TV across the pond

this has started because of the fact I saw a trailer for the american version of "Life on Mars", which in the Uk was one of the most deservedly well celebrated TV shows of the last decade. And, Quite frankly, It looks rubbish!

What's wrong with showing the original version over there? huh? what, is the performances by John Simm and Phillip Gleinster just a bit too good for you? Was the whole context of the 70's in britain a bit too grim for you? what?!

Why do shows need to go through the stupid localisation when they go either way across the pond? Why do we need to have american versions of Red Dwarf and the Office? Why do we need to see rubbish british remakes of american shows? It's a waste of time and money, in which we could be making more useful shows... Like a show about...erm...a cockney...fez wearing guy whose...made out of fruit?

Yeah... I'm pretty pissed about that too. Fortunately I don't have to watch the shows, I can gladly watch the good ol' british versions...

Perhaps it is because americans generally only like american stuff? Could explain why they add the word "american" in front of so many show-names.

Like American Gladiators, American Idol, America's Got Talent...  It's like they have to assure people that this show is totally american and there is no risk of encountering any foreign culture.

Especially for Life on Mars I've been asking myself that as well. I'd say that the series is incredibly clever and well made, has one hell of a soundtrack, superb actors and arguably the best ending of all TV series ever.
Still they practically murdered it over there, first by remaking it, then by airing it late at night.
Too disturbing ending anyway for them.

Totally agree with Bixie.

Americans have even remade some comedy programmes we have down here in Australia and the Americans versions are a disgrace. Kath and Kim is the most notable one.

this isn't just american remakes of british shows, its british remakes of american shows. I mean, do we really need a british retooling of something like, say, family feud? I mean, come on, you don't need vernon kay, worlds most obvious orangotaun, presenting it in order to make it understandable for the brits. and let us not forget the atrocious reworking of fairly good "Golden girls," as "Brighton bells", which was about as funny as reversing over your own children in a tank on christmas morning.

Baklava,

What might be seen or considered to be anti-american here at Heroes Community is really more of a truth-telling from people around the world how they see us. I used to think they hated americans here until I began reading other posts by these people and I discovered there might be some merit to the complaints and feelings they have toward my country.

Bixie, you make me laugh. Thank you.

I cannot understand that Elodin is 13. I value his opinion, I've never met a 13-year-old with a valuable opinion.

Yes, I am married with kids.

Unfortuantely it seems some people just like to insult those they disagree with.

Anyways I've always prefered to watch an uncensored version of a program or play an uncensored game for that matter. Whenever anything has needed to be addressed to the children, then I've addressed it. Younger kids need to be protected from certain things obviously but as the get older it is best to try not to shield them too much. Transparency and no topic out of bounds is important to raising a child.

this topic isn't about censor ship {wide, hideous grin] but your comments are welcome[/wide, hideous grin] it's about localisation... you know, where executives take a show and think "Hm, this show is good, but our dumb target audience won't understand any of it because it comes from another country, we need to butcher it so that they can understand what they are saying, there by ruining the show for everyone Moo hahaha!"
