Elvin's Guide to Understanding the Internets
In the contemporary world the internets have become an integral part of our daily life whether as a means of recreation, information or communication. It is our own personal little domain where we can take refuge when disappointed from the cruel reality, a place where we can be whoever we want to be, where our rl past cannot haunt us. Some would go as far to get withdrawal symptoms for not having internet access for a single hour, others have grown keyboards in their hands, others have sprouted roots to their own chair - indeed internet addiction is a phenomenon that we cannot overlook. However our understanding of the internet is rather low compared to its extensive usage, many seem to overlook its properties and internal mechanisms/tendencies which can leave them exposed and vulnerable to the virtual world's influence. It is for this reason that I decided to write this guide, in the hope that future generations will benefit from my secret insights.
PS the following are a global phenomenon and by no means exclusive to HC.
* One of the internets' basic principles is the Law of Attraction. Given enough time certain pictures, news, videos will be attracted and find their way to your site/forum. It is an automated process and nothing can prevent this, they will seek you out even if you do not. If you want a sample of what may knock on your door while you are on the internets: Badgernadgerbadger, college humour, 4chan and so on.
* The internets have a close connection to the fire element. News can spread like wildfire, certain topics are inherently flammable or downright explosive, others induce warmth and feelings of fuzziness inside. Whatever you do be prepared that a fire may randomly break out near you and it may be impossible to contain - flight may be your only option of survival.
* The Law of Stupidity is another crucial principle that defines the cyberworld. Firstly stupidity has a very high attraction value, see Law of attraction. It has a better chance to gravitate around sites/forums than anything else humanity has ever invented - It might even be argued that it is cultivated in said locations. Secondly the internets have the tendency to dumb down any content, ranging from complex to impossibly simple. The reasons for that are unknown but it is speculated that the internets themselves are causing an erosion of the human mind so this could be a defensive mechanism subconsciously triggered by us. See x rots your brain.
* Law of seriousness is perhaps the most essential of all. No matter what you say or think make no mistake - internet is serious business. There is absolutely no way to find something unserious floating about so you should conform to the principle and treat things with the seriousness they demand. Like this one.
* Law of Identity Warp. People tend to use personas while in the virtual world, an identity of their own choosing with its own character, reasoning and reactions. It often takes a life of its own, even highjacking the poster's original character which makes it harder to judge who you are really talking to. See welcome to the internet where men and men, women are men and kids are FBI agents. Evidence on this can be found in the member contest found in the colisseum.
* Law of Laziness. One of the common misconceptions on the internets is that people care enough to read what is being posted or bother to reply in a serious issue. Law of laziness has a selective blindness effect, if for instance there is an one page thread that contains all the questions people will still find a way to ask what has been posted 2 lines above. Or miss ceph's flat-out admitting to be part of the VIP club. It also renders people more susceptible to make generic/pointless comments than working on a worthwhile thread.
* Law of Invisibility. The majority of people will fail to notice non regulars or their posts will fade from memory after approximately 5-10 seconds. This causes an illusion of invisibility that is broken after a period of regular posting. This illusion is easier to shatter with the creation of a non generic thread.
* Law of Role-Assuming. One of the numerous effects of the internet is that it causes people to seek a role within their community much like companies seek to create their own franchise. This madness may go as far to cause depression or even leaving the forum in the case they are unsuccessful to fill a specific role in the great order of things or they find that others surpass them in their chosen role.
* Law of Diminishing Ethusiasm. Like with economics the internets are going on a circle, ethusiasm follows the influx of new members, which reaches a peak after which it starts a diminishing course. The next step will find numerable members disappearing, enthusiasm level low until it reaches the point where a newbie makes a thread about this forum/site being dead. The cycle slowly begins anew. For returning members it is possible that their invisibility rating has increased once again unless they managed to make an impression during the last time. In that case the news of their return spreads like wildfire.

One does not exclude the other. My DemiMod senses allow to always use the LoL (Law of Laziness) and only alert when something interesting happens.
