| Stephen Hawking -The Grand Design-
Stephen Hawking has written a new book, "The Grand Design".

 Main idea:
God did not create the universe, because gravity means it would have happened on its own.

| No, haven't read about this, and frankly, I think it's been too long since I delt with this kind of physics for me to truely understand it.
But it's interesting if there's actually a break-through in understanding Gravity and maybe even getting it combined with the other natural forces.

 Umm...

 Well...

The theory is from 94 or 92 if I recall correctly. What they've been doing for now has been systematical work. If there was something breakthroughish it would have been back in the nineties.

| I'd probably read it if I understood advanced physics.
Actually, no, I probably wouldn't.  I don't really care to read about theories of how the universe began, since I don't think it's linear.

| Well, Hawking is just some guy and he may or may not be right. However this "God did not create the universe, because gravity means it would have happened on its own."   type of logic is totally flawed. The two halves of that statement are entirely independent of each other. The existence of one does not verify nor disqualify the existence of the other.

As far as where the universe came from, it's nothing more than interesting trivia. Who cares? I don't care where the orange trees came from as long as it tastes good. My only interest is simple curiosity, but it's not a big deal.

I think for a child to stare at the stars and "wonder" is more important than the actual answer.

| It's helpful yes, but not necessary to understand it. It's probably more helpful as a learning tool than in actual application.
Another example might be magnetism. Magnetism is critical to electronics. It's especially critical to inductance. But what it is or where it came from, I have no clue. Nor do I really care other than curiosity.

I just don't see the whole "where did it come from?" question as being very important.

| I've just seen at the book shop, a book presenting 6 theories of how the universe may have been created there (in french)
 haven't read it

Quote:it is impossible that matter is eternal

I think I remember reading that the matter can "die" indeed (though, I'm not sure it has been proven for everything)

if you take another approach, the matter can only exist relatively to the rest of the universe, so it must be affected by changes in the universe.
