I'm not a big fan of offensive magic in Bioware rpgs. If you took your time to calculate the dps of mages and warriors (not plain but buffed by spells - haste for instance) you'd notice the warriors offer much higher dps at most stages of the game in terms of whole combat - and in addition, they don't need to worry about friendly fire or re-memorizing. You're always set to go and fight.
Hence I use important buffs and crowd control, mostly. In BG2 it was crucial to dispel things like stone skin, but even that was much easier for a inquisitor due to his double-power dispel magic ability. Horrid Wilting was fun, but never did any massive difference.
In Dragon age, spell DPS is even worse, and in its expansion, Awakening, mage is the most useless team member, albeit crucial for providing haste and dropping mana clash that instantly kills everything that has mana, including a fair share of bosses.

^ I'll take your word on that one.
But meh, I do not play BG or (BG2 for that matter) because I want a challenge. I play it because of the character development and the MASSIVE replayability. You just WANT to try every single combo to squeeze that DELISH Character Development out there, especially the Romances in BG2. The fact that ALL of these characters are well-developed and defined and often have to deal with RL issues during your travels is an astounding feat. Additionally, most of these Arcs are kinda lolz:
Edwin: "I FOUND IT I FOUND IT. BOW TO ME, MORTALS. FEAR EDWIN ODESSEIRON AND HIS NETHER SCROLL!!!" *maniacal laugh*
random NPC: "You might want to watch out with that one. Scrolls of that calibre usually contain highly dangerous magic and-"
Edwin: "SHUT UP, simian! I'm smart enough to handle myself."
<24 hours later>
EDWINA: "Aaaaaaargh, What is HAPPENIIIIIIIING to me O_O?????"

I wonder, Doom, is there ANY game you find adequately challenging? Did you ever consider that maybe the problem is you? Maybe you're just too good at computer games.

Oh, I recall many Supaplex was incredibly challenging. I made it to level 102 eventually but it was very difficult at times. IWBTG isn't really hard, it's just that the first few times you play there are unavoidable hazards that will just kill you since you're not aware they are there or you're not aware in what way you should avoid them. 4D Prince of Persia (A remake of Prince of Persia with altered difficulty) was pretty much impossible. Xenon2: Megablast was notorious for the sick difficulty and I never made it past fourth stage. Some NES games I played in the past were also very challenging, but I was younger and arguably less proficient in gaming, so today it might be easy for me
As you can see I'm stuck mostly at arcade games that require monkey reflexes - well, the hardest one cause I'm generally a good arcade player.
When it comes to RPGs however, I can't really say - I'm a powergamer and min/maxer, so each game, once I get familiar with the mechanics, becomes easy to me very fast. If anyone knows a hard RPG or hack'n'slash to recommend for difficulty - may be old - let me know.

The point is that DF doesn't know what House rules mean.

Actually I do but I fail to see the connection between house rules and overly easy games

If you haven't played Gothic series, definitely try those out. You won't find a challenge in G1 or G2 for that matter, but if you get G2 Gold (without even playing G2, the way I'd suggest doing), then you shall see quite a few challenging things there. And it is not the combat itself (not only) that is difficult - the time at which you need to do what you need to do is what matters as the game world is REALLY open .
Oh, and did I mention going Hardcore?
Try to complete G2G (or NotR as the addon is abbreviated) without EVER dying in the game. I have been trying on various saves for two months now and in spite of my vast knowledge of the game, I still find myself stumbling on a straight line - the game can just trick you in the most abominable ways.

That's why you still complain about them.
Go play Seiken Densetsu 3 without upgrading any character class beyond the starting class and come whine to me about it being too easy.
Or complete LoZ: OoT without a sword.
That's what the connection is.
Done both of those btw.

TDL: I played Gothic 3. It was, well, extremely easy. Long range weaponry was overpowered a huge lot and once you got 400 STR Krush Tarach was just murdering everything. Is second part harder? I hope so.
Joonas: I was never a fan of the "no materia no weapon no limit break"-type challenges when they were very popular at FF7 forums Idk, having a hard game is one thing, not using what the game offers is another. As powergamer, I want to find the most optimal way using the most powerful tools. Limiting myself won't be fun one bit to me, I'm afraid
