How many are still playing Heroes IV?

So, this is 2010, and seven years after 3DO/NWC went bankrupt, if I am not mistaken. Is anyone still playing the game?

I still do, when I have time. I found it a lot more challenging and enjoyable than.. WoW for example. It's a perfect combination of rpg and trun-based strategy. Though the game isn't very difficult, you really have to make it hard for yourself if you want a real challenge.

My favourite faction is Chaos, followed by life.

Me too. Like you said, it's a perfect combination of TBS and RPG. There are some great singleplayer maps out there, while the  multiplayer is as enjoyable as any other sequel. I've even started  making a map recently. I gave up on Equilibris though.

I started making a campaign some years ago, one which reveals the story of Lord Alamar after the reckoning, though I haven't worked on it for a few years. Maybe I pick it up again.

That's said, I never got the Equillibris editor to work. Has it been abandoned?

Mine works, but the team hasn't released anything in five years or so. People are still playing it online, but there are fewer and fewer new maps. There is also an unofficial 3.55 patch, but yeah - the project seems to be abandoned.

Five years... Is a bit amazing that it has gone such a long time and we still play the game.

Do you think there would be any point in releasing a custom campaign by now?

Yeah.. though it would be dull to not have someone to share your creations with. (and someone to correct your spelling/grammar, if you are not a native English speaking-person like me )

I have a problem though.. It seems that to get the files for the Equillibris map maker, you have to download them from Fileplanet, and that costs money. So my campaign won't include equilibriums-specific items, but they are not needed anyway.

I still play it but after finished the original campaign several months ago, the expansion campaign's story can not attract me,so I'm now playing the campaign editor(I mean the original one, not the Equillibris map maker), and now I just begin the second scenario.

I still play it, besause it is quite different from HoMM3. Just to mention a few changes, the hero is in battle, there are different alignments, spells, creatures etc. And yet, when I play the game I still have that 'Heroes' feeling which makes me enjoy the game.

This efficient combination of new ideas and old features result in a game that differs from the HoMM1-3 series quite a lot. But his is not necessarily a problem. Many people don't like the game because of this difference, but I do.

It where! Got it now, but I am to tired to develop maps at the moment..

I also want to add that playing Heroes IV seems to take way longer for me than Heroes III or the HoMM V-heresy. It makes the game much more enjoyable and interesting.

I still play it from time to time.

But sadly, I now know every interesting map too good now, so I don't really find them interesting And I've got no friend, who wants to play it with me! Though I am actually beginning to miss the Elwin and Shaera story, so I think I might soon take it up again (oh dear, my parents are gonna kill me, since I play constantly untill it is finished, when I start!)

I have tried to download some free maps, but sadly, only a few persons have actually managed to make something of interest. The only I actually felt was entertaining was "Draconic" - a laaaarge map! But sadly the final battle is too easy, because you have got so many castles and your heroes have become so extreme superior (I just love it! When you've got strog heroes )

I myself have started on various maps. Only one has yet been finished, but I find it borring, so I'm not gonna upload it anywhere. And the map is too ugly - tried to make a red dragon. Well, it does look like a red dragon, but I don't think there's anything more to say about that

Another one has an okay map of a white and a red dragon fighting, but I have forgotten the plot But I just MUST take it up again and finish it sometime!

Also, I am trying to make a XL map, with a lot of quests and so on, where the enemy always have the advantage from those teleporters. But it's so difficult to remember everything! But I do take i up from time to time and it's 1/3 finished!

Also, I've tried to make a large map, with a great map-display, that I am actually proud of. But some of the quests just won't work and then I fight and fight with them, give up, get back and forgets what the problems were - aaand back to familiar. And then it includes some kind of an idiotic love story But beside this, the map is done - get to make the final touch? Yeah, maybe I should!

The last thing is the campaign. I think it's about 5-8 maps by now, from small to XL. Plot sadly half forgotten and I really don't like the thought of playing all the maps again, to see what works and what doesn't!

I just started playing heroes 4 this year.
Found this site sort of by accident while searching for info on the game. This is my first post here.
I've played the older heroes 2 and 3 quite a lot, so I know the game and the history. When first started playing heroes 4, I was put off by the differences and the fact that you have to choose between 1 of 2 dwellings and not both.
But over time of playing, Ive come to like H4 more than Heroes 2 & 3 and I think its a better designed game.
- Its great how you can have more than one hero and that they are actually part of the combat.
- The lack of upgrades I like better, because with upgraded creatures there are always 2 types of every creature; which takes up more slots in your army and you have to go back to upgrade the units to one type, annoying.
- Caravans are extremely useful, although I didnt realize what they did when I first started playing; I was going all the way back to the castles to get creatures like in H2 & H3.
- The spells are more balanced, more fun to use and more effective than in H2 & H3 in my opinion.
My biggest complaint of H4 is that there are only 3 or so different types of dragons. H3 was awesome how it had like 7 0r 8 different types, like green, red, black, gold, and the powerful ones like the Azure. In Heroes 4 there is only black pretty much, not green or red  And Fairie dragons are recruitable, aren't they supposed to be rare?

If you by the expansions (I think it's in Winds of War) you will also meet the Mega Dragon, which is kinda like the Azure Dragon - except it can't fly

I suppose you meant the Bone Dragon by the third dragon?

HoMM4 Nostalgia

I don't remember the map but I remember repeatedly playing a battle involving an almost unbeatable army of powerful heroes and to defeat them I assembled my own army of heroes with one stack of creatures. Probably the most fun I ever had playing a Heroes game(and I'm someone that loved playing HoMM3 too). Can you imagine how good the game would have been if it had a decent AI? If anyone does decide to make a map, as a native English speaker I can edit the text. Would love to re-install Heroes IV for the right (single player ) map. Off topic speculation: I always wished HoMM would have added a feature ala Warlords where you can save your hero (with experience, stats, artifacts, spells) for higher and higher level maps (and creatures). Adding that RPG element to Heroes IV with a good AI and I would have never quit playing it! (BTW Never liked the Warlords series battle systems though I did play Age of Wonders Shadow Magic for awhile when I was burned out on HoMM3 and HoMM4 (forget about 5 ).
