a question from China
Hi,everyone.I'm from China.I meet some problem when I try to translate the occupations of the heroes in Heroes IV into Chinese.Would you like to tell me something about a pyromancer and the pyromancy?And is there any difference among a mage,a sorcerer,a wizard & a warlock?

Hi! Pyromancy is a skill specialized in fire magic while Pyromancer is a character that practices pyromancer.
A Mage is a Magician or A Sorcerer
A Sorcerer is the one who practice Sorcery or another type of Wizard
A Warlock is a male witch, sorcerer, wizard, or demon.
A Wizard is the same as mage and regarded as wise man!
They are all hero type class which speciallizes/practices magic skills.
Mage = Wizard = Sorcerer = Warlock
They are basically the same in relative to each other!

Wow, translate Homm into Chinese. Interesting.
tyfon, have you seen the Chinese edition of Homm3 ??
(I guess you have ) Some of the translations are
very "interesting".
Mighty gorgon = ???
Ogre mage = ???
Btw, I'm a Chinese too.

It all depends upon which system of magic you are operating in but some common beliefs:
Wizards, learn magic through study and practice spells and gestures.
Sorcerors, learn magic through the summoning of demons and have to control them to work magic (Black magic) which is easier to learn that wizardy. (so weak and evil people take this short cut)
Mage, term used to classify a magician if you don't know where he derives his power from.
Alchemist, uses magic of potions and transmutation of metals.
Warlock, given his soul to a dark power in exchange for magic. (this differs from a sorceror, because the sorceror tries to enslave the demons through force of will)
Magician, might know some magic but mostly uses tricks to fool the ignorant,(Most practicioners of magic consider being called a magician an insult, thus the term Mage)

I'll try my best to translate them.but there're something still confuse me.What will happen if a female hero tries to be a warlock,a "male" witch, sorcerer, wizard, or demon?
thunderknight,I've seen some Chinese editions of Heroes3,and which edition did you mean? I guess it's the "Z" edition,not the "D" ones. Some of the translations are too "interesting" to read.
btw,I hate them translated the Azure into "ShengLong".What the hell is it?!

I have never heard, that sorcerer is an evil caracter!
Both wizards, sorcerers, mages and warlocks can be good as evil in my knowledge.
But it also depends which game you're playing!

I am a 100% Chinese too.
BTW, could anyone tell me if there is any Games that is similar to Hero series that has Asia fantasy story background? (in English of course) Don't tell me the Chinese version of the HoMM.
One more thing, I think we play more "Westerns" games than Western play "Eastern" games. Don't tell me "Street fighter" is an "Eastern" game.
I only know there is a game call "three kingdom" and that is all, no more.
Anyone know?

Hi, BBQELF,
Ya, "Three Kingdom" or "Sango" is one of the most famous series of turn-base games based on Chinese history. Maybe you would like to try some other games from KOEI, though most of them are based on Japanese history. (so, I don't like them very much  )
I've also play some Taiwanese RPG and turn based games like "Jin Yung", "Legend of Sian Jian Xi Xia", Flame Dragon, etc etc. They are all in Chinese.
Maybe you already know it, take a look at

It's a site talking about homm in Chinese. Very informative and those Chinese translation of homm creatures are very amusing.

Of course I know what you means those games, however, I just wondering how many "Eastern" games that have English version and able to be played by a "Western" person?
