Poll Question:
Flavor Text: Aye or Nay?

With Heroes of Might and Magic VI on the horizon, I thought we might discuss the inclusion of flavor text.
This is the actual poll.

Now what is flavor text, you may ask. Well, flavor text is text that is added to increase depth. Say for instance the biographies that are included to portray the life of the hero so far. But the Creature bios added in HoMMVI and the pop-up texts you got when you claimed a mine are also flavor text. In HoMMV the creature bios were enlarged and we also got town bios added into the mix. However there are more things that may be considered as flavor text. For instance artifact histories/descriptions, unit responses etc.

So I ask you: Flavor Text, Aye or Nay?

I'd say it depends on whether they want to revive the M&M RPG or not. If they do, then yes, it will add an immersion factor. If they don't, then I honestly don't care about most of the flavor text

I miss the "event" texts from artifacts.  It was always a conscious decision to try and pick up the big Major Artifact in Heroes 3, because you didn't know if you were going to have to shell out twenty gems or fight a pack of rogues in the process.  At the same time, there were always short anecdotes for the free artifacts, too.  "You help an old man cross a river; in the process, his boots fall in the water.  You dive into the river and retrieve the old man's boots, and as a reward, he gives you a strange medallion."

I'd like to see that kind of flavor text return.

I agree with Aosaw, but I would honestly like if they added something like it was in H4. I liked the artifact/item description best there, aside from the numerous text blobs that appeared when you stumbled upon the said item (detailed, some based on in-game lore)

The same goes for spells to be honest but that might as well be just time consuming

It is pretty unanimous among everybody that the lack of flavour texts were counter-productive to H5, and that they must make a return in H6.

In a similar vein, it bothers me that in H5 you can have several four-leaf clovers or Rings of Sar-Issus.  Didn't it used to be that the artifacts were all unique?  There shouldn't be more than one of a given artifact in any map; that's why it was always so exciting to kill a hero--you got all the artifacts he had collected, and they were always new.

No, you can get duplicate artifacts in all five games. They're just much rarer in 1-4 because the variety is far wider.

As far as I remember, the quest to get an artifact was in Heroes 2, not 3 .
But anyways, I love reading all the events and infos possible, so
of course I voted aye, we want more!

Voted for as much as we had in the past. Honestly, I don't think it would take that much to program, and it does IMO make the game feel a bit more complete.

I am glad you all agree with me that we should have as much or even more flavor text.
However I have to point out that HoMMV added some pieces of flavor text in areas that weren't there before. They have added the history of towns, for instance. They greatly enhanced creature bios and they may have had the most unique hero bios.
But I also agree that the taking away of much of the text-windows was a terrible descision.

I am also glad that nobody, yet, voted for the lessing of text. I overheard a friend the other day, who claimed that text has only one purpose. To distract you from the actual game and play it longer without doing anything.

Bios on things like items don't affect the people that don't care, but positively affect those that do. Hiring a semi-imaginative writer to sit down and type that stuff should be a rather minute cost on the whole.

Aye, and we also need some of the windows to come back in H6, and have them be triggered, so that I don't have to waste precious movement points to go to a sign and get the story.

It's very good to see unanimous consensus on this subject. Nobody wants to see the flavor text get lessened and the lot of us want more of it.

So Elvin, you may want to make notice of this on the insiders forum. Of course that is if you have not done so already.
