Poll Question:
Is H4 succesful?

In my opinion the game has some good features, but as every game it has its bad sides. But the combination in H4 makes the good new features look bad and the bad ones to look like **** I think.

Well the question is: What do u think, is H4 succesful?

People hated it mainly because:

A) it introduced too many innovations all at once.

B) with the exception of gameplay, most aspects of the game were poorly developed (graphics, sounds, movies -wich don't exist, etc.) with a extremely low budget, wich is like saying "since we all know you like HOMM we're going to give you the least cared HOMM we can to save money" wich is generally not appeasing to fans.

C) it spat to the face of many important aspects of the series by messing up with factions, mixing them, warping them, essentially transforming something people liked in something people don't like (see: Infernopolis).

Sum A+B+C and you get a game wich, with all the interesting innovations wich make gameplay perhaps even more interesting than in H3, can't overcome the feeling of betrayal of its very own fanbase.

I mainly agree.

But I would like to add that the gameplay was superior to H3 and Ithink it easily competes with heroes 5

The first time I played Heroes 4 I hated it like most other people.
This was because I wanted to see: h3 + a lot more and better. I played a couple of games trying to play it like h3 = one hero + creatures. I do now realise the reason I didn't like it was just because I didn't understand how to play it.

Almost a year later I gave it a second chance (probably because I was very bored and didn't know anything else to do). I played some rpg custom maps and discovered how much fun it was to create armies with multiple heroes in it. The fact they could all follow different development paths and carry different artifacts made it a lot of fun.

Today I think heroes 4 is conceptually the most brilliant turn-based strategy game ever created. RPG has never been mixed so perfectly with classic heroes 1-3 gameplay. I do not agree it was poorly developed (besides expansions) because the amount of content in it was really overwhelming. H5 TOE still has not half the amount of adventure buildings, spells, artifacts and decorative objects from h4, and the editor from h4 is 100 times better. This has caused the adventure map in h4 to be much more interesting then other heroes games.
At the same time the game was just so deep and complex it must have been impossible for the developers to create a good AI for it and overcome all the bugs. And we all know that is it's main weakness.

It wasnt succesful.
NWC didnt make enough money to keep 3DO Afloat after (3DOS) various mistakes and poorly thought out and made games.
Not even in relation to sales and the game itself, it wasnt succesful

You're right: H4 failed, because otherwise 3DO/NWC would have created H5.

The problem of this poll is that the first 2 response choices
are answer to the question: was it succesful? and the next 3 response choices are answer to the question: what do think of h4?
and the discussion seems to go in the direction of the second question.

I've played H3/WoG for soooo long. Recently. I got the H4 standard game, Updated it with patches and Equilibrus. I like the looks of the game. I like the spell system and Caravans. However, the AI, for H4, is not up to par with H3. Many times I found well fortified heroes avoiding me, even though, on paper, they could beat me. Now this does'nt mean I don't like making maps for H4. I love using the H4 utility to make maps. The utility tool is what keeps me interested in H4. Otherwise, it's not as entertaining as it should've been.

I think it is. It is different from other heroes, but I like the choice system of creatures and not just limited to upgrade and no choice. I also really like how you can move creatures in a group without hero, so you don't need to hire another hero just to bring creatures to you. I think if it wasn't successful tribes of the east wouldn't have happened, considering it also has a choice of creature system.

I must say I love Heroes 4. I have Heroes 5 and 3 too, and never plays the fifth. Heroes 4 is the one with the most strategy and choices. No doubt the best Heroes game ever, then followed by Heroes 3. Heroes 5 is the worst heroes game ever, can't understand anybody liking it.

There are many traits one would like to save from H4. And yes, for many aspects it competes with the fifth chapter or even surpass it. But gameplay alone doesn't grant success. Actually, such changes in gameplay should go with a great respect for the long-time fans, to balance the effect. Wich didn't happen.

The biggest problem with H4 for me was the hero deveplopment.
It's great in campaigns but when playing one map games, even if they are extra large, the hero development is frustratingly slow. With good luck you'll be having one grandmaster magics at the end of the map.
The heroes become average units so to say.
There is a solution to this however. We used to give the heroes another skill with athena when playing. That way the advance is doubled and heroes are meaningful again.

The hero development is one of the things that makes Heroes 4 the ultimate Heroes game in my opinion. You have so many ways to create an unique hero. Heroes 5 is the worst game on this. No hero classes at all?

Another thing. I like the slow development in Heroes 4. Especially I like XL maps, hardest difficulty starting with no money. This way every little choice you make is vital, and you really have to balance long term and short term thinking/strategy.

It's of course a lack of good XL maps for Heroes 4, the only official XL map is Zanfa's Challenge, a very good one by the way. I have made 2 good XL maps, almost finnished testing and balancing them, made in the same spirit/dogma as Zanfa's. Just let me know if you want them, they are really good for both single and multiplayer.

You are both right, the problem with hero development in heroes 4 is that a lot of maps are too small for it and large maps are very difficult to balance for it. There are actually quite a lot of xl maps available for h4 (look on celestialheavens) but a lot of them simply don't work right in end game, because neutrals are too weak and the Ai is also too weak. So when you have finally created your team of super heroes there is not enough time and battles to enjoy them.

@Andy Dandy:I enjoyed zanfas challenge also very much, but not before heavily modifying it in the mapeditor. If you have your maps ready i would surely like to see them. I don't believe you played h5 more then a few times because H5 has the most complex skill systems so far and is definately enjoyable to play. The problem is the creators of h5 never implemented good ingame info about the skill system so an ingame skillwheel mod is a must have.
