Some degree? I cannot stress enough how vital it is for survival. If we lost it, we'd either die out soon or evolve it back even sooner.

Too much fear is bad of course, just as too little of it is bad.

What about greed? That, too, is needed to an extent, for if we don't want anything more nobody will do any work.

Sloth? Doing too much can be as bad as doing too little. Rest is important, and you have to want to do it or you won't.

Anger? Well, anger helps. It drives us to act, or try to act, against unacceptable and outrageous situations. Very valuable and very needed, in moderation.

Wealth? Being poor and wretched and being filthy rich are equally effective at producing inhuman monsters, middle class is the way to go.

And the examples go on.

It seems that evil only comes with too much, or too little, of something.

Evil is our perspective of evil, there is no 'best' image of evil, all perspectives of evil are evil, which to us is evil, though to others may not be evil. Oh yeah, 7 evils in one sentence.

Not sure about this.

Just an example: Fear is evil. At least the results are evil. What lets us survive is not fear, but respect.

Just to use different words for it

So to say it somewhat more general: Good is mainly what is good for others, evil is what is only good for self. Applied to a game as HoMM any faction is evil HoMM is 100% competition. No idea of doing such a game another way.

So at least there is a difference between such a game and real life.

To be honest I think your missing one type of evil thats even more sinister unless you consider innocence and this said evil to be the same thing.

Divine Evil, aka: angels or holy beings that have gone mad while still in grace, things that we know and trust as iconic beings that have turned on us without mercy.

Falling from righteousness is usually both the most creepy and equally the coolest type of evil, theres nothing quite like watching Nicolai fall from grace or Isabelle declare vengance upon all demon kind forsaking her beloved god.

Truthfully, I find this creepy, demented, and equally, the most fitting of all evils, because lets face it, nothing catches you off guard quite like an angel gone bad.

I rarely define origins and settings to the feeling of something evil. My definition of evil is some one whe deliberatly and consiusly decide to do something that he thinks is wrong, because of personal gain. Of course then there's that thing that every one is evil every time they buy candy, travel by car and throws away food. So there are lines of where it goes from human to selfish, and then from selfish to evil.

So the most evil person to me is eduacated and smart(then we can rule out ignorance), but still a regular human being, who takes a decision to be evil.

This is not related too the current heroes set up. This is about possiblities of villians. the idea of the machine is the total destruction of organic life to give way to machines. It's Brainiac from superman, it's the geth from mass effect, it's Phyrexia from the magic universe.

childhood nightmares also, can be absolutely terrifying. no matter what you say, the horror of a childhood imagination is very real. have you ever seen the Sky adaptation of the "Hogfather"? is where a bunch of people get killed by they're childhood fears, including wardrobes, haircuts and mothers.

as for the thunder and lightning, I think that people coming down from the skys to massacre people with thunderbolts is pretty evil. same with using a living organism, full of maws, teeth, claws, devouring everything to join... think tyranids and you're there.

Thats true, and dont forget their sub units, the infamous Lawyers!

But taking it slightly more seriously, I still say tradgic villians and characters who "fall" to evil are the most interesting ones, theres always something fun in someone who is evil as a template but theres alot more interesting depth to someone whos character falls from goodness.

Also, im not really talking about the kinda evil where the guy simply turns to wrongness for power and awesomeness.  Im talking about the guy who looses his family, his home, his free rights and has nothing left to call his own.

Im talking about the girl who tries to do good things but only ends up causing more problems than righteousness.  Theres something twisted and maniacal about it but equally thats what makes it all the more interesting, watching them fall into that dispair.

And more importantly, most importantly infact, the absense of redemption.  Many Villians such as Agrael have a quality where they feel genuine remorse for their deeds, the opposite needs to be perfectly villianous, someone who is somehow born into the destiny of evil while starting their life heroically.

Another type of evil is the necrotic type, lets face, it HOMMV made some of the most epic necromancers we'll ever see, Markal, Arantir, Ophelia.  There were more, many more, but Markal's ruthless quest for sadistic revenge was beautifully orchestrated.  Try not to misinteruprit this as disturbing, it was just perfect the way he twisted Isabelle into doing everything he wanted.

So in a nutshell, my interpritation of evil in bullet points...

. Must have a sense of purpose with their ambitions in the long run, mindless destruction only works if your the joker, sorry but thats true.

. Must be able to manipulate the innocent or righteous against each other in ways that make them antagonise each others actions and ultimatley bends them from righteousness in turn.

. Must be a monster inside more than outside, beast in the beauty is a wonderful twist, someone who looks good, charming, kind and graceful, but harbors the heart of a sadist is usually the most interesting type of character.

. Must be able to adapt their plan in events that something goes wrong, a bad guy doesnt idly stand around and wait for god, he makes a plan and works his way around mishaps untill it goes right.

. And finally, must be compleatly and utterly iredeemable, someone who feels nothing for their actions, someone who either thrives from the pleasure of it or the suffering it will bring others for their crusade of revenge.  This is what makes the ultimate evil, raw, dark, cruelty without a hint of remorse.

I prefer a more subtle degree of "evil." Someone who tries to be good and make fair choices but ends up in a no win situation making tough choices and then suffering for those choices. For example, a king or an emperor who rations food due to an uncontrollable event such as a natural disaster. Even though the intention may be good, it would cause turmoil in the kingdom. Using dialogue and reason to quell the unrest can only go so far. It would only be a matter of time before banditry and desperation turn to open rebellion. In such a situation, sacrifices need to be made and suffering becomes inevitable. From then it's a slippery slope to tyranny and oppression.

I personally chose the undead, because they are the prime example of evil. The mindless corpses slowly shambling towards you, rotting with the stench of death and decay, swinging old rusty blades from forgotten wars... You just get an impression of evil when you read that, don't you?

My philossofy tells me that Evil is not reality! But they can exist in fantasy games. This is how I see them.

Fire: Anger and Vengeance is part of life.It is evil for watchers but can be good for the 'villain'.
EX: You were bullied 10 years ago because you were weak but now your strong and do the same to the bully he did 10 years ago. Now you are even.

Cold: It is not Evil. it can be creppy but it is because of the silence and while many people find it creepy there are others who fell it relaxing.
EX: You are sleeping in a cold night. It feels like you will be attcked from the shadow but after that you just fell calm and sleep well.

Poison: It could be evil from one point but gas and poyson is just a mechanism of defence.
EX: You are in a swamp and a snake bites you. she only did that becaus she felt threated for you entering her house or shes hungry.

Ligtning: That is not evil but complete order. He will only judge if you actualy did something.
EX: You are a peasant and work for the emperor. If you work hard and do do crimes he wont do you any bad.

Death: I consider this one the most evil because it even defies life and nature themselves.
EX: A necromancer ressucerects an undad army to conquer the world. Yeah like that is batling the order of life.

Mechanical: Robots dont destroy because they want to but because someone programed to do it. The robots themselves arent bad. They obey bad.
EX: An evil genius creates a robot army. He is the one who says to destroy life not the robots.

Maws: They are not evil! They are obeyng life, They are hungry then they eat.
EX: Can you blame a tiger for eating? Hes just trying to live.

Madness: That is not evil but chaos! He destroys everything because that amuse him. Thats like playng boling. Why do you find so fun getting to 'insert word here' down with a heavy ball?
EX: You are mad so you destroy everything. Good guys destroy evil. Mad guys destroy evil AND good so they are neutral.

Child-like: I dont know what you mean by that but if you mean your deepest feers itself then that is creepy not evil.

I voted death but for me if any of this is real fear then humanity is mother of every one of this.
Humans create: forest fires, freezer, poison assasins, absolute kings, wars, mechanics, eating, some humans and the brain.
