hmmm let me think for a minute:
* Pirates (C64)
* Dune (dune 2000) !!
* Warcraft I and II !!
* HOMM series (obviously)
* Chaos Lords
* Colonization (phew the hours I spent at that game)
* Civilazation ofcours
* Settlers I and II
Shae just get yourself an emulator and play those games again on a rainy day!
Hurragutten: there has also been a PC version of Pirates (haven't got it though )

For me...
Colonization is best strategy game ever...It had pretty much micromanagement and all people don't like it but I liked putting people into right work and looking my trade goods and sailing with pirate ships. I loved pirating almost the most. remember forgot myself to eat and sleep when playing that. Too bad there isn't Colonization 2 in horizon. Maybe after civilization 3 Sid Meier will look into that issue...And maybe those battles are now little bit more interesting with more ground units, ships and have more trade goods to sell....
*Starts drooling*
OK, where was I...
Civilization is close second and then comes all the others like HoMM, Steelpanthers and so on...

No need for an emulator
I've recently downloaded Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's revenge on PC. I've found that lots of the cult classic games have been coverted faithfully onto PC and are available online to download for free. I also got Vikings, so I'm having a lot of fun reminiscing about the ol' days, LOL. I'm wondering if anyone knows any sites which may have Eye of the Beholder 1,2 and 3 for free?
I used to have Syndicate on PC, but I lost the CD which is very disappointing, because that was one of my favourite games. Haven't been able to find that one yet....

Well I must have had a deprived childhood... The only other puter games Ive played are the simpsons, micemen, solitaire and freecell...and I never got addicted to them.
But Homm3 has character and unending possibilities and the online play is heaps of fun...as long as you find the right players to play...

bringing back another classic
Fav. Strategy games in no particular order
HoMM 1-3, Civilization 1 & 2, Master of Orion 2, Jagged Alliance 1 & 2 & Deadly Games
Civ3 US is out now ... I've heard some good things about it - can anyone confirm this?
On the other side, what I've heard and seen from Master of Orion 3 wasn't good. Any news here?

I dunno why but all my favorite strategies are oldies.
Like : master of Orion 1 - many times here, still do play.
Civ 1 - many, many hours of playing.Maked 300% once.
But RPG is better - here comes Baldurs 1,2 etc., M&M 6,7,8
Btw i have civ3 home - (my opinion here) - it is no good.
The only good concept is culture, but it is not implemented well. No many difference from civ2 except the graphics.

Quote: Might and magic2...where you take on the 3 Cuisinarts in the mountains, and get a +31 Sun Naginata or somethin. I would do that battle over and over again
hehehe rych, yeah m&m2 rocked, that fight against the cuisinarts was nothing against trying to win that battle near that dinosaur area, desert and mountain terrain, where there was a mix of ancient dragons, time lords and those guys with zillions hps showing up, lol

Damn, never played the M&M series till number 6
But alpha centauri is actually a great game, especially if u have read Kim Stanley Robertsons "Red Mars" trilogy, yhen u know where the leaders of the fractions come from
Defender of the crown, yeah been there done that, but was scared of number 2, coz number 1 sucked, lol.
Pirates, civilization, dune 2, warcraft (Which has 0 replayability now, lol) and especially Starcraft for RTS game.
Well HoMM3 is still my fav, guess the reason is I wasnt on the net before it came out, and it has kinda stucked.

More flashbacks for you Macheads out there.
Anyone remember "Spaceward Ho!"? You started off on a single planet and had to colonize and exploit other planets to build warships to conquer the galaxy. Simple but effective plotline.
But What really took me at the time were the research levels. You could divide your research into one of 5 fields: Attack, Defense, Speed, Mini, and some other one. The first three are obvious, the Mini allowed you to build the same ship with less cost, and the last one was random stuff, like uncovering half the map, destroying a cluster of planets, etc.
Anyway, I loved that game back when I was still living in Maryland. Wish I could find it somewhere again...

Hey, for you amiga vets (veterans, not animal doctors) out there, why haven't you mentioned North and South? Boy, was that ever a great game! Running on top of trains and all! Civ 1 (& 2) was a great game also. I used to love seing Gandhi's face go all sour on me!
I once played a medieval strategy game on a NES 8-bit (believe it or not), with castle sieges and flagging of areas. I don't remember it's name, I can't even vouch for it's quality, as I only played it a couple of times at my friends at a very young age. I do remember liking it, though. Anyone know what game I'm talking about?
I've also been intrigued by the packaging of a game called Stronghold! or something like that. It's a real time strategy game focusing on building castles, defending them and/or sieging castles. It looked great (even to me, a RTS hater), but since I've never heard about it from anywhere else, I got this feeling that the game perhaps sucked. If anyone have tried it, I'd love to hear a review!

Well, I'm not into RTS games too much, so I haven't played Stronghold myself. But this game is very popular in Germany, reaching the number one spot in the charts when it came out. Moreover, it got some excellent reviews, so I'm sure you can't go wrong with this game
Another great strategy game I want to mention is Incubation. It was some sort of sequel to the Battle Isle series. It contains some elements from Jagged Alliance, maybe that's why I like it so much. It has some innovative graphics, too.

I heard that Civ 3 was voted as the best 2001 strategy game. I played it, and I agree. As a strategy it was and will remain the best (better than HOMM in that field), but now it has decent graphic, not the ugly one that was in Civ 2, which, in spite of that ugliness, was a major hit too. I never saw (or can't recall the time I did from my memory ) Civ 1 though.

What about the c&c series?
Come on guys what the ****? have you all forgotten about one of the greatest stragety gaming series command and conquer. I have read through the replys and forgive me if i have not seen someone saying about c&c but i have read from the likes of AOE to Settlers and then to the homm series. The c&c series although different to all you have said, was and still is one of the greatest stragety gaming series ever...

When I go home for the weekends, I still turn on my "old" computer to play some Alpha Centauri. This game has it all; unit flexibility, plenty of special city improvements, and a VERY good diplomacy screen, way superior to that of Civ3. It's simply a much better upgarde of Civ2, than Civ3 could ever hope to be.
Civ2 is also one of my favs, since I used to sit down in my basement playing it foe 8-12 hours a day alost every day in the holidays when I was younger.
The HoMM series are ofc also great, my favs her would be 2, 3, 4, 1.
