A Confession

OK. While waiting like a maniac for Heroes 6, time for a confession from me, for which, I'm sure, most of you will condemn me. When Heroes 3 was released I was 13 and I had no computer and I was totally unaware of PC games. I had my first computer 3 years ago and Heroes 5 is the first and only Heroes game I have played. Yes I haven't played Heroes 3! Please crucify me right now!

I was completely in love with Heroes 5 when I started playing it. I have bought the collector's edition, gold edition, all the expansions seperately and everything, played all the campaigns and stuff. For 2 years I was playing the game day and night, sometimes avoiding my sleep.

It is only a year now that I've introduced myself to other PC games and now I'm addicted. Finished Dragon Age 2, two days ago and I'm out of games for two days so, and I'm suffering really like some smoker out of his cigarettes.

At the first moment I have seen someone say "Heroes 5 sucks", I thought it was a joke. When I realised it was for real, I was shocked. After all it was my lover Then started my "endless" encounters with the "Heroes 3 is best", "nothing will be like Heroes 3" posts from everyone and everywhere, which made me hate the game's guts before even I played it.

But today, enough is enough. Since the day I started playing Heroes 5, I started waiting for and dreaming about Heroes 6. Yesteryear I saw it on Wikipedia and amazed and subscribed to this forum. Heroes 6 seems to be a wonderful game but still everywhere I still see "nothing like Heroes 3". So now, I want to see what all this chaos is about. Don't anyone say "it was good for its time" as I now if the game is that brilliant it will always be, regardless of at what year you play it.

So now, I'm going out to buy the game.

I just wanted to shout this out. Don't know if this was a good idea.

We should probably supply you with a list of must-play pc games but that would be condemning you to play for the next couple of decades or so Anyways H3 is kind of a classic, where most people's addiction begun - those that did not start with H2. It set the foundations for the future heroes games and you could say that H5 was actually close to it as far as game features go. For a game of its age it holds up pretty well even if it lacks some of the complexity H5 had. Skill system for instance and combat, as units lacked the amount of abilities they do nowadays.

You should like it, hope you have fun

I started with H2. I find H2-4 great for each their thing.

I don't know if H3 is any better than H5 or what H6 will be. I haven't played either game.

In any case, it will depend on what you prefer. I personally prefer big big closed adventureing maps. Each map being like its own unique computer game. There the limits of 144x144 and structure limits means I dislike H3 for its limitations.

I like playing H3 with friends though. When you're the best at something, it can feel relaxed and controlled, while your friends know from experience that it's gonna be a good experience.

All in all, I think many people find different charms in the games. Those used to H3 and maybe dissapointed in H4, will probably look for the charm of H3 in H5. I don't know how many finds it, but my guess is that those who won't find it, just won't like H5.

Soo, in short. What makes people like H3 and dislike H5, the same mechanics most likely will happen for those who've only played H5 and not H3. Some will find the same charm. Some won't.

H5 lacked much of the aesthetics and elegant design of H3 though it was shinier. That's pretty much a fact.

Of course I consider every single game of the series as an experience worth acquiring, save maybe H1 that was kinda made obsolete by H2. I consider H2 and H3 and the best games if you want to introduce yourself to the series and H5 coming soon after. H4 was not bad(some may say horrible, others loved the innovation) but it was radically different from what people were used to.

That's most likely the case.
I started with H2 and I don't like H3. At all.

But I didn't understand one thing - you're going to buy H6 or H3?
In either case - gogo or you'll never understand what all the fuzz is about.

Please do that The only exceptions are Mortal Kombat series which I knew because of Arcade Saloons around and my parents gave me Mortal Kombat 4 as a present and I was stuck with it. Also they gave me "Time Commando" as a present when I was a child (I don't remember the year) and I was playing on my father's computer when he was away all the time. "Time Commando" by the way, if anyone remembers it, is still one of the best games I've played. Pity the company was closed and the game is nowhere to be found anymore.

Btw, I was out and found out Heroes 3 is no longer being produced in Turkey since last year. Damn, I was seing the game everywhere last year. Now I will have to download it somewhere unfortunately...

Age of Empires, Diablo II, Warcraft III

And since this is a confession thread I might as well confess that i have only played H1 and H2 for an hour top total.
And I have never played heroes 4.

To be honest I started playing Heroes 3 pretty late, like 2003 or 2004...

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind?

In my opinion, H2 was the most charming, H4 had the best written campaigns,
and H5 had some neat ideas for the battlefield which were further explored in King's Bounty.
H3 is the best game, overall.

I can't say much about H1 because I've never played it, but I guess I can give it props for being the first HoMM game and for having charming graphics as well.

H3 feels hellish dated these days (especially the skills), and the graphics are nothing to write home about, but it doesn't require a huge lump of memory to run, and it doesn't take forever for the computer to make its move.

Apart from the above:

Fallout 1 & 2 - unique RPGs with excellent story and gameplay. And Ron Perlman.
Arcanum - another unique RPG. Huge and unorthodox world, very nice story, literally hundreds of ways to develop your character.
All games from the Total War series.
And of course the Might & Magic games, save maybe M&M IX.
And by the way, my longest gaming session ever is on Caesar III, but usually it is too exotic for the casual player.

I personally got all of them from 1 to 4 in a single compilation or something. And... I do like H4 for its innovation, while the three previous ones seem all the same.

I understand your pain - those people that keep being stuck in the past, going on about H3, really are annoying.

I, too, have a funny confession to make.

I did play a whole game of H1 and, liked it right off the bat.

Did play H2 a lot and, dominated the main large map of the entire world of Enroth. Never built a large army ever again on H3-H4-H5, ever. Managed to gather over 60 level 7 soldiers. Now, that was totally epic.

Played H3 like there was no tomorrow. But, I must admit, without the mod. of W.o.G. vs:3.5.7f, the original version of 3.0 of S.o.D. was getting lull and boring. I totally loved the option of a feature called: Passable terrain and the high leveled spell of fly over terrain obstacles.

Played H4 and, loved the newest graphics interface. Hated the production and hiring of troops and, very bad revenue interface. The siege of a Castle was horrendous as for the battlefields. Was way too R.P.G. for my liking.

Played H5 since the closed beta in Fall of 2005. Now, I do wish there would a fabulous Mod. like W.o.G. for H5:Tribes of the East. Hope that such awesome features can be introduced in H6:Vanilla that brings memories of H3's W.o.G..

I discovered H1 like 2 monthes before H2 was released in France and spent countless sleepless nights on both. I've spent hundreds of hours playing H2 in hotseat

I liked H3 but not as much as H2. Played it a lot in hot seat and/or in LAN with 2 college friends.

I loved H4 but the long and useless AI turns (useless because the AI was dumb anyways) and loading times in MP killed my fun. H4 could have been the best game in the serie if it hadn't been rushed out.

H5 is the one I disliked the most. I was the least appealling graphically (adventure map was dull and empty), it had the worst storyline with characters that I wanted to kill whenever they spoke (Isabel, Godric, Findan, Duncan). I also disliked the race-based factions (and still do in H6).

Yeah, finished Dragon age origins, awakening and 2. But it is the only one i have played among these games. I have bought The Witcher last Christmas from Steam's christmas madness, like nearly for free

I have downloaded it and started, but it seemed dull to me, especially the combat. But maybe I have judged too quickly. But I had enough RPG for the time as these last months I have only played RPG. Maybe will try Witcher after some time.

To avoid to be seen like a complete PC-game noob, I should say, yes it has been 3 years since I have discovered this heaven; but these last years I really played many games. It would be nice for me to say what games I have played chronologically:

-I don't count the Atari games (Mario Bros. and such)
-Wolfenstein 3D (who didn't play it )
-Volf (a game where you are a very small space ship and the screen is full of some creatures one big and 4-5 small. You eat away the screen bit by bit to win.
-The Golden Axe (that was the name, right?)
-Some Sonic games.
-Time Commando
-Mortal Kombat 3 and 4
-Worms: World Party
-Earth Worm Jim 3D (broke the Cd out of anger near the end of the game as there was no "save" option and after you die, you had to return to the beginning of the chapter you were playing)
-Street Fighter Zero 2
-All Bugs Bunny games back then

Then starts the real game experience for me:
-Heroes 5 and all expansions
-Diablo 2
-Half Life2 and both episodes
-Portal
-Dawn Of War and all expansions
-Prince Of Persia: The Two Thrones
-Assasin's Creed (didn't finish, didn't like)
-Peggle series
-Fear (didn't finish, cause didn't like)
-Stalker (didn't like and erased after one hour or so, twice)
-Street Fighter 4
-Dawn Of War 2 (only the campaign, which is like a RPG really)
-Machinarium
-Samorost 2
-Penumbraverture (didn't finish, didn't like)
-Disciples 3
-Darksiders (didn't finish, didn't like)
-The Ball (didn't finish, HATED)
-Worms Reloaded
-Civilization 5
-Crysis
-Mass Effect 1 & 2
-Dragon Age Origins & Awakening & 2

And now, waiting for Heroes 6, Diablo 3 and Portal 2.

Btw, downloaded Heroes 3 and now playing it. No problems with Windows 7 64-bit so far, except for some glitches following after the cursor like very little cuts in the screen.

I'm just 21, but I got started with PC gaming when I was about five, so I started with the first Heroes of Might and Magic--in fact, that was the first PC game (or any video game, for that matter) I ever played.

My decades-long Heroes dedication began with Heroes II--I know many people prefer Heroes III, but Heroes II, to me, is by far the best in the series. But that's just my opinion. The graphics, the music, the perfect balance between simplicity and complexity... it is the best video game in the world to me, and I don't see that changing.

I don't see any reason to give you a hard time about not playing Heroes III at all. The game is 12-years-old by now (still amazing, though)! All are welcome here, even if you've only played V. You still have experience with the Heroes universe... we're all here to discuss and look forward to Heroes VI, and it just doesn't matter what you've played before. It's that comradery, y'know?

Try King's Bounty Legend and expansions, definitely better than the buggy half baked Disciples 3. And Witcher 2 is coming May 17 which is more action-orientated than the first one so chance are you won't find it dull like the first one.
