Hall of War Arena Map

This is the latest version of the polish Arena map played every day by HoW League users. For those who like to duel it's worth checking out.

Map features:

- Army strength of week 6
- Witch Hut to obtain rare skills
- Sphinx gives level 16th
- You may choose one of three artifact areas - 1 relic, 2 major, 3 minor
- Banned spells: divine vengeance, armageddon, cotn, word of light, earthquake, rune of charge
- Banned artifacts: ring of speed, staff of the netherworld, pendant of mastery, mask of equity, unicorn horn bow, skull of Markal, lion crown, armour of forgotten hero, windstrider boots, cloak of death's shadow and artifacts that are not useful in the field of battle
- Banned Heroes: Urgath, Rutger, Kaspar, Kilghan
- Banned Buildings: Pile of Skulls, Avenger's Brotherhood, Infernal Loom
- Avenger limited to tier 1-4
- First Aid Tent has 5 actions instead of 3
- New Arenas: all battle grounds that some of you know from the big arena mod except Hell's Kitchen, Khan and Forgotten Altar + 6 completely new made by HoW users including Burning Land, Hour of the Wolves, Death is Road to Ave, No - Not My Pumpkins, Hall of Fame and Ambush


Rules and instruction:

1. Visit hut of the magi to reveal your enemy and artifacts in the underground.
2. Autosave to generate 500 gold.
3. Visit witch hut, check your spells and artifacts including Academy and Dungeon merchants - plan your build.
4. Pick up 9000 gold and start leveling your hero:
- visit mentor to clear unwanted starting skills/abilities - only 500  gold on 1st lvl
- buy Shatter Dark ( only Barbarian can posses it in battle ) to exchange it in mentor for one more skill/ability or wait until sphinx leveling for safety - you can still do it after if you have a free slot and your build doesn't need any changes
- visit sphinx to gain 16th level - Dark Revelation can give you 17th  but do not take it with Barbarian Hero ( when taking Stamina he is forced to pick a level from shrines ) - be careful though because on 17th level one exchange in mentor costs 2500 rather than 2000 on 16th so you will probably make one exchange less
- visit mentor to rebuild your hero - depending on previous actions you will be able to do from 3 to 5 exchanges ( wizard award generates 1000 gold so it can help you gain needed gold )
5. One way teleporter leads you near your castle. Pick up gold and your army from the garrison. Upgrade and buy units in town - one population is available to buy so do not forget about it
( Academy, Dungeon and Haven may take less army to buy artifacts or for training purposes )

6. If you play Necropolis or Sylvan use the two way monolith to choose your favourite enemy or gain creatures from dark energy ( dungeon and dwarf stacks give you 16 vampires, haven stack about 140 skeletons   )
7. Enter the underground to pick your artifacts, stats bonus ( might or magic ) and final bonus:
- artifact - after visiting the tomb attack Aquamancer to regain positive morale
- random 1-3 level spells

- one more level only available for Barbarian Hero - take this route  if you have Stamina, otherwise you will loose your hp bonus on Aquamancer
8. Enter the battle grounds always by letting Kirin flee. Visit the well ( put all knowledge artifacts to gain maximum mana ) and observatory to trace your enemy or simply pick a terrain and wait


Tweaks

I. Heroes (new, alternates and specials after 16th level)

- Wyngaal - 8% bonus to starting ATB (8% out of [0-0.25]
- Anwen - 16% bonus dmg on favourite units
- Alaron - replaces Talanar ( clone )
- Ossir - army changed, sprites and dancers instead of archers
- Dirael - more powerful special
- Vinrael -  Helmar's special

- Helmar - 25% chance for righteous might
- Hangvul - Erlings brother with different starting skills
- Brand - 25% chance for fine rune ( together 75% )
- Inga - 15% chance for new rune on each level up

- Haggash - no ATB bonus for centaurs
- Gotai - special weakened
- Quroq - Garuna's brother with different starting skills
- Kragh - 50% more dmg when hitting
- Garuna - 3 instead of 4 attack bonus for every stack killed

- Meave - 8% init bonus when casting haste
- Andreas - replaces Vittorio ( clone )
- Bertrand - replaces Laszlo ( clone )
- Lorenzo - replaces Dougal ( clone )
- Valeria - replaces Klaus ( clone )
- Alaric - Meave's brother with different starting skills
- Gabrielle - Irina's sister with different starting skills
- Godric - Benediction factor 1.5 instead of 2 ( benediction bonus 3 att/def/morale and 15% init )

- Maahir - replaces  Nur ( clone )
- Cyrus - replaces  Galib ( clone )
- Zehir - special weakened
- Faiz - increased dmg from vulnerability to 140
- Havez - +1 starting skill

- Raelag - 5% init penalty for all enemy units for the whole battle
- Shadya - 16% dmg reduction from shooters
- Lethos - +1 starting skill
- Yrbeth - Alastor's special and confusion as starting spell
- Sorgal - Meave and Alaric's special

- Biara - replaces Nymus ( clone )
- Agrael - 5% init bonus for all firendly units for the whole battle
- Deleb - increased dmg from balista's fireball to 140
- Grok - Raven's special, scouting instead of pathfinding, weakness instead of teleport as starting spell

- Nicolai - replaces Vladimir ( clone )
- Giovanni - Naadir's brother with different starting skills
- Ornella - Lucretia's sister with different starting skills  
- Arantir - avatar balanced
- Deirdre - Banshee Howl factor 1.5 instead of 2 ( banshee howl penalty -3 morale/lick and 15% init reduction )


II. Abilities (after 16th level)

- stormwind penalty -1 speed and 20% init
- corrupted soil does 96 dmg
- distract gives 30% init reduction after casting
- stunning blow reduces ATB by 0.2 instead of 0.1
- mana burst does 400 dmg
- banish does 350 dmg
- swarming gate basic chance increased from 10 to 20% (together chance for double gated stack between 20-45% with 5 luck factor)
- banshee howl penalty -2 morale/luck and 10% init
- benediction bonus +2 att/def/morale and 10% init
- fog veil penalty 20% dmg and init
- master of storms reduces ATB by 0.5 instead of 0.3


III. Spells

- rune of resurrection brings back 30% instead of 40


IV. Units ( (E) means the value is equal to the alternative upgrade; [...] gives the value including bonus )

1. Necro

- Skeleton Archer: +1 att (E), +4 def (E), +1 min dmg [2-2]
- Vampire Lord: +1 min/max dmg [8-12], +1 speed (E)
- Vampire Prince: torpor factor 2 instead of 3
- Banshee: 15 dmg instead of 10 dmg from wail for each unit

2. Dungeon

- Assasin/Stalker: poison does 2 dmg instead of 1 for each unit
- Minotaur Guard: +3 def (E)
- Brisk Raider: +2 max dmg (E), Ride by Attack 100% instead of 25
- Deep Hydra: Regeneration heals 60-100 hp instead of 30-50
- Matriarchs and Mistresses: Whip Strike factor 3 instead of 1.5

3. Haven

- Brute: Assault factor 1.2 instead of 1
- Marksman: +1 min dmg [3-8]
- Crossbowman: -2 max dmg [2-6]
- Zealot: Righteous Might on advanced instead of expert
- Seraph: Righteous Might on expert instead of advanced, Divine Vengeance on advanced instead of basic

4. Fortress

- Mountain Guard: +1 ini (E)
- Berserk: +10 hp [35]
- Lava Dragon: Liquid Flame Breath deals 20 dmg instead of 10 for each unit

5. Sylvan

- War Dancer: +1 att (E), +3 def (E), +1 speed (E), +3 hp [15]
- Master Hunter: +1 att/def (E), +1 ini (E), +1 min dmg [6-8], Warding Arrows factor 2 instead of 1
- Druid Elder: +1 min dmg (E), +2 hp [35], +5 mana [20], Stone Spikes on expert instead of none mastery, Lightning Bolt on expert instead of advanced
- Pristine Unicorn: Child of the Light gives all light magic spells on advanced instead of expert

6. Stronghold

- Goblin Witch-Doctor: +1 hp [6], +1 ini (E)
- Centaur Nomad: +2 def (E), +1 hp (E), +1 min dmg [4-6]
- Mauler: +6 hp [18], Assault factor 1.2 (E) instead of 1
- Sky Daughter: +1 def [10], +4 mana [16], Chain Lightning on advanced instead of basic
- Foul Wyvern: +5 hp [110], Venom  10 dmg instead of 5 for each unit , Regeneration heals 60-100 hp

7. Inferno

- Horned Overseer: +1 min dmg [2-4], +2 speed, +1 ini [9]
- Cerberus: +1 min dmg [5-6]
- Pit Lord: +2 def (R), +2 speed (E), +1 ini (E)
- Arch Demon: +1 speed (R)

8. Academy

- Elemental Gargoyle: Aura of Vulnerability gives 25% bonus instead of 50
- Obsidian Gargoyle: +1 ini (E)
- Djinn Sultan: +5 hp (E)
- Rakshasa Raja: +2 def [22], +2 min dmg [25-30], +1 speed (E)
- Rakshasa Kshatra: -5 max dmg [25-30]
- Storm Titan: Call Storm does 20 dmg instead of 10 and 2% dmg penalty instead of 1 for shooters for each unit

9. Neutrals

- Fire Elemental: +2 ini [10]
- Earth Elemental: +5 ini [10]
- Water Elemental: Ice Bolt on expert instead of advanced, Circle of Winter on advanced instead of basic; 70% power penalty has been removed, elementals will be useful as it was before 3.1

some of the changes are different than on Elvin's map. most of them look good.
aren't those a bit extreme?

- Brisk Raider: +2 max dmg (E), Ride by Attack 100% instead of 25
- Berserk: +10 hp [35] (Elvin only gave them +5 I think)
- Master Hunter: +1 att/def (E), +1 ini (E), +1 min dmg [6-8], Warding Arrows factor 2 instead of 1 (you might increase defense instead of attack)
- Mauler: +6 hp [18], Assault factor 1.2 (E) instead of 1

1. Brisk Raiders

How often do you wait with your raiders in their first turn?
Usually you charge to deal maximum dmg. Problem is that you charge having grim raider. Same amount of brisks will deal maybe 30 or 40% from what the grims will do. They move quite fast so in the first turn there's almost no chance to do Ride by Attack damage. Second thing is that if you want to use that ability you need to have space and couple of enemy units. Big units aren't really difficult to block. Dungeon riders are usually the first stack that dies since after the charge they are slaughtered. So if you pick them and you want to use their ability you will probably have to wait in their first action. A lot can happen until their next turn. And wouldn't it be nice to see a battle in which the raiders don't charge as soon as possible?

Last but not least. People still pick Grim Raiders in 90% cases though the map is available since September
I tried 0.5 than 0.75 and it was still not enough...

2. Berserk

Yes i also had +5 but it wasn't enough. After using the rage they are still very vulnerable but at least they don't die after 2 hits.
And the same story as with the raiders. People still pick Battleragers in 90% cases because their bash is still superior but i've seen battles where berserks where doing their job good.


3. Hunters

Still arcanes are picked most of the times. From long distance you deal not very much but you may make a nice usage of those warding arrows especially with soldier's luck. From close range they are obviously better than arcanes.

4. Maulers

Still they die like flies if you won't let them gain rage points. Remember that this map has no pile of skulls so memory of our blood is the only source of starting rage points. If you hit them their numbers decrease rapidly.

unfortunately, it's been a very long time since I've played against another player, but I remember orcs being indeed crushed by a fast and furious initial charge if they have no rage points.

it seemed that maulers were a bit weak, but now, they almost have the defense of bellicists and far better offence. you are also making chances for assault much higher.


I know that you could use brisk raiders to turn around a single opponent too, which meant 125% damage.

my point about hunters is that defense could be raised instead of attack, it's not like they are lacking in the damage department.

This look impressive albolabris.

I'm curious; why is Rutger banned?

I'm a map-maker and have not done arena-battles but I am interested to know if this can be played in "Hotseat"? (my favorite mode after lan)

Also, will all of these stat-changes affect the generic game too? As I said, I'm new to this stuff and I have had maps with changes that  affect "every" map thereafter with i.e. altered artifact stats.

Well, because I was lazy I think

This map begun it's live over two years ago. It was very different those days and evolved. Before i met Elvin my skill in editor was almost none. Having no knowledge how to mod and change some things we simply banned them. Rutger's special and starting skills are useless for that type of map. Same thing with other listed heroes. Later on we simply forgot about them I think but in the next update which will be soon it's going to be fixed like we did with other heroes ( Yrbeth or Grok ). In the end all known heroes will be available to play


Of course you can play it in Hot Seat, no problem like any other map.

And yes, if you keep the map inside the Maps folder and start playing some different scenario the changes in unit stats will be present.

Aren't  you perhaps a scripter or do you know some good scripter maybe?
I have two great ideas to finish this map as i dreamed but i'm a noob in lua files unfortunately and since half a year search for somebody that is skilled in this. Asheera is gone unfortunately...

I asked about Rutger because he's a Pathfinder with "luck" also I think. I just wondered why he was banned. He's such as nice Knight and all.

hI Albolabris,
I've been trying to find a way for haven to defeat inferno on your map & haven't found a way yet...it seems really difficult with only 20 skill/perk points, some good inferno hero specialties vs some weak haven hero specialties, only 20 pallys & even marksmen dmg reduced.

unfortunately not much time for duels right now or I'd get you to show me

Yeap, the following matchups:

Haven vs Inferno
Stronghold vs Inferno
Stronghold vs Necropolis

are the most difficult ones to win ( for those on the right side of course). Thinking what to do about it Stronghold vs Inferno is almost hopeless... But as you say i can put a rule that Haven can have more palies when fighting against inferno, maybe that would help.

Also i think you are playing on the old version without some important changes but i might be wrong since you searched for the map by yourself. The graphical design is completely new to the one we played couple months ago.

Is there any way to get some replays from matchup from that map? I'm pretty interested in Stronghold vs. Academy, Sylvan and Dungen because those are preeetty onesided for Stronghold too. I'd like to see how the map apparently changed that.

Since we have the replay department spread to 28 possible matchups no problem at all. Picked some random games for each pair.

Stronghold vs Academy
Stronghold vs Sylvan
Stronghold vs Dungeon

Remember to put the map inside the folder as it uses bonus arenas...

About Haven vs Inferno. Try  retribution + enlightenment and benediction. It worked just beautifully in this battle for example where haven hero doesn't even cast a single spell

On the replay, I don't wanna criticse better players than me who play more frequently but...altho using bene from knight hero & haste from inquisitors was a good idea to bring the xbows before succubi, didn't it leave the haven army exposed to a potentially devastating one-two punch from inferno hero & then succubi?

Maybe I also don't build demonlord hero or play inferno that way vs haven.

Yes, the inferno player went to schematically with mass spells rather than single high level spells. He had tome of dark. It should be frenzy on crossbows and then seduce on pallies even if it's just for one action because the griffin would annihilate succubi soon after. Still it would be better than receiving all those hits on mass endurance. Even mass suffering would be more adequate. Knight was very strong - I rarely see such powerful haven hero on this map.
All in all the morale did the job here. It worked just perfectly in amount and timing as well.  

Benediction gives nice bonus now ( before the changes nobody used it since it takes the whole turn so even if used it was after all mass spells where it was just not important, now it's a bit different, same story with banshee howl) but Meave had a +2 morale from artifacts at start and that was crucial. Leadership wasn't necessary so he could spare those levels on other things and as you know there are no easy picks on this map, builds have to be made very carefully or you end with a messy hero.
