Dragon Quest IX

Well, seeing as how I couldn't find a thread for this game, and considering how awesome it is...

I've played the game for about 15 hours or so, and I must say that I really enjoy it. The difficulty is cranked to 11, which is fine by me, since most RPGs nowadays are too easy. Also, it has the feel of a classic '90s RPG, what with the party creation and all.

Without going into spoilers, here's my current party for those interested:

Winter (Minstrel/Hero) - Level: 24
Pyro (Warrior) - Level: 24
Windia (Priest) - Level: 23
Terra (Mage) - Level: 23

If any of you have the game and need advice, I'd love to help, I consider myself something of a Dragon Quest veteran, what with having beaten 3, 4 and 8 already.

Going to suggest you switch your main hero's job when you can.  I got a bit bored, and decided to find a grind point (no spoilers) and start working on one job at a time, one character at a time.  For instance I switch my main to gladiator..and leave the others as they are .. and fight much stronger creatures then a level 1 should.  Have gotten a few classes level 25(ish) that way for each character.  Really helps with the stats.

Right now I have...

Mytical - Level 40(ish) Glad(level 30 Min, level 25 Mage/Cle/Pal)
Thorn - Level 40(ish) Pal(level 30 Mar Art, 25 Ranger/Cle/Mage)
Luna - Level 40(ish) Priest (Level 25 Ran/Glad/War)
Dusk - Level 40(ish) Mage (Level 25 War/Glad/Mar Art)

The reason I did this..
Mytical - Needed some boost in spell points..as Glad does not have many..and wanted to get some points into shield as I maxed out Sword)

Thorn - Again magic is the reason here.  Had a TON of HP (40 pal/Mar artist will do that), but very little magic.  A few levels in the casting classes helped.

Thorn/Dusk - Hitpoints.  They had so low of hitpoints it was not good.

Working on like 80hours total, and not half way through. Takes a LOT of time and patience to do the above.  Still looking for the quests for two of the classes..which I am not sure what they are but I think Sage and Mage Knight. Havn't done a lot of the class quests either, which I need to do..

Btw..firing a bow while wearing a shield..it is kinda wierd.  Max shield skill rules.

Wow, further proof that the game is awesome. XD

I haven't really changed classes yet since that means I drop back to 1 and I want to get to forty to get a lot of those high level class quests first.

Some of those class unlock quests suck though. :S
(Super high tension with Dragon Slash on three Slimes, and they tend to flee... -_-)

I remember the good old days (DQ III) when Sage > All Else
(Apparently, there's a balance to each class now, so you can't stomp with a perfect setup)
Your end-game party back in DQ III was invariably the Hero (who was a unique character who couldn't change classes at the time and had a unique skill setup) and 3 Sages, since the only thing Sages couldn't use was heavy armor.

Sages could use any weapon, the spell sets of Clerics and Mages, and had roughly 85-90% of a Warrior's HP.

NOW I have a way to do that easy, but you'd have to prepare for it ahead of time (the ultra high tension etc).  Currently I am killing Wight Priests with a very low damage Staff.  Maybe I should give it to the priest instead of the mage lol. You have to do the killing blow with the Staff..and all my other characters do so much damage they can't help except to buff the one with the staff.

Warning A SMALL Spoiler ahead.

How combat goes in the 'Kill the Wight Priests with a pathetic staff.'

Mytical uses Egg On > Mage
Paladin uses ability to enchant Mages Staff with Fire (forget what skill gives this..think it is from a much lower level class)
Priest defends.
Mage casts Accelerate.

Mytical Uses Egg On > Mage
Paladin Defends.
Priest heals or defends
Mage Casts Accelerate.

Mytical Uses Egg On > Mage
Pal/Priest Defends.
Mage casts OOMPH > Mage

Mytical uses Egg On > Mage
Pal/Priest Defends (or priest heals)
Mage attacks.

Rinse/Repeat as needed.  You will be defending A LOT.

I hate Wight Priests so much... -_-

Actually, I hate ANY enemy that has an instant death move in its repertoire since they seem to have 100% accuracy with the darned things.

I forget which class..and if it is a skill or a spell, but there are ways of helping that.  Also there are items that help against it.  Which you have plenty of chance to use these as you try to kill them.  Mages do pathetic damage, and the faerie staff has a very low attack anyhow.

Dourbridge.

It's the flamboyant tent (especially if you compare it to the living conditions in that town). Can't miss it.

I changed the vocation of all four of my characters:

Winter - Level 10 Thief (29 Min)
Pyro - Level 10 Mar. Artist (29 War)
Windia - Level 10 Warrior (28 Priest)
Terra - Level 10 Priest (28 Mage)

My reasoning was to give them a new vocation with weapon style overlap (except in my Warrior's case, where he became a Martial Artist with 0 overlap, but I did that to gain the ability to Psyche Up).

DQ VIII used to be Psyche Up cheese to beat bosses, so I know how effective that is. ;P

Psyche up cheese still does wonders.  With Egg on and Psych Up you can do a ton of damage with any of the warrior types.

You are probably past me now, got caught up playing Might and Magic : Clash of Heroes.  Take something like bejeweled, give it some RPG elements (like levels, damage, etc)..add in Might and Magic creatures.

Heroes have spells that do various thing (you gain 'mana' by making chains, deleting units to help make chains, doing or receiving damage) also.  It is VERY addicting.

Oh I know...trust me I know. I've beaten CoH already actually.

Way too short though.
CoH Plot >>>> HOMM5 Plot

Anyways, I'm almost done with the main storyline of DQIX, but if you recall me saying the difficulty cranks up to 11 quickly, by the endgame, it's at 111 (and that's not counting the grotto bosses, but most of those are post-game, so...).

Stuck at a certain boss that you have to beat two forms of in a row.

So, where are you at now?

Lol, I just got out of prison. I've stopped because of CoH.  I need to finish Dragon Quest hehe.  You might have to go back and get some more levels in various other professions to get stronger.

Oh, I'm both happy and sad to inform you that you're like 90% through the main game (but post-game is technically infinite, so... ).

The boss I was talking about in my other post...you'll face him 3 bosses from now, but from here on out the bosses are pretty frequent; case in point, him and the other 3 bosses are at the same dungeon.

And yeah, I've been having to grind other vocations, which is frankly starting to get under my skin. In hindsight, a Spear Priest is a crummy idea if you need her to be a healer in a long fight.

EDIT:

I beat the game's final main boss! Muahaha!

Party that did it:
[Anything besides the highest two vocations skipped for brevity's sake.]
Winter (39 Minstrel/35 Gladiator)
Pyro (40 Warrior/36 Thief)
Windia (35 Paladin/38 Priest)
Terra (35 Sage/38 Mage)

Also, the post-game's first quest is a fetch quest. Yes, a fetch quest.

That involves alchemy for the most part.
Baw...better start looking for ingredients.

BUMP to post some stuff and a link to a forum for all things Dragon Quest.

First, the stuffs:

My party is now looking like this:

Winter (48 Minstrel)
Pyro (49 Warrior)
Windia (46 Paladin)
Terra (46 Sage)

I'm dividing my time between writing videogame articles, King's Bounty: The Legend, Starcraft 2 and Dragon Quest IX, so it's not my fault they're not capped yet!

I'm grinding Baramos for Mini Medals and the Legacy Boss map he drops at a 5% chance. I've gotten two Aliahan Boots from him already (20% drop). .

And, the linkie: http://dqforums.com/site/content.php
(I'm linking this as a favor to that forum, as I really enjoy this RPG series and I'd love it if they blossomed into an awesome community, much like this one is.)

(And since cross-referencing is serious business, I also linked to this forum from over there. Maybe there are some HOMM/ M&M fans in that forum.)

KAZING! (DQ style bump)

Come on guys, I can't be the only one who plays DQIX on this forum! :/

Anyways, here's my party lineup now:

Winter - Level 66 Minstrel (100 Swords/Shields/Guts)
Pyro - Level 67 Warrior (100 Swords/Shields)
Windia - level 60 Paladin (100 Spears/Fans/Shields/Virtue)
Terra - Level 59 Sage (100 Wands/Shields/Enlightenment/Faith)

I've been beating on Murdaw until my party gets even beefier, so I can then level him up to 16 to take the next boss map from him.

And lastly, but not least, I unlocked the Luminary vocation. Woot! If I could send maps via Wifi, I'd send you the grotto I found that has the Moai Minstrels you need for the quest. It's a level 55 grotto.

I play!

I got the game for Christmas and am really enjoying it!

Current party -

Lvl 29 Minstrel, I changed him to a thief for abit
Lvl 30 Warrior
Lvl 30 Priest
Lvl 29 Mage

If this game had multiplayer capabilities over the internet, it would be perfect.

Still as it is, it is great. I like the weekly stuff Nintendo is providing. I wonder how long they'll do that?

And I'm shocked your forum doesn't have more action.
