What I want
Recently I had a discussion with Azagal regarding how HC is doing now and where is it heading. It was a brief, manly exchange of opinions between a true man and an anime girl - it went like this:
veco: HC could use something fresh
Azagal: yeah
veco: paly?
Azagal ORAAAAAAAA!!!!
This thread is the effect of our fruitful conversation and it's point is to whine about general stuff that I don't like + get to know your suggestions. Keep in mind however that you will have to articulate your opinions much more clearly and in greater detail than Az.
First things first
The newcomers section sucks for some reason. No interesting threads in there - newcomers don't read that stuff and we pretty much don't care about stories and/or biographies of people more random than regular members - we know it and newcomers know it too. It's so bad I don't know what's it for anymore, can't we just merge it with the Tavern? maybe it would help them accomodate better and we would have one less click to do in order to read it - sometimes it matters so much it's ridiculous.
Secondly
It's quiet around here. It seems that this winter even hell (osm) froze over along with the toh drama theater. While normally I would consider that a good thing - this time there is not enough activity and ideas to fill in the gaps while they are still there. I predict that WV will remain pretty much silent until more beer pictures appear on Google. Apparently we have to have every beer image in existance posted at least once on this forum. I will put the blame on exams, not you though - just wanted to point that out. That brings us to the 3rd part:
The thread creating problem
Whenever you feel like creating a thread you face the same obstacle:
-What/How the heck should I post to get some attention in it?
 The first thing you (should) do is check if you're not duplicating another thread. If you don't or the old one is from 1874 then you pass this stage.
Tavern, VW or OSM? hmm, OSM will just open another shouting contest, VW will make people take it not seriously enough, so Tavern it is. - and you end up posting it in the VW anyway, don't you?
Now, maybe it's too complicated and it'll scare away everyone except mvass? Maybe it's too effort-involving so even if I get 8 people only BETA will post? Or maybe it's a complete waste of time and it'll end up with Nebdar posting posts including only their numbers?
It's time for visualisations to keep it attractive. Good or at least passable grammar for sure, so that it won't scare away 50% of the potential readers, then some bolding, underlines, colored fonts occassionally caps lock but not too much or else blizzard will start hearing you shout through the text, Azagal will start bleeding from the eyes and gods forbid, someone gets a seizure.
And even if you have everything right, your Ultimate Thread of dreams is posted and ready to change HC... Geny posts a "Hey, Elvin" and all attention is diverted to Kipshasz posting new beer pics from google. Your thread dies and Elvin deletes it afterwards with a satisfied grin on his face.
What do you do?
Well, obviously you'd want to reveal the secret behind the popular threads, like Comic of the Day, Tavern Chat, Funny link thread, What Are You Listeting Too, Dragon Cave, RL photo's of HC members!.
Then you realise that all of them base on one thing - linking stuff that you think is great - comics, videos, pictures of yourself. Ad linking stuff is easy - someone else did the work for you, you just post a link. The exception being Tavern Chat and What is Love where you post your random thoughts.
Is this it?
Is this really it? If a thread requires something more than links and one-liners it's bound to die early? Seems so. Not talking about osm, that's a specific case, Bard's Glade isn't bad either.
Now I have a question: What would you like to see?
revived mafia?
a word game?
fake account mascarade?
something else?
Give a hint to others, maybe they're thinking the same thing but don't want to bother because it'll probably fail anyway.
And try to squeze a bit more commitment. Bombay didn't have to wither away so quickly.

Yeah, you really point out some good stuff, and I really want to post a semi-lengthy post about this, but I don't really have anything to say. My biggest fear is that this is how most people feel and this post kills this thread, except for stuff like "Yeah, I agree.".

I miss those days...
Recently, I've been reminiscing (if that means what I think it means) on the days of my HC youth when everything seemed so new and shiny and fun. And I noticed that HC really changed (NO WAI! ) in those 3.5 years. The main change as I see it is the gradual move of the "off-topic" members' attention from the Tavern to the VW. Less and less fun Tavern threads were made over the time until the point where I can't remember when was the last one. (was it Bombay?)
I try to remember some of the old threads that kept the community together... there seemed to be some VWish chit-chat threads, some semi-RPish fun threads like Salty's and several contests. Some of them, by the way took enormous effort from the members, like the Talent and Basterd threads which were later moved to the Coliseum. (Or were they made there? Can't remember...)

Yeah, so I guess there's no actual idea in what I wrote. Just posting my thoughts and memories here... and maybe wishes.

Definitely have to have another Talent thread. They really do bring the community together and create a lot of interest from people and plus are a lot of fun to participate in.

However the point of this thread was to post things you'd like to see (back) in here to liven up the place.
For example the mafia game - sure, I'd participate in it, maybe get some new guys in so they'll stick around more. If they're inactive though then we're prepared for it and the game goes on either way.

Screw that earlier post of mine! I actually came up with something!
People are way too condescending here! People constantly assume that every one else are idiots. That them, themselves always knows best! This leads to mainly the problem of disrespect and that people are unable to actually listen to what people say.
There's also the besserwisser problem. When ever you post, some one will point out some thing very obvious that you didn't mention because you thought that every one would realize it any way.
I know it's the internet, but would be too much to ask that people treat each other like equals?

I was reading this thread all normally and assumed, like everyone else I bet, that the manly man in the thread's first post wa Veco and the anime girl was Azzie.
Then I realised, VECO IS FEMALE! 
When did that happen???
We have another mytical in our midst.
Either that or (s)he is living some weird avvie life here on HC...

It just so happens that Azzie is a wimp who lived in asia for most of his life so of course I presumed that he was the anime girl.

See, that's exactly what I don't like. People can't just sit around on their asses all day, posting nothing but comics and dragon eggs and then demand a better form of entertainment. True, I'm partly guilty of that myself, but in my defence I have to say that I'm not an initiative starter by nature. While I can have an occasional spark of creativity I'm much better at adapting to situations than at changing them. Point is, if you want HC to be better, more creative, more fun, closer etc. then you have to put your time into it and not just wait for someone else to do it.
And you'll never get rid of my one-liners.

I was about to post pretty much what Geny just said in this paragraph. It reminds me of a friend who was really good at identifying problems but when I said "you could do this to fix it" he would just say "nah too much effort".
