What is a Lich?
Does anyone actually know what a lich is?

in AD&D....
A lich is a very high level evil magic-user who has undergone certain rites to transform his body into an undead (immortal) state. Quite often these rituals twist the mind of the creature and leave it very much insane.
They get the 'benefits' of having an undead body but retain all the power and intelligence they had in life. They also acquire certain powerful new abilities in the transformation.
Typically, a lich's soul is contained in an inanimate object such as a jewel or a soul jar, and if I remember correctly (haven't played AD&D since they ruined it with the 2nd edition), destroying the body of a lich will not destroy the lich itself. After a period of time, the body reforms. The only way to truly kill one is to destroy the object which contains its soul. This is extremely hard to do.
Playing Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, running into a Lich is one of the worst things you could ever have happen to you.

That ritual is called the Ritual of the Endless night. In the MM series, the first lich ever is called Ethric (the Mad). Once your wizard transforms in a lich, he is immune to mind and body spells. Plus, if the lich loses the lich jar... it's like you losing the pupil of your eye and even worse.
If you want to know what a lich looks like, well, look at LichKing. :-) He has the pic of a female lich. The males look a bit different, follow my thread "I haven't talked to Val about it BUT.."

...what I always thought a Lich was, is simply a very powerful, over-ambitious sorceror or magic caster, which is offerred a chance at further increasing their powers. They basically sacrifice their own life, their physical health and appearance for the grasp of a more ultimate form of magic. For taking this chance, they recieve the time and ability to advance in their magical studies, now having the capacity and time to do such a thing. The way I see it, they do not immediately turn undead, but rather it is a prolonged process. At first, some energy is drained and he/she looks a bit drained, but it is when the new lich grows older, that those signs of the supposed immortality start to appear. Ambition does not have to be evil, and I truly don't see why all liches must be evil though...

For example, HoMM. The liches are the ultimate undead. You can find liches in the Necropolises only, f'got, RMS?

How do you not know what a lich is?! Do you play Heroes Of Might And Magic or POWER RANGERS?! Everybody knows that a lich i an evil "Magician" who can transform! Even my 4 year old cousin knows that! No offence but, STUDY YOUR CREATURES!!!!!!!!!

There are 2 things that I didn't like in your msg. First thing is, read the FAQ. It says there that "what are you, stupid" is an insult. Being new and insulting people is a very bad start. You could politely laugh. I suggest you edit your msg. Second, 2 years ago I didn't know what a lich was either. At lwast not, before I got to find out what the ritual of the Endless night is. In mm7. If you have played MM6 only for example, the only thing you know is he is fleshless and evil and even casts Dispel (Light magic). There is time for everything under the sun.
