select "Configure..." and experiment with the settings. I used the following settings :

- Interlace Enable
- Anti-Aliasing 4X
- Save Snapshots as BMP
- Fullscreen

Click on OK and test it after that (press "Test..."). It should be alright.

b) Sound - P.E.Op.S. SPU2 1.9.0

Don't forget to test it.

c) First Controller - SSSPSX PAD Plugin 1.7.0

Click on "Configure..." to set your buttons. I have a Logitech Chillstream Gamepad and I didn't use the keyboard.

d) Cdvdrom - Gigaherz's CDVD Plugin

Click on "Configure..." and select your drive (physical or virtual). I used a DTools virtual SCSI drive.

Leave Dev9, Usb and FireWire as they are.  The BIOS will be blank because you need a PS2 BIOS (which is copyrighted by Sony) and I'll not be posting any links here. You can, however, get one if you (or your friends) have a PS2. Here's a guide on how you can do that.

After you get the BIOS, copy it into the "bios" folder (C:\Pcsx2\bios, for example). I used a "Europe v02.00" bios.

4. Now all you have to do is to mount the game's CD image (making a copy of the game's CD and using it for yourself is not illegal) on the drive letter which was selected at step 3.d). Click File > Run CD/DVD and it should work. You could also check out this guide if you have any problems.

Enjoy the game!

Here's a video I made to show you a bit of gameplay and how the game would run (much smoother, actually).

This is excellent.  Thank you.  I badly needed something like this for the wiki.

Do you think it'd also work for the other MM PS games like Crusaders and Warriors?

Thanks.

Well, I could try out Warriors of M&M, but isn't Crusaders for the PC ?

The PC version was a sort of vague port. The PS one had a better plot, an ending movie and was generally different in about every way. I own it, but the disc won't read on my PC

I see. I found Warriors for PS2, but Crusaders is for PS1 and I'm trying to configure a PS1 emulator. I haven't found it yet either.

I've managed to play Warriors of M&M. Apparently, it can be emulated successfully. I don't have the time to get into it though.

As for the other one, I'm still searching for it. Btw, thanks for the QP.
