Is Champion Mode even possible.

I have played scenarios and beat them on every mode except champion. Maybe some are easier than others but if you can manage to beat half dead on champion well i just dont think its possible. I dont see how it can be done.

Wasn't that hard. A bit difficult was 2nd map in beginning.

You're joking, right? H4 has worst AI , for computer player and creeps. Starting without money means nothing, even better, monster stacks are larger, and you get more XP for clearing them out.

Actually, XP scales with the number of neutral monsters. So higher difficulty doesn't give you higher XP. Higher difficulty actually gives you lower XP, because AI-player monsters XP are also scaled down while not increased in numbers proportionally.

First maps are very hard in any campaign on hardest difficulty, sometimes you need to load many times and rely on luck in battles, morale and such chance stuff might be essential but the maps are possible to win, I had most trouble with the first map in might campaigns, many reloads and changing tactics. Try using 1 creature in a slot in battles and such stuff to divide the enemy or steal retaliations, many other ways to improve your chances exist as well.

This is false. Higher difficulty is sure to get you more XP because neutral stacks are larger. When you beat them , you get more XP. Simple.

no if I remember well, it's harder to level up in high difficulties. a battle will grant you as much XP as in lower difficulties, but since they are harder, sometimes you have to wait a bit before you can afford to fight.

hordes of berserkers 1st week was really deadly for your army.
hordes of sprites or imps were really deadly for the heroes, you could easily beat them, but sometimes at the cost of all your heroes, which meant no XP

20 creatures of any level give you more experience on novice than the appropriate amount of creatures on impossible (say 60-70). Fact.

I've just recently completed all the original heroes 4 campaigns now on champion level, except for the barb campaign with Waerjak and the chaos campaign with Tawni. I've just completed the first scenario of the pirate campaign, so I assume I'll get that one done too.

Half-dead was actually rather easy. But the first map seemed to just work out well for me. I whipped through it dominating everything with the demonologist summoning spells.
The only hard part was this one battle on the third or fourth map that took me like 15 reloads before I could get passed. It was the one where you start with no town and there are a group of vampires blocking the way. That was probably the hardest part of the whole campaign. The vampires would fly down in two moves and go right for Gauldoth.
Had to buy a bunch of skeletons from the cemetary and place them in all slots, then have them all surround Gauldoth so the vamps could not swarm him. Then finally after many tries I finally scored a win and was able to move on.

So I hear from reading on this forum here that the Barb campaign on champion is very hard.
Well I'm saving that one for last and I have high expectations.

This is false. Higher difficulty is sure to get you more XP because neutral stacks are larger. When you beat them , you get more XP. Simple.

To put it simply, because of XP scaling,

If you're only fighting neutrals, then leveling rate is the same regardless of difficulty level, because as you increase difficulty, the increase in number of neutrals is exactly balanced out by the decrease in XP per monster you get.

If you're fighting AI-player armies, the XP per monster is also lower as difficulty increases, but the size of AI-player armies isn't affected by difficulty level. In fact, in many cases, the lower the difficulty, the larger the AI-player armies because they can expand their base quicker. So overall, lower difficulty level makes it easier to level up.

So on the Gathering Storm, the best way to get the most uber heroes is to play the individual camapaigns on easiest, particualrly by waiting for the AI to build massive armies and then killing them for XP (a lot more efficient than waiting for neutrals to grow).

For me the game actually seems harder in a way on intermediate setting as opposed to champion, because of this.

On intermediate you are at war against the computer, who has larger armies, and collects more of the resources.

On champion, you at war more so against the neutrals, and the computer growth is slower, just like the player. So the computer can become less of a threat because it always is weakened by the strong neutral groups.

Heroes 3 on the other hand is another story.
If I put heroes 3 on higher difficulty, the computer comes with large armies quite fast. I was never able to play on impossible or on expert for heroes 3.

I think the most difficult level in heroes 4 is actually the advanced setting, not champion or expert because then the neutral armies are too large for the computer. But it depends on the map of course too.

I think you're right, more or less. The maps that are the hardest on Champion are those that you have no town and must fight through hordes of neutral monsters to progress, like the H4 and TGS barbarian starting maps.

I said this not too long ago, but I've been playing Heroes 3 lately and guess what? I beat a few scenarios on expert and then later beat one on the Impossible rating. Got an Archangel rating.
I never thought it could be done but from reading on this forum others have claimed to have played heroes 3 on the hardest setting so I figured it must be possible after all.

So I've learned:
In heroes 3 on the hardest setting you really got to move your ass in the beginning. Grab any resources possible, build the highest dwelling possible and GO. Get as much resources on the map before the computer, have a strong hero that fights and another that follows picking up the treasues so your main one don't waste steps.
It don't always work out though.
In heroes 4 for the hardest setting the strategy is a little different. You can sit back and pick your battles more catiously because the computer will attack neutral units and weaken itself.
What I strive to do in heroes 4 is make mainly hero based armies, and have other units stay in the towns for defense. In heroes 3 that can't be done though because heroes can't join together and can't be in combat and can't be without troops.
Generally I like heroes 4 over 3, but both are great games in different ways.
