Heroes V by New World Computing

Hello,

it is really sad, that NWC did not make HoMM5. I do not think that this one from Ubisoft-Nival is bad (bah! it is still very very good game!) but look how did the people from NWC imagine this game:

Enjoy.

Seeing this reminded me of just how much I enjoyed HoMM 4.
I know most of the people didn't but I really liked the game.
For some reason I see Ubi's HoMM V like a throw back to HoMM3, maybe because there were a lot of new concepts in HoMM 4.

Half-baked concepts you mean. Happens when you throw in the game anything you can imagine and see what happens.

Maybe it's like you said, anyway the rpg build for the hero and the fact that heroes actually participated in the battle was nice, also the first strike thing. Also I hate upgrades, and having a choice that cannot be undone among units of the same tier actually adds to the strategy. If u make a mistake u can't just wipe it clean and change it.
But I guess the majority decides.
Warcraftization of the factions isn't that bad anyway, gives more of a feel to each separate faction.( I remember that about 3 years ago I first said it, and I still think that Ubi did a good thing overall)

Basically you are stuck with them and the story ends there. That is no strategy, that only decreases your options without even considering you may be facing multiple factions or even that you may want one unit in creeping, another in final battle - even worse considering that some units sucked in 90% of the cases or had outrageous costs.

In short it dumbs down the game, makes it simpler. Won't give room for extra strategies than the tried and true. The moment you build the games the town building is a done deal, nothing more to consider.

Actually once you get used to H4 it had as much, if not more, strategical depth as H3 did. I'm sorry you disliked it to that point, Elvin.

I admit that H5 skill-wheel is a better executed concept but come one - there is no reason at all unit can't move on their own on H3 and H5, no reason at all the hero doesn't really partecipate in battle, no reason at all you can't do caravans between towns and dwellings (well, you can now in TotE). Let's admit it, many of H4 innovations, while not particularily imaginative, where downright improvements.

I admit not much was for the better, though.

They tried (and failed) when they had to improve the workings of sieges. Having to place REAL shooters in keeps felt like adding confusion more than anything else, while removing catapults made the assault way less realistic (peasants wrecking walls with forks?). And while the fact that you had to chose which dwelling to build added strategic depth, I think the reason it was so ill-received is that it felt absolutely random and without any real motivation - it also killed the armies' diversity. Same goes for mixing the factions like that - it just felt unnecessary and confused. And finally, the brutal detour in graphic style was easily dislikeable.

However, I'd have liked if H5 kept some innovation H4 introduced. It felt like FFXIII after FFXII, as if they were scared of too much innovation.
