Subterrain... how about floating sky islands?

I came to think of it that just like there is a world below, there could be one above. So each map could have 3 realms to say. Sky world would be made of magicaly floating islands. The equalent of rock terrain in subterrain world cold be just some random terrain pattern seen from hight above with some clouds partly covering it. In order to keep it islandy the islands should always be limited in size and transportation between them should be done with teleport monoliths.

The way to come up or down to the world would be just some unique looking monolith, just like the subterrain gate.

Do you like/not like?

I like this, but with more diversity. In the sky world, there could be different terrains:

-high mountain areas (peaks, etc.)
-floating cities (city ground terrain)
-Solid Clouds - white for haven, grey for so. else;
-world trees?
-overhigh magical towers?

also, things like zeppelins, balloons or magical creatures functioning as ship should be there. They would be able to float between the more or less solid ground areas.

Yes please!

Though if the world Editor is powerful enough we should be able to turn the underground into something like this anyway.

Heck even in HV you could pull off the Underground as above ground, all you had to do was change the lightning and get rid of all the black "wall".

Now in HVI do that with some fog and lighting changes as well as negative Y value placement of some objects, probably pretty doable.

So basically we just need more realms. That wouldn't be much of a problem... I mean to add the option to use for example 1 to something "undergrounds" and the ability to use the new "sky objects" (like the idea btw). That way you could even make a whole campaign just on one map with multiple layers, each layer representing one level. So u could make underground 1,2,3,4... cool.

I like the idea, but I also see it being very taxing on hardware to have that many layers active at once.

I do like the idea, though.  I love the concept of an "above-ground" realm that's essentially up in the mountains, or a world tree.

I do think this is a great idea for something to switch up Heroes.

it also opens up the possiblity for an air-based sky faction.

Oh yes, some 3D possibilities would be neat. However, there are two basic issues:

-Fog of war - you're standing on the top of teh world, but still can't see much.
-Mapmaking - only for bravehearts, or the editor gets even more complicated it's right now.

It should be optional though.

? I do not see the problems too much? Why are 3 "planes" worse than 2? You can just not put anything on the highest plane...
...i imagine this pretty much exactly as underground, in basics. And an option to turn it on/off when making a map, like with the H3 editor, woudl be great.

Exactly. It doesn't require anything special. Just a "stairway" object on the map and a new terrain that looks like a landscape seen from far above as an equalent of rock terrain in subterrain world.
